This post: LINKY is a copy-paste of Obsidian's press release that they will be making a tablet version of the PACG. AWESOME!

Here's my first question for Vic or Mike (whoever is in charge of this port): Will those of us who have subscribed since forever ago get access to the card sets we already own in the tablet version? I don't mind paying to get the app, but if there are charges for different decks I would hope that we will not have to pay AGAIN for those...

Before I start jumping for joy... "Obsidian's first licensed product will be a tablet game based on the highly successful Pathfinder Adventure Card game". This may mean that it's a faithful representation of the existing card game (though, capped at 4 players?) or it may mean that it's a very loose interpretation of the game in a new format (see, Magic: the Gathering Tactics).

While I have a tablet, I also really strongly hope that a PC version comes from this as well. I understand the need for mobile, but I still prefer my gaming on PC.

In case you weren't aware, you can actually play the PACG right now on a program called OCTGN, though you need to scan your cards in to replace the proxy cards generated by the game, which don't show the card text (purposefully, to keep people from stealing). If you're interested in more details about that, PM me.

I'm actually playing on Cardwarden, but yes, I was aware of OCTGN. My comments are in reference to a fully published electronic version of PACG, such as what the topic of this thread was in reference to ;)

The announcement is on Paizo's site now.

Ah I note now (though, it was on the thread linked before, too, I just missed it) that there will be a prototype at GenCon. That should shed some light on the questions I have, at least.

I will try it out if it's Android friendly. And I really hope this wont work on my phone. I fear for my work efficiency. ;)

Silver Crusade RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16

Anyone who is going to Gencon, PLEASE give us a post about how the prototype looks and plays! And whether it is the Rise of the Runelords or the Skull & Shackles adventure path! I really can't wait to get more info on this!

This is oddly relevant, since I may get a tablet by the time it is ready for official launch.

Any word on whether this will play asynchronously? I would have a much higher chance of playing with my friends if that was the case.

Grand Lodge

No details yet. I'm sure we'll hear more about it soon, though.

I hope by android tablets they also release on Kindle. I hate that Amazon and Google don't play nice when it comes to paid apps. :/

Call me f it's also available on a PC. :)

Great news. Love the card game and am always looking for good apps. I think this is a smart move for PF.

Ok, I squeed myself.

Looks gorgeous. I like that they have a map of Sandpoint as the background in at least one image. SO FREAKING EXCITED!!

This sounds awesome. I am eagerly looking forward to more details of this dropping. Though it will never replace the real game for me, as my group knows, I LOVE rolling dice :)

OH. MY. GOD.

This, Skull & Shackles, Class Decks, Miniatures.

My tiny mind has been blown skywards.

Was reading the forum over on Obsidian and come to the conclusion that they don't have a clue about the game. They think it is the RPG, not the PACG.

The Exchange

Well I am excited I hope to see the game released on all tablets as well as a windows and mac version. If anything at least a PC version and not just make it a ipad only game.

Pathfinder Card Game Subscriber

I wonder if we'll be able to play PFSACG scenarios on it. I'd be glad to get packs of DLC!

Just stumbled on this - Drive Thru interviews one of the developers of the Pathfinder app at GenCon:

Sounds like it will be available for other platforms thankfully!

The licenses we have signed will allow Obsidian to do several products. The tablet version of the PACG is first, but a computer roleplaying game will eventually follow.

I can't help but wonder the effect of this on organized play.

Are you worried it will negatively impact OP? If so, I would suspect they won't put the OP scenarios into the "virtual card game" and maybe not even the class deck characters. Those two things should keep OP quite popular.

I kinda went farther than that.

My first thought when I saw this was that I just wasted my money on the physical game (yeah, the usual knee-jerk when Apps/new versions are announced). I quickly beat that thought down, but it is still in there since the main reason I don't play this game as much as I'd like is due to setup/cleanup/transport.

PACG isn't like other card games with online versions. Almost all of those are PvP and the only setup is shuffling. I'd kinda prefer a tablet version despite my preference for in-person, physical gaming and love of cards.

So assuming Guild play isn't in the App, I'm not sure the effect on the player pool for the physical game.

Another variable is cooperative play. Making it online or LAN would create another reason to skip the physical version.

Add to that the aggressive release schedule for the physical sets. Is there really that many people actually playing this game to support two base sets a year? I know a lot of folks my age are, sadly, collecting games, rather than playing them. I took an informal poll of people in the Paizo checkout line at GenCon and most of us who were buying the new base set never completed the RotRL AP.

Sorry, I'm meandering and these thoughts could be several threads when broken up.

I want to be clear I'm not making ANY statements about how I think it will turn out, just identifying risks/challenges/opportunities. I'm a PM by trade and it has became a habit.

@Oath
I Know where you're coming from and in this case I can only speak for myself. PACG is not the only cardgame I'm playing. I also play LOTR LCG from FFG and due to a lack of players where I live I can only play online via OCTGN or other platforms for multiplayer sessions but this didn't stop me from buying every release for LOTR and I don't think it ever will. There is a risk, of course, but I'm sure it is not as bad as you might think.

I saw the demo for this at Gen Con so I can answer some of the questions in this thread.

It looks like it's the Runelords set.

There are some fun graphical things - in the demo they were showing, there was a map of the town of Sandpoint with the scenario locations indicated on their proper spots. Going to a location "zooms in" on it and there are small animations like the wooden bridge swaying and such.

We were told that there are also some story interludes where your characters interact with NPCs, and these interludes vary based on your group composition.

I do not know if you get the entire set or whether you have to in-app purchase later adventures. I would not be surprised if we do, software development takes time and money.

At the PACG seminar it was implied that they will also work on converting Skull&Shackles and even the Guild scenarios, but don't expect the development times to match those of the card game. The electronic version may perpetually lag behind, especially with the guild scenarios which can be more intricate due to having more space for text. Someone mentioned villains in the blessings deck and I'm not sure that he was joking.

Grand Lodge

I also saw the demo and was impressed with what I saw. I spoke with the producer of the project as well as a friend of his from PlayDek (who does the iOS Acsension game which I love).

First, it won't be ready until January 2015 at the earlier. It is only Rise of the Runelords at first. This puts it closer to the end of Skull & Shackles run. They've had enough issues putting RotR into the electronic game that the S&S variations (ships, etc.) are going to take them a while. They don't have all the characters available yet. They are looking at backwards compatibility (since by the time of release, iOS8 will be out ... and iOS8 won't be running on iPad2s like mine :-( ). They have a lot to do to get this out.

So do I think it will impact the card game, I don't see how. They will be fairly far behind with their content releases. Do I see this as a good way to supplement the game interest, yes. I have Ascension as both the card and iOS game. I prefer the iOS game. But I bought both at the same time and had the same content at the same time. As a competitive deck-building game with a bit of setup for the card version, the iOS game is very seductive and easy. Plus they did a great job with all the animation and gameplay on the iOS game.

But PACG is so more than just what Ascension is. There is a role-playing aspect to the game. There's the character upgrades. There is the deck building which is truly deck building. What happens when you realize you've mad a bad choice with that last upgrade and gone back and changed your sheet. Will you have that in the electronic version? Probably not. There is the face to face aspect of the game which is similar to RPGs. (And they better not be integrating an electronic play into PFSACG!)

I look at the electronic game as a way to play the game when no one else is around and you don't want to drag your cards out to run solo. Do I see it as a replacement for my playing at my local gaming store or playing with friends/family or the organized play ... never.

Emphasis mine.

My reaction upon reading this.

That was followed by inward squeeing (I couldn't outwardly squee because someone else was in the next room)

I was not joking. That scenario was actually played at Gen Con...

Yup. It was a cool mechanic.

Without being too spoilery, it meant that you had a definite timeline as to when the villain would first appear, and knew what you had to accomplish before that.

I passed by it at GenCon it was looking good. Was nice to see the cards on a display. :)

I have to throw my hat in the ring hoping the PACG Digital version isn't Tablet only and it'll show up on Steam much like Talisman.

I would love to see this happen soonish. With Sentinels of the Multivers getting it's own Tablet version (and BTW being pretty awesome even if it only has 4 villains and 4 environments ATM), I can see how the PACG card game could easily fly. I am hoping that Obsidian is going to keep an eye on how Sentinels works, and hopefully be able to get into the fray with PACG.

I would hope that the game they work on could be for both the OP and the base sets. Sometimes playing RotRL or S&S would be awesome without having to be part of the OP.

Grand Lodge

From what I saw at GenCon and having purchased SotM for the iPad, they are nothing like each other. And that's a good thing. I enjoy SotM on iOS. I like the feel of the game and the play.

But PACG Digital has elements more in tune with Ascension where there are special effect graphics and the cards have a similar feel. But that's where the similarities end. The backgrounds are great. The location map was great. It felt more immersed into the environment. I really liked what I saw and am anxious to play it.

They've said they want to do more with it but all we saw a few months ago was a piece of RotR and not the entire Adventure or a scenario.

Sovereign Court RPG Superstar 2011 Top 32

Based on what I saw at Gen Con and what was announced at the panel, I'd be surprised to see this out before late spring/early summer.

I think they're only releasing Burnt Offerings and the base scenarios at the start. This limits the number of cards they have to code.

But I'm worried about them getting the rules interactions correctly, especially with the amount of errata that's been out. Obsidian Entertainment seems like a relatively large studio, which worries me more than a small studio when it comes to things like that. Especially when they're really invested in nice graphics.

Grand Lodge

Obsidian is an awesome developer with an unfortunate history of being rushed to release big-budget RPGs to market, resulting in fantastic games that are mired with bugs. Knights of the Old Republic II, Fallout: New Vegas, and Alpha Protocol are all great games that had some crippling bugs that ruined the experience for many people.

As long as they have all the time they need to polish, I'm confident the PACG app will be awesome.

There are a lot of complex interactions, and your concern is certainly valid, but I do have to point out that most of the FAQ entries we've made have been about decreasing the potential for misunderstanding. Very few of the resolutions actually changed the way things work.

This is a huge tease, I would buy this in an instant. I wish we had an idea of the release date.

"2 weeks"

It takes time, and we just saw it for the first time in August. I would stab in the dark much later in 2015.

And you've done a tremendous work doing so.

BTW do I win a spare Holy Candle if I keep repeating how amaze I'm with the work done, our ship is totally wrecked, the villain is closing on us, and we would really need once of those candles right now.

Solo play possible?

Is there also a discount for pacg subscribers planned?

Why you should buy RotR twice - physical and soft media???

Solo play was what we saw at GenCon. Connected play was something I asked about but would come much later. But solo is what you're going to get first.

Don't count on it. iOS apps are not attached to Paizo. It's not like Ultrapro products that can be sold on the website.

Because it's solo play, it's easier to get out your iPad than the cards. And the cleanup is way easier. And if you're traveling, you can play it on your iPad easier than using cards.
