WANT SO MUCH

Any Half-dragon stuff?

No this is for dragons not half-dragons.

Not quite clear on how this lets you make different kinds of dragons.

One of the class features is called "draconic essence". It lets you pick between a bunch of different options, which affect some of your character's capabilities, including elemental immunities and breath weapons. Each draconic essence corresponds to a particular type of true dragon.

So it can only do colored and metal dragons?

The paragon class can be used to emulate the traditional metallic and chromatic dragons, imperial dragons, primal dragons, faerie dragons, and pretty much anything in-between. It was designed to be a rather modular class.

Okay, thanks.

Linnorms? (I've bought the book but have not yet had a chance to look at it!)

No linnorms. I'm working on some linnorm-centric material that will be a part of a forthcoming sourcebook for the Lost Isles. (At least that's the current plan, it's early in design and doesn't yet have a scheduled release date.)

We don't talk about release dates until the manuscript is done :0

Something nice to look forward to then =)

A quick question if you take the Claws alternate racial trait and the Mighty Claws feat, should your damage be 1d3 and progressing or 1d4?

SACplayin wrote:

1d3 at Small size and progressing. The Mighty Claws feat makes them primary natural attacks instead of secondary, nothing else.

Well, you did it. Took a lot of testing, but mission accomplished!

Quick question though: can dragons alter their size like jotun as they get bigger, or is it fixed like the minotaur?

Fixed, but there are ways for them to operate more effectively in restrictive spaces if they choose.

I really like this, really like playing as dragons. Though any chance it might be ported over to D&D 5E? :)

We have no plans for it at this time. Talk to me again in Jannuary when WotC makes up its mind about licensing.

Anyone with book in hand, or the publisher want to comment on the balance of this content when you have one character using it within a party? Are the races balanced against core, and are they comparable with the Advanced Race Guide's race builder mechanic?

It was designed to be balanced with this being the only tanninan dragon in the party. Were were not trying to have a council of wyrms problem (though a lot of folks want to play that way). They are balanced against core. Comparable yes, but we did not use the race builder mechanic as there are number of balancing factors we included that were custom.

We did this as a free open playtest for 6 months before we made changes and released the final pay for version.

There is only one race in the book, the taninim - a dragon progenitor race. They were balanced against the ARG mechanics when created and considered an advanced race on the lower end of the RP range (12-13 if I recall correctly... those notes were very early in the design process, so just working off my rusty memory).

The paragon class and class archetypes are what a taninim character uses to emulate a particular dragon type. I think they're balanced to fit within a party of non-dragons, on the strong side but without dominating the group and stealing the show from the rest of the players. My opinion may be a bit biased, but we did incorporate lessons learned during a six-month playtest into the final product, including cases where dragons were run alongside more standard characters.

Reviewed first on endzeitgeist.com, then submitted to Nerdtrek and GMS magazine and posted here, on OBS and d20pfsrd.com's shop. Cheers!

Thanks for taking the time to do a comprehensive review, much appreciated!

Thank you for making a review I utterly dreaded a delight in the end - I really did not expect to be able to write such a positive review on the topic of the concept of PLAYING DRAGONS. I especially love how you prevented making dragons meek and feeble while still maintaining a viable PC-option. Respect and reverence, Wendall!

"I am really looking forward to the follow up In The Company of Dragons: The Lost Isles and possibly an adventure."

So are we!! Those would be auto-purchases for my table.

Awesome book. Unfortunately it may not see use in my Way of The Wicked game, but thisIn the Company of Fey and the Company of Dragons are some of my favorite 3rd party material.

don't see why one could not play a evil dragon in way of the wicked or an evil fey either.

Actually we have an evil jotun from in the Company of Giants in our group that took Aspect of the Earth and is a stone giant. It was more about available choices since I use a fair amount of 3rd part material. I really enjoy all of the Rite Publishing products. I do have one question about the shrinking ability for giants, if you will indulge me. Does it only allow the giant to go up or down one size from their current size level, or can they use it to change multiple size categories as consecutive full round actions? IE Huge to Large to Medium and so on. Thanks for your help.

Will one of these books have archetypes for the racial paragon class? Or perhaps more racial archetypes for the taninim?

This book was awesome by the way. I am glad I bought it this morning.

We have never done archetypes for the racial paragaon classes, we are more likely to add additional options. I do know wendall is working on more archetypes for the taninim, but he has been off sick so he can't respond right now.

You can spend one full ground going from Huge to Large and then spend the round after that going from Large to Medium. The Idea was to allow the Giant to still be a Giant and go adventuring through that 5' wide door. Though this really belongs over in the In The Company of Monsters (or giants) product thread :)

Awesome, awesome, awesome. I miss the 2nd Ed Isle of Wyrms setting something fierce, and this would be a cool way to play it again.

I understand. I was just hoping for the option to opt out of flight and become more like a Linorm. I look forward to this adventure though! Thank you for responding.

In the Company of Dragons: Lost Isles will primarily be a campaign setting, but will include expanded character options including archetypes. Some of the archetypes you can look forward to seeing:

  • Draconic Hero - this pan-class archetype from In the Company of Dragons will now also cover the hybrid classes from Paizo's Advanced Class Guide
  • Stormclaw - a magus focusing on the fusion of battle casting with her claws, fangs and breath weapon
  • Wardrake - an archetype for Rogue Genius Games' war master that focuses the class on draconic culture

This has been on the additional options we are working towards.

Gigantic piles of good news here on the dragon front. I know I'll be happy to run a dragon adventure!

And thank you Rite Publishing for the quick response! I look forward to all future Company of Dragons releases.

Also for those folks who don't know about there is 10 Dragon Magic Items which was written to be small supplement to In the Company of Dragons.

Dark Archive

Sweet. Just bought it, thanks for the heads up.

Q1: Is there any ETA on the Lost Isles supplement and intro module?

Q2: Are the supplement and the module in a single release, or are they two separate releases? If the latter, I assume the module will trail behind the supplement release date?

Thanks in advance, and I swear I'll leave you alone and just wait for these products to come out after this. : )

The "problem" I'm having with reading the flavor is this: too many ideas for adventures. I trust this "problem" will only get "worse" when reading In the Company of Dragons: Lost Isles. ;)

I saw on Rite Publishing's web site they are going to Kickstarter this project ! They can count my scaly hide in on that action. Some Lost Isles, maybe an adventure or two, some stretch goals, who knows -- what's not to like about that proposition ?

Wait, really?!? I don't see it. I know they announced a kickstarter for compiling 1001 magic items, but where are you seeing anything about a In the Company of Dragons-related kickstarter?

Dark Archive

ritedesigns.blogspot.com

Second item down is a post by Steve Russell from 4/6/15 (31 things they're working on). If you look under the Pathfinder section it references the Lost Isles Kickstarter. Sorry, I'd link directly but I'm on my Kindle and can't right now.

Could be just a KS to raise art money for Lost Isles of course. An adventure or two and some stretch goals were my hopes and dreams talking. I have no inside knowledge and have only read about it there.

Looks like that's Steve's blog, which is linked through the main RP web site.

Ah, I see! I was just looking at the Rite website, not the Rite blog:P
I'm guessing it will happen after the 1001 magic items kickstarter, since that one is compiling a bunch of products that have been released already.

Dark Archive

According to Rite Publishing's FB page, the In the Company of Dragons Kickstarter is coming May 20th. They can count me in.
