FAQ

Spontaneous Casting and Multiple Classes: Can I spontaneously cast spells from one of my classes using a different class’s spell slots?

No. This is only possible if you have a class feature that explicitly allows it, such as Combined Spells. This applies even if the two classes share a spell list or if one of the classes allows you to spontaneously convert that class’s spell slots into certain spells on that class’s spell list, such as cleric and druid.

PDT is back!

Thanks.

Thanks, although I can't say I'm thrilled about the change to Paragon Surge. When I made my Life Oracle I was deciding between Aasimar and Half-elf. I ended up choosing the latter because of Paragon Surge, and I'm currently in the middle of the Eldritch Heritage feat tree. Now I'll probably scale it back and do some retraining.

Was Paragon Surge really in that much need of a nerf?

This is actually in reference to the Cleric/Wizard spontaneous healing thread with a bunch of FAQ requests. The thread was locked, so it got a new home.

This series of FAQs is awesome. Thanks, yall.

Mark, someone mentioned in the other thread that it might help to have at least one specific example in these to show "hey here's why this matters." Since this came up here as well, with you having to clarify that "this is actually in reference to," I'd say it might be worth considering adding that to future FAQ answers. (These honestly do come off as a little abstract and "hey why *does* this come up?" to me, have to think about it for a second, and I'm around these forums quite a bit!)

Thanks again. :-)

Honestly, Surge is still extremely potent in any sort of home game. It has less application in PFS which tends to run more on rails but turning on level 3 slot into a spell of your highest level or two or lower levels every day is still pretty damn good. Training out of Heritage is probably good idea though.

Yeah, it may have been more apparent if that thread was not locked since presumably whichever of the four of us did the PDT post would have put it in that thread. The PDT is an admin and so theoretically still could have done it, but then since the thread was locked and this subforum has a lot of traffic, it would have fallen off the front page quickly.

Probably. I can't count the number of people (myself included) with characters abusing the mechanic. It is so strong you will build characters around the race to get access.

I'm also thrilled with PDT being back and tackling some of the heated issues.

The whole Cleric/Wizard spontaneously casting from Wizard slots thread had both sides angry to the core. At least now we have an answer.

Not a surprise. After a point I backed away because, as James Risner aptly put it, some topic make me "angry at the core".

Man I can't even keep up with all these FAQs!

At this rate we'll need a whole new "FAQ Announcement" sub-forum. =D

Loving the hard and fast FAQS!

In the end, I don't even mind what the resolution is (my wiz/cleric MT is sad about this one) - having a resolution is what matters the most!

I don't mean to derail, but what were people doing with Paragon Surge?

Sczarni

From my understanding, 11th level Half-elf spellcasters were grabbing Improved Eldritch Heritage via Paragon Surge and combining it with the Arcane Bloodline to gain any Wizard/Sorcerer spell of their choosing for the duration of Paragon Surge.

It's a niche trick, and my (currently) 8th level Oracle was building up to it, but I didn't think it was OP enough to smack with a nerf bat.

Perhaps with the new ACG classes there were possible combinations even more powerful. *shrug*

Sorcerers and Oracles could both take Expanded Arcana with it to gain spontaneous access to any spell from their list. Oracles could use Improved Eldritch Heritage (Arcane: New Arcana) to gain access to any wizard spell.

Dark Archive

Just want to point out that Psionic power points from different manifesting classes can be used to manifest powers from either class. Something I enjoyed doing myself in 3.0 before psychic warriors got access to body adjustment in 3.5 themself.

Sczarni

There are no Psionics in Pathfinder, though.

Dark Archive

I specifically mentioned my experience useing Psionics in both 3.0 & 3.5. Pathfinder has been on the D&D compatible bandwagon for many years. It may be it's own system, it may now be introducing a Pathfinder unchained line breaking away from backwards compatibility, but that does not take away the core rulebook's backwards compatible design feature. Pathfinder also alows other companies to make Pathfinder compatible products like the Psionics works of 3rd party publisher dreamscared press.

Just want to add my thanks to PDT for coming back with a vengeance.

I missed this one. Now I have to see what else I missed.
