Well, now that I can afford a headband of intellect, I know that it gives me ranks in one skill equal to my character level.

Does this skill have to be an INT based one?

Nope it can be any skill, however any ranks you gain won't stack with any ranks you already have and you don't gain extra ranks per level for having an increased intelligence score.

So for example, if you have 3 ranks in Acrobatics at 5th level, and decide that your headband will have Acrobatics as the skill - your Acrobatics becomes 5 not 8.

So... What if a tengu or gnome with the racial feature that gives two languages per rank in linguistics puts on a headband of intellect that grants linguistics, how do you determine what languages he gets, and at what level do you just say, "He has all of them."

Well he'll have all of them when he actually has all of them, but what happens when his headband is stolen?

Same way you determine what languages would be in the headband as if someone ranked up linguistics. Just pick them. and write them down.
