I saw they released more video of Jason Momoa as Lobo the other day. Happily, he really does look like he'll be perfect in that role. Sadly, he's saddled with an appearance in upcoming travesty Supergirl. Still, if that (probably) craptastic abomination does at least has the potential to give us a solo Lobo movie, it could have at least served a worthy purpose.

Scarab Sages

And, yes. I am judging the Supergirl movie before I even see it. My justifications are numerous: (a) It's was developed by James Gunn as part of his Gunn Cinematic Universe (GCU), (b) It's based off a story by that a-hole of a hack "writer" Tom King, and he's involved in the film itself, (c) from all appearances of the trailer, it's just going to be Gunn attempt at a Guardians of the Galaxy style movie, which seems to be the only type of movie he's actually good at.

Scarab Sages

Tom King is basically proof the powers that be hate true comic book fans.

Scarab Sages

Damnit! Now that we've bought a treadmill, and I've posted about it, I'm getting all kinds of advertisements for fitness gear. Stupid algorithms.

Scarab Sages

I should really try to catch up on some reading this weekend. Or maybe some bagging and boarding. Or both, if the fates allow (i.e. whether I feel like it or not).

Scarab Sages

I still recall probably the worst winter of my life. That was back in 2010/2011. The wife was pregnant with the boy, so we didn't travel for Christmas. Starting early December 2010, it snowed EVERY week, all the way into mid-January. And several of those snows were a foot or more. By the time it was all said and done, I had two massive piles of shoveled snow out front: one burying my front lawn, the other directly in front of the house on the street.

And since the wife was pregnant, she's couldn't help with shoveling. So it was always just me. Very exhausting.

Scarab Sages

The second worst winter was probably my first real experience with snow. It was a President's Day snow storm in maybe 2002? I was living in an apartment at the time, and my then girlfriend stayed over. She was trapped by the snow, which wasn't really too bad....:)

Anyway, when it stopped, I had to walk a mile or so to the grocery store and buy a shovel. Then I spent most of the day digging out first her car, then my own. For good measure, I also helped a few other people shovel. It was an exhausting day.

Scarab Sages

Basically, all my worst weather memories come from winter. Which makes sense, since that season is the work of the devil.

Scarab Sages

The wife reminded me it might be a good idea to have gas for the generator. Thankfully, I already have two 5-gallon containers out in the garage. That stuff can keep up to 6 months, depending on conditions. I checked it and it smells okay, with no visible sediment. Should be good to go.

Scarab Sages

I am reminded of part of an old saying: “Weak men create hard times.”

Scarab Sages

The rain has continued off and on for the day, while the temp has been dropping slowly but steadily. It’s in the mid 40s at present, with the windchill making it feel about 10 degrees cooler.

No snow….yet. If we do get some, I don’t expect it to be much.

Scarab Sages

My mother called earlier to see how we were doing, like were in the middle of some kind of blizzard or something. I had to remind her the wife and I once lived much further north, and there were times we’d have temps below freezing for weeks at a time.

Scarab Sages

Meanwhile, my wife’s aunt is so panicked she’s got a bucket and bag to pee in if she loses access to water. In New Orleans. Did I mention she’s extremely neurotic?

Scarab Sages

Happy Sunday?!?

Scarab Sages

To be honest, I had to double check my phone to make sure it was actually Sunday. Mostly because yesterday felt so much like Sunday, since I didn't go anywhere, did lots of laundry, and had stew for dinner.

Scarab Sages

Because when we have stew, it's typically something we make on a Sunday.

Scarab Sages

Anyway...it's cold. Real cold (for this area). And cloudy. It rained most of the night. At some point the rain turned to sleet, but never to snow. For now the rain has stopped, and according to the current information from weather app, it'll stay stopped until Friday.

We're still due for really cold temperatures though. It'll warm up in the middle of the week, but only during the day. Between now and next Tuesday, it's looking like we'll have low temps below freezing every day but one.

Scarab Sages

Of course, it was still raining when I took the dog out this morning at 5 am. And of course she wouldn't go potty. Just rain outside in the rain and sniffed things for a minute or two. Just long enough to get wet and make me cold. Stupid dog.

Scarab Sages

Speaking of annoying...

I hopped on the treadmill last night, and went to turn the TV on to maybe stream a short show while I was walking. Turns out, the children broke the TV remote at some point, and never bothered to tell me. Needless to say, I was angry.

So now I've got to buy a new remote. We could probably order one off Amazon. It'd save me having to go to a Best Buy or something.

Scarab Sages

Another cool archaeologist story...

Danish archaeologists found a 600 year old sunken cog ship. Neat.

Scarab Sages

I saw that a Bel Air mega-mansion is back on the market for a mere $99.9 million. That's apparently down from the original asking price of $139 million.

Must be nice to have that kind of FU money. You can afford all kinds of things the "little people" can't. Probably why so many wealthy people don't mind government regulations that drive up prices for the rest of us.

Scarab Sages

There was an editorial I saw about young men being isolated, having no close friends, with marked increases in low self-esteem and suicide rates. Being the father of a teenage boy, and someone who himself has no close friends, that kind of thing worries me and makes me a bit sad.

Personally, I believe there are two big contributors to this situation: (1) The preponderance of social media and online gaming reducing face-to-face interactions, and (b) the concerted effort by certain elements in our society to vilify men and label even the most positive aspects of traditional masculinity as "toxic" (a word that, depending on the context, makes me more likely to discount anything else the person using it has to say).

Scarab Sages

And, in "forgotten Hollywood"...

I saw an article calling out something about Jeremy Pivens. I had forgotten all about that dude. Haven't seen him in anything in ages. Still love his roles in PCU and Grosse Pointe Blank.

Scarab Sages

And...

Shirley MacLaine made a rare public appearance the other day. At the ripe old age of 91. To be honest, I had forgotten she was still alive.

Scarab Sages

Grosse Pointe Blank - Now that was a funny movie. Probably the last good movie John Cusack made, before he went all bat-s#@t crazy political extremist. Then again, that can probably be said of many entertainers.

Scarab Sages

PCU was pretty good as well, and probably still relevant to today's college campus. Maybe even more so. And it had a much younger John Favreau. Not to mention George Clinton (who is still alive) and the Parliament-Funkadelic.

Scarab Sages

Anyway, not much planned for today beyond hanging around the house and keeping my brain occupied. That's really my usual goal for any given day, so I should just say that. Then I can leave it up to The Fates how it's accomplished: reading, bagging and boarding, video games, etc.

Scarab Sages

Not sure what we're going to do for dinner tonight. We've got some options. I bought chicken tenders at the store on Thursday, and the wife bought chicken breasts yesterday. So...something chicken related.

Scarab Sages

Aw, cute. George R. R. Martin telling someone a few days ago that the Song of Ice and Fire books will end differently from the TV series like he actually intends to finish the books one day.

What a lying sack of crap.

Scarab Sages

Huzzah! I applied to some jobs this morning!

I had been perusing LinkedIn yesterday evening, and found two jobs that looked interesting. To apply to each one required access to the computer so I could upload my resume. At the time, I didn't want to kick the boy off the computer, so I saved them and made a mental note to apply later.

Today was later enough, and thankfully I remembered I had saved them. Good old man brain.

Scarab Sages

I've been somewhat good about cutting back on my coffee intake lately, going from three to two cups in the morning. However, this morning I think I'll indulge myself a bit.

Scarab Sages

Well, it’s been a boring, but somewhat relaxing day. I only had two loads of laundry to do, so I took my time with that. Otherwise, I did some mapping and played a bit of Diablo 4. Finished the Vessel of Hatred expansion with my original character, the Barbarian Buliwyf.

Scarab Sages

At dinner we watched an episode from The New Batman Adventures, which was pretty much a new title and animation style slapped on Batman the Animated Series. The episode in question is one of my favorites - Legends of the Dark Knight.

The episode emulates a story by Dennis O’Neil and Neal Adams, where kids tell stories of Batman from their perspective. The first story is emulates Dick Sprang’s art style and the story style from the 50s and 60s. The second story combines two scenes from Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, and has Michael Ironside voice Batman.

Great episode.

Scarab Sages

Later tonight I’ve got a new episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. And I’ll probably watch a few episodes of Stargate SG-1.

Scarab Sages

I think I’ll skip the treadmill tonight, though. I’m not in the mood for it.

Scarab Sages

Happy Monday?!?

Scarab Sages

Meh. Not really. Mostly because it's really cold, and I despise really cold. As any normal person should.

Scarab Sages

I'm also unhappy because the school district once again jumped at an opportunity to take a day off. They made the call on Friday to be closed Monday, because the weather was going to be icy.

It was, in fact, decidedly NOT icy.

"But Zombie", you being your excuse, "they didn't know it would be NOT icy, they had to make the call when they could." And I would more sensibly reply, "Then why are they waiting until today, Monday, to make a call about classes on Tuesday?"

It's because they new they could get away with a free day off today, but that it would be harder to excuse when they had lots of other, actually hard-working people going to work on Monday.

Scarab Sages

Anyway....

Like I said, it's cold today, but the sun is going to come out later this afternoon. For the rest of the week, the app is saying we'll have a mix of sun and clouds, with temps warming up through Friday. The another cold weekend, before temps warm up again next week.

Scarab Sages

At least summer has the common courtesy to pretty much always be miserably hot. You don't get that with winter, because winter is the a-hole of the seasons.

Scarab Sages

And I'm not sure if the garbage men are coming today. The HOA sent out a notice a few days ago saying it was dependent on the weather, and that further announcements would be forthcoming. Being an HOA, they of course did not send out further announcements.

Because HOA should really stand for Home Owners A-holes.

Scarab Sages

Decided to step outside (damn it's cold!) and see if neighbors had put their garbage cans out. Some of them had, so I figured I'd join the better safe than sorry group.

Scarab Sages

Oh no! I see that James Cameron and Kristen Stewart are....gasp...leaving the USA!!! However will we survive without them?!? Calamity!!

I guess James can afford to move somewhere else quite easily, considering all the money he's made from destroying the environment with his movie making.

Scarab Sages

In other movie news...I see Nintendo dropped another Super Mario Galaxy trailer. Looks good. Maybe I'll see if my kids want to see it, although they might be a bit old for that kind of movie now.

Scarab Sages

And in further movie news....I see that Kenan & Kel (Yes, I know who they are. Albeit vaguely) are making a Kenan & Kel Meet Frankenstein movie. I wonder if it's going to be a remake of the Abbott and Costello movie. Maybe on Netflix?

Scarab Sages

I saw an article about some cave art discovered by researchers. It consisted of handprints. Kind of reminded me of Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal, where Spear and other Neanderthals were known to do that.

Art meets life.

Scarab Sages

I was contemplating the (seemingly) random multitude of internet ads this morning. Mostly, I find them annoying. Occasionally, however, I have made use of them to get gifts for my wife. So they can be useful.

I've also found a (probably obvious) way around the ads that start off many YouTube videos. I just exit and restart the video over and over until the ad goes away. Sometimes it only takes one shot, at max it took 4 tries. Still, it works.

Now if only I could figure out a way around the ads that interrupt videos....

Scarab Sages

Watching more of Stargate SG-1, one thing I can appreciate is the amount of Earth civilization mythology they include in the show. I really like it, even if they stretch things a bit at times.

Scarab Sages

I read a really interesting, though I bit too long, article about the five great words in the Declaration of Independence: "All Men Are Created Equal...". Kind of heavily in favor of nurture over nature, which I pretty much agree with.

Scarab Sages

Not much planned for today (thanks a lot Winter). Some job hunting. That's about it. I might venture out around lunch time to get something for everyone. Depending on what's open. We stand a good chance of finding something, I figure. It's not like they're schools or government bureaucrats.
