Geez! The more I see about the whole Rob Reiner thing, the more sad it makes me. It's a shame to see what the Hollywood culture does to human beings.
Woot! I was able to get my DL renewal appointment for later this afternoon! Gotta love a system that seems to actually be efficient. Now I've just go to hunt down my birth certificate and Social Security card to bring with me.
Just kidding. I don't have to hunt those documents down. I know exactly where they are.
I've been toying with the idea of letting the hair on my head grow back out. If only to see just how much grey I have up there. I am, after all, old (ish). Which partially explains my status as a curmudgeon. The other part being all the wankers in the world.
Speaking of "wanker"....I had a memory of FB this morning. A meme of joke Christmas wrapping paper. At least one of them had "Merry Christmas, Wankers!" printed all over it. And I couldn't help but wish I had some of that wrapping paper right now. I've got a list of people I'd use it for.
Tonight is the scout troop's Christmas party. It's at a local place, right next to the DPS facility actually. I can't remember if I RSVP'd for the boy, or if he even wants to go. I certainly don't. Too many people might annoy me with incessant questioning about the unpleasant situation I find myself in. So if the boy does want to go, I'll probably just drive him over and drop him off. They should otherwise have plenty of adults to hang around.
Sittin in the DPS
Waitin to renew my DL
Damn! It feels like a Petri dish
Feelin so unclean
And they have the smallest pens in the world to write with. It made my hand hurt after a bit. So much so that I declined to fill out a second emergency point of contact.
Still, I’ve been here maybe half an hour. The number being served when I walked in was somewhere in the 420s. Now they just announced 471. Only 10 more to go until I get served.
And I applied to four jobs today. So….stuff is getting accomplished.
I hear there’s a new version of Animal Farm that gets it all wrong. Maybe they should leave adaptations of material like that to people who are smart enough to understand it.
Or people who aren’t filthy commies.
Sooooo close. Nine numbers to go, and suddenly they seem to have stopped making progress. Piss off Universe.
Although I have noticed the numbers aren’t always in sequence. I suppose it’s too much to ask even of a Texas driver’s license department that everything be done correctly.
They do, however, have a handy little board keeping track of all the numbers. Several of them, actually.
Ooohhh…..0476 just got announced. That’s only five away.
Aaaannnd then they announced 0496. Weird.
It grates on my mathematical sensibilities.
Well, I did eventually have my number called. And I've got the license renewal completed. They gave me a temporary paper one while the final license is made ready.
I found out the Troop Christmas party venue was changed at the last minute. They moved it back to the skating place we've had it in years past. The boy is no longer interested in going, which suits me just fine.
Now, unless my wife guilt trips me into going to pick up the daughter from pottery class (very likely) I can relax for the evening.
Dinner first. Potential relaxing later.
Mmmmm....red beans and rice.
Its a gloomy, but warmer morning. We're supposed to get some rain. Otherwise, we shall see how the day goes.
In other news....poseurs gonna pose.
Odd bit....a year or two back, the then Ops-Manager at my now former employer gave us all wireless charging stations for our phones. So of course I made sure to bring it home with me. I wasn't about to leave such a cool gift for those a-holes.
The odd bit is that it will not charge the boy's phone. We tested it yesterday, and no go.
Not much going on today. I do have to run over to the store and pick up more bottled water. Probably some pretzels for the boy. Maybe a few other items as well.
Meanwhile, the wife wants to go over to Walmart and pick up some more thick pants for the daughter. Along with maybe a few other Christmas gift items. I think I can use that opportunity as well. There are a handful of things I can get there.
For one, I want to get that gift card for my mother. And a Christmas card to send it to her. Between Walmart and the grocery store, I think I can manage to find something.
Something else I want to look for at Walmart. Along with my copy of Matt Wagner and Kelley Jones' Dracula Book II: The Brides, I purchased an add-on. This is a color poster of art from the book, signed by both Wagner and Jones.
I was toying with the idea of getting it professionally framed, but that was before my PoS former employer let me go. So now I think I'll just look for a cheap frame at Walmart. As long as they have one that offers some UV protection, I'll be happy.
If Walmart fails me on the poster frame front, Hobby Lobby is just down the road.
Speaking of stocking stuffers....
A month or two back, I noticed my comic book store offering brand new Choose Your Own Adventure books. I told the wife today I thought a few of those might make great stocking stuffers for the daughter.
I've still got a handful of those old Choose Your Own Adventure books, plus some Endless Quest books from TSR. Those were mine in my long ago youth.
I hear that Sam Wilson fans are super angry because Steve Rogers is coming back in the MCU. Sorry, but I have zero sympathy. This is a direct result of (a) the long running mistake by the comic book powers that be to never permanently allow a character to die or retire, and (b) the piss poor cinematic management of one of the most profitable IPs since 2019 (which actually seems to have become a trend with Disney).
Well, I THOUGHT I was pretty nearly done with Christmas shopping. That is, until the trip to Walmart with the wife earlier today. Turns out, all the suggestions I gave to her for gifts for my daughter were used up for her birthday a week back.
So, other than the pink soccer ball and some kind of herb growing set, we don't have much for her.
However, since I didn't get my poster frame today, I can go to Hobby Lobby and look for one tomorrow. And while I'm there I can get my daughter a few more items (including a gift from her brother). I was thinking some larger paint canvases and maybe a bigger easel.
I did get my mother a gift card. I'll get that in the mail today. With luck, the USPS won't steal it.
Watching a Youtube special show about Star Trek. Makes me want to go back and watch TOS and Next Generation again. Such awesome science fiction. Possibly some of the best I've ever seen on TV. Light years ahead of most sci-fi put out by Hollywood these days.
Damn! The show I'm watching just replayed the death of Spock from Wrath of Khan. Such an incredible scene.
Yeah, I think once I'm done with my current rewatch of Person of Interest, I'll go back to TOS and Next Generation. That should take me well into 2026.
Ew...This Star Trek show I'm watching played a clip from the godawful musical episode of one of the more recent series. Ye gods! What an abomination!
Then they made up for it by playing old commercials for Star Trek: The Motion Picture narrated by the great Orson Welles. Beautiful.
We shall see. So far it's been a mixed morning. Cloudy and foggy, but the temperature isn't too bad. And although my stomach isn't bothering me as much today, I've got a few minor aches and pains, mostly due to the weather and allergies.
Not much planned for today. Of course a bit of job hunting, though I doubt it'll be fruitful.
Later on, I'll go over to Hobby Lobby and get those last minute gifts for my daughter. I'll also check for a good frame for my Dracula Poster.
I think once I have that thing framed up, I'll hang it in the guest room where I keep the computer (and part of my collection). I've got some other comic book wall decorations to put up. Stuff I got months ago from a former co-worker.
Today would have been the group Christmas Party at my former place of employment. I don't know if they're going to still have it, considering they got rid of half the people who would've attended.
If they do still go through with it, I hope they at least have a miserable time.
The younger mechanical engineer, whom my former employer did not let go, sent me a connection request on LinkedIn. I'm currently debating whether to accept, but the odds are definitely not in her favor. I see no way in which she can be useful to me, so there's really no point.
I may try and do a bit of mapping today. They put up the entrance sign for a new neighborhood being built down the road, and the name is...inspirational.
I made it through 5-1/2 hours of that Star Trek show on Youtube yesterday. Eventually, I got a bit bored with it. And there were other things I wanted to get done anyway. Not sure how long they kept it going for. I'd heard they were shooting for over 9 hours.
