I do believe it's Paizo's fault. You see, they released Mythic Adventures and prepared Wrath of the Righteous for it, but Mummy's Mask wasn't made to use with the Mythic rules, so the games have been centered on WoTR or Homebrew games where they can use the Mythic rules more easily.
I'm playing in a fast-paced group who is doing pretty well, and I'm finding the AP to be awesome, although for now we did not understood the main plot of the AP yet. And we're using mythic rules. Go GM!

Usually around this time for a new AP, there’s a half-dozen recruitment threads running. I’ve only noticed a handful for Mummy’s Mask. What gives? Is the Egyptian setting/themes not terribly popular in PBP land? Does the AP have some glaring problems?
As a DM, I can tell you that Mummy's Mask is mostly a dungeon crawl game and not everyone enjoys that. Also because it is new, not everyone has the money for it yet, as lot of DMs may have saved up their money for the campaigns they are running now that they started a few months ago to a few years ago. And yes MM is expensive like 15-25 bucks each book.

I'm in a Mummy's Mask pbp that had no recruitment thread, I wonder if more and more people are doing APs with a known group rather than recruiting.
Unless people are calling their campaigns by secret code words, I don't think there's anymore private Mummy's Masks games running than any other AP.

The game I opened was invite only. So far I'm really enjoying DMing it, and I hope to be in for the long haul. It almost immediately throws you into a series of dungeons, which for me is kind of perfect.
As far as I can tell my players are enjoying it. That or they're just choosing to suffer in silence. But I've been running the game since April and haven't lost a single player yet. Which is a little amazing, really.
I'm actually more shocked that no one is asking for D&D 5th Edition games, since the Basic rules have just become available for download. But I'm hoping that once the Starter Set is more widely available that someone will offer it up.

The basic 5E rules are kinda horrifically oversimplified in how they're presented. The entire PDF is basically a giant advertisement for the books themselves.
I'm sorry, but you seem to mention those things as if they are problems. :-)
I'll cop that the game isn't for everyone. But really offering something for free in the hopes that people will be interested in the full product just seems like good marketing.
I wonder if other companies might get in on that. Why, they might even make a whole event out of it. A Free RPG Day, if you will.

I'm running a MM, everyone still interested submit a character. I'll allow one more character in and you will be in as soon as I reach book 2.
Level 4, possibly level 5, depending upon the exp, it will be close.

Just started one... open call recruitment. Only 5 to 6 players will be selected.
It is up to you to impress me with your character. There can be only six.

I agree it seems like a smaller group of people running this one, unfortunately. I thought about it, but honestly, I'm waiting for Iron Gods, which I'm a bit more excited about (and four games is my limit, I've decided).
I do think there's also something to the idea of more PBPs being private. I haven't decided when I run Iron Gods yet whether it'll be open recruitment or not, for example.
I also think there seems to be a ton of PFS scenarios being run these days. I wonder if the pendulum has swung to more short-form PBP games, which I could also understand happening.
