Sorry to hear about the job and family losses, Jess. Glad to hear about the new job. Congrats.

The family and I should really have you over one of these days. It's only been 4 years since we moved here.

Scarab Sages

And now I feel like a horrid friend.

Scarab Sages

Wait, no. Not "feel". I really can be a horrid friend, sometimes. It's a character flaw.

Scarab Sages

Today, we go to look at treadmills. One treadmill in particular, over at Academy. It's what the wife wants for her birthday on Monday.

I could have ordered it from the store online, but she wants to get an in-person look at it.

Scarab Sages

Tomorrow, my brother, his wife, and their kids come over for a little family get together. I'm going to do some ribs in the smoker. Maybe some corn on the grill. Maybe something else. Not sure yet.

Scarab Sages

Then, on Monday, I start my new job. Oh joy.

Glad to have you back, Jess. Here is hoping things get better. Sorry about your losses.

At the time, I was too busy focusing on the next emergency to really take it all in. That hit later. I still really miss my sweet kitty. but I have a good job, I kept two of the kittens, Yami,my grumpy old Japanese cat, is still doing well, and things could be a whole lot worse. :)

I just stabbed myself with a mechanical pencil trying to remove a plastic wrapper. There is, like, a eighth of an inch of lead embedded in the web between my thumb and fingers.

I'M GOING TO DIE OF LEAD POISONING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

New job! Congrats! I hope it looks great, and everyone is awesome, and they give you a welcome lunch!

I would love to see you guys! Don't think I have since Moorluck and Solnes moved to their house over by me. And now they'e in Florida. :(

I would see the treadmill in person too, to make sure I could have a comfortable gait on it. But to be honest, I'd probably spend that money on a new gaming PC instead. Mine needs to be replaced. I think I'm going to build one again.

The new job is....meh. I'll be glad to be making (at least some) money again, and at least working in the industry, but it's not what I wanted. As it stands, I plan to at least give them 3-6 months before I start actively looking for something else.

We'll have to find a not too busy weekend where you can come over. I can cook some good food.

I bought Kong: Skull Island on bluray the other day. Watched it last night. Such a great movie. I can see where the folks at Legendary learned their lesson from Godzilla. There was way more monster action in this one.

Scarab Sages

Got some baby back ribs and hot Italian sausage in the smoker. Working on my third cup of coffee. The kids are relatively quiet.

Happy Sunday morning to me.

Scarab Sages

Since HBO and Cinemax are free this weekend, I've taken the opportunity to DVR some movies. Last night, I watched Suicide Squad. Definitely as entertaining the second time around.

Scarab Sages

There is still cleaning that must be done.

Scarab Sages

The food I prepared for the pre-my-wife's-birthday get together was, of course, delicious. Along with the ribs and Italian sausage I did in the smoker, I fired up the grill to cook some hotdogs for the kids and sweet corn (on the cob) for the adults. There was also fruits, chips, cupcakes, ice cream, and such.

Laundry. Stellaris. Gargantia and the Verduous Planet. Ozark. Because why not.

I failed to kill any player characters in Wrath, but I did catch a bunch in a couple of blasphemies and rolled max strength damage on one of them. The wizard and the ninja were out with zero strength for two rounds...just as the brute demon got over his panicked fear of the paladin and teleported back in.

The druid managed to save them as the rest of the party ran interference, but I scared the crap out of them for 12 seconds (in game). So fun.

Congrats on new jobs!

And on scaring adventuring party members. That's always fun. (For the GM at least!) ;)

Scarab Sages

Three days in and the new job is still....meh. Like I said before, at least they're paying me (some) money. And the location is pretty decent. Most of my co-workers are okay.

The supervisor from my old job called last week and again today. I know he's wasn't calling with a job offer, because the other employees I've been speaking to say no work has been coming in. So the only reason I can think he'd be calling is to ask me a question about the projects I worked on when I was there.

And since they don't pay my salary anymore, I see no reason to return his call.

Scarab Sages

One week down on the new job. It's still "meh", but I'm getting more into it. Some of the truly annoying parts of it are the short lunch (1/2 hour), the parking sucks ass, and there are only two bathrooms.

Scarab Sages

And I'm not looking forward to September, where I'm scheduled to be away on jobs for nearly the entire month.

If they call again, and you're willing to deal, say you'll work as an outside consultant, 4 hour minimum. You'll have to deal with the taxes of a 1099 income, but that might make it worth your while. And if they say no, well then, that's fine too.

That's probably what I should have done before starting this new job. Now that I am working again, however, I don't think the new bosses would appreciate a side job.

Scarab Sages

The owl was back hooting this morning. Looking out one of the back windows, I was finally able to pinpoint the source....BOTH of them. Two big owls (mated pair, I guess), sitting together on the wires out behind the neighbor's house.

Scarab Sages

It was a balmy 100 degF yesterday afternoon (109 with the heat index). That's why I plan on going out early today to get my outside work done. Before it gets too warm.

Also, looks like I finally have a new job (pending what should be a successful round of drug testing). It's a company called Cokebusters. They do decoking and tube inspections. I'd be their Technical Manager.

It's not the job I was hoping for, but it's a job. And it doesn't pay nearly as much as my previous job, but it pays. And there seems to be some room for quick advancement in pay scale.

Missed this while I was preparing for my Yellowstone camping trip. Belated Congratulations!

Scarab Sages

Thanks. It's a bit of a step backwards, career-wise, but at least I'm getting paid.

Scarab Sages

I might not have mentioned this, but while we were doing some gardening out front on Sunday, the boy found a baby snake in the garage. Very tiny, no bigger than a worm.

Anyway, I got the snake out of the garage and into the garden area. Today, as we were stepping out for our journey to daycare, we saw the snake travelling across the sidewalk to the main part of the front lawn.

Scarab Sages

Also, on the way to daycare, I encountered someone who was either drunk, extremely stupid, or perhaps did not know how to properly drive. Maybe all even all three.

This person was in front of us in the turn lane. When the light turned green, the person sort of just started to creep forward for about 10 seconds, then finally started to move. After completing our turns, he got in the left lane, so I got in the right lane. I passed the person up, thank the gods. When we got to the next light I kept going straight, while I noticed in my rear view mirror the person, still in the left lane, turned right onto the side street.

So he basically turned into what would have been my path if I had been lagging behind him.

Scarab Sages

Both of my bosses have gone off on a site visit to Lake Charles. That leaves myself, the Workshop Manager, and the Secretary/HR lady in charge.

I promised them I would be a benevolent dictator.

You are indeed a kind and benevolent Zombie Overlord!

Scarab Sages

So, we've got three big Peterbilts at work, used for hauling the machines to various job sites in the country. Two of them are leased and used regularly. The third, which I've come to call Big Red, is owned by the company and not used very often. As such, it has...problems.

Most recently, it would not start. This was a problem, because the truck was blocking the trailer we need to go pick up a cargo container on Monday. The mechanic swore it was the batteries. So we get four new batteries, replace them, and it still won't start. The workshop manager now thinks it's the starter, which was just replaced back in early July.

Anyway, to get it out of the way, the shop guys used a mixture of person power, forklift power, and careful steering. It was....entertaining.

Scarab Sages

So that was one problem I thought would give me a headache, which turned out easily solved.

Next up, I've got a transmission, the manufacturer of which is apparently no longer in business, needing to be fixed. The boss wants to use it as a spare.

Scarab Sages

And I've got to arrange for multiple state/federal inspections, make sure several folders of information are all up to date, arrange for pressure testing of pumps using a half-assed, in-house test rig, and prepare for all the work we'll need to fix the machine returning from the Dominican Republic.

Somewhere in all that, I've also got to get a new passport, bug the s&+! out of the hose vendor, prepare for a visit by the Cummins Tech, and learn the ins and outs of de-coking and tube inspections.

Scarab Sages

I keep telling myself....at least it's a job, and at least I'll be getting paid.

Scarab Sages

Of course, then there's the voice in my brain telling me I took a huge pay cut for all this hassle.

Scarab Sages

Oh yes, lest we forget - there's also the "scheduled to be on travel nearly the entire month of September" part. That's oh so f$#%ing thrilling.

Scarab Sages

On a (potentially) more positive note - we're probably taking the kids to the Museum of Natural Science tomorrow. My brother and his family are going.

Scarab Sages

Of course, that means I've got a lot to do today.

Scarab Sages

Season 3 of Voltron: Legendary Defender was....short. Entertaining and informative, but short.

Scarab Sages

Everyone had a blast at the Houston Museum of Natural Science today. The only bummer part about the visit was the lack of adequate dining space for lunch, and that the only lunch available in the museum was McDonalds.

F!%* you, Monday.

Tuesday isn't much better...

Scarab Sages

No, it was not.

Scarab Sages

Stoopid training class all the way across town. Oh well, at least I didn't have to spend the day in the office.

Scarab Sages

It's weird, with the new job, I thought for sure I'd miss being able to spend more time here and on Facebook.

Not really, though.

Scarab Sages

I'm going to start looking into definite ways to "cut the cord", so to speak. My hope is to find just an internet provider. Once that's done, we already have Netflix and Amazon Prime accounts.

Then there would just be the matter of weaning baby girl off Disney.

Scarab Sages

For the second week in a row, I arrived home a little late from work and they had started family movie night without me. Considering they were watching WALL-E (again), I was not sorry to have been late.

Scarab Sages

Now it's time to veg out in front of the computer screen, waiting for the wife to go to bed so I can have some peace and quiet.
