This is a thread to gauge interest in a brutal survival horror campaign with a decidedly supernatural bent. The premise is sort of like Silent Hill, Hellraiser, or, presumably, The Evil Within, with multiple characters drawn into a twisted, hellish reflection of the real world where they must struggle against nearly impossible odds to survive the horrific beings that inhabit the dark dimension. Each enemy could be at least ECL+3 unless there is a horde of weaker enemies, and nearly every encounter would need to be handled intelligently. Available classes will all be modern and will be posted if enough interest is shown.

The campaign will be quite heavy on 'intellectual play'. Which is to say: puzzles, investigations, conserving resources, winning extremely hard fights by exploiting weaknesses and the environment, and knowing when to RUN LIKE HELL!

The PCs were all shunted to the dark dimension somehow and the insidious evil has somehow drawn a few people they know as well. Most of these have met with grim fates, but a few are still 'savable', though in what condition is up for grabs.

Things to expect: lots of body horror, extreme psychological horror, depictions of graphic violence and torture which will have to be spoilered to meet the messageboard standards, a very oppressive atmosphere, a low survival rate, and little in the way of 'true victory' moments. This is not a campaign for heroes... it is a campaign for survivors.

The classes would be the six anachronistic adventurer classes by Rogue Genius Games which, if enough interest is shown, I will put up in Google Docs as a read-only file. The point buy will be focus and foible.

I'm thinking 3-4 players, to keep the numbers very light.

I'm also thinking of making this E5 instead of E4, to show that even hardcore characters are still VERY killable! I may not choose this, but I'm strongly leaning towards it.

I'm thinking of something interesting with firearms, since ammo is so rare. I'm thinking of souping up firearm critical hits so that, in addition to multiplying damage, extra weapon damage dice are rolled. If the number is in the top 10% of the die, another die of damage is rolled. Example, you score a critical hit and multiply the damage as normal. Then, you roll say 2d10 (Assume this is the firearms base damage,) and, if you deal at least 18 damage, you roll 2d10 again. This will account for those 'extremely lucky shots'. Given that most bosses have DR and/or fast healing/regeneration or only a unique method of execution, I think this is only really useful against the 'normal' ECL+2 or 3 enemies. The repeating can occur up to 7 times, assuming someone is lucky enough to hit the required number that many times.

So what kind of characters would everyone play? Assume it's the modern world. I also have a book for modern equipment and such for starting gear and everything.

Is it modern modern or like, 1920's modern? Because the book premises make it sound more like the latter. Also, without having looked at the classes in depth, I'm likely for some kind of Luminary (likely based on Ms Mina Harker) or possibly a Sensitive, because I really like the idea of playing a washed-up psychic.

Planning on allowing you all to utilize anything in the game as a weapon. Know that plant is extremely toxic? Good, grind it up and coat a weapon. Enemy underneath a huge chandelier? Shoot it so it falls on them. What about water? Well, apply electricity and you have an enemy cooker! This game is about, as I mentioned, intellectual play. Don't assume I will always hand knowledge out to you though... you have to actively earn it. I won't tell you the flower with the thin purple leaves is belladonna, you'll have to either know it yourself or identify it with a skill (Yes... if you know it, your character likely does too... everyone knows random facts and I don't see why the average person has to have maxed out ranks in Profession: Botanist or something to know even a single flower!).

Seth86, feel free but your character will be in for a rude awakening. They say war is hell... but this place is MUCH closer to it! ;) I presume you will know about how to craft ammo from scrap with Craft: Gunsmithing, yes?


Yup. Reason I say. In most games/movies there is the gun-nut or the military guy. Hes the survivor list. Not just guns. Green beret or south african recce (im a south african) etc.

Cthulhu Apocalypse can be found HERE. It's one of the darkest of Cthulhu campaigns... one where the creatures become ascendant and humanity is in its last dying moments. Forget Fallout for an apocalypse scenario, this one is a million times worse! I have all 3 of the books and had made it into a campaign a few months back. Unfortunately, only 4 people expressed interest. The boards were kind of quiet at that time, which was right before my long absence of around 2 months.


Oh Cthulhu how I love thee. Delta Green was always my favorite for that sort of game.

I am too *shrug* I am never lost for a myriad of character ideas. The one advantage (so to speak) with highly lethal games is you might get to play more than one of them before your time is done. LOL


haha yeah definitely.

I've decided that I'm going with Sensitive, though the exact archetype is dependent on whether we are using Psychic powers? If ESPer is not an option, I think I'll go with the Profiler.

I'm only in for one game - I both don't want to take on too much and don't want to keep someone else from enjoying being killed by Cthulhu.


Like Yorick I need to reign it in a bit. I think I am good with just the one game or if there is a stronger pull to Cthulhu I am game there, but I should only do one.

Lol! This list of new critical hit effects are absolutely brutal. Everyone better hope they don't get critted! Almost finished getting everything ready. The bosses are generally +6 ECL, so for the love of d20, be perceptive and play intelligently!


Wow, ECL +6? I'm not even that brutal... nah, I'm just kidding lol! Sounds fun!

I already discussed the idea with RVT, but am deciding to let everyone else know my basic character idea. My basic concept for creating a character is an Investigator, specifically a Medical Examiner, who is in love with a beautiful actress. She disappears, leaving him to follow clues seemingly meant to lure him somewhere. This leads him to his current predicament. He will be the 'healer' of the group and the general problem solver. He will also very likely be one of the more intense characters, because his desire to find his love is all he cares about at this point. Since RVT told me that the characters will be shifting between realities, I think his forensic ability could come quite in handy as well, if my knowledge of her inspirational material is anything like the campaign will be lol. My character is essentially Sherlock Holmes, House, and several other iconic trope characters rolled into one.
