Wizard Starting Spells Higher than First Level

Advice

Hi all,

I'm setting up a PBP game over on the forums here that's going to start at 7th level, and I had a player inquire with me how many starting spells a wizard would get. I realized that I don't actually know what the standard practice (if anything) is. Do they just get their first-level spells plus the normal level increase ones? Or is there some mechanic to mimic the finding of spells and spellbooks that would normally happen?

Thanks for your help!

Spells added to their spellbook aside from those gained from leveling should be reduced from their wealth accordingly.

Based on what costs?

Per scroll?

That depends on whether you allowed them to learn from other casters or made them buy scrolls and then scribe them.

my group bases the price as per scroll

relevant table here.

Basically, you can copy spells from another wizard's spellbook.

In most cases, wizards charge a fee for the privilege of copying spells from their spellbooks. This fee is usually equal to half the cost to write the spell into a spellbook (see Writing a New Spell into a Spellbook). Rare and unique spells might cost significantly more.

Purchasing a 4th level spell would cost 240 gp for the fee and inscribing.

Here is a basic strategy that your 7th level wizard should be capable of:

1) Take the Craft Wondrous Item Feat
2) Craft a blessed book (basically buy it at half price)
3) Buy spells and scribe them for free.

So now that 4th level spell will only cost you 80 gp to scribe (after you pay for the book). This item GREATLY reduces the cost of spells for you, and is pretty much required for the class to be played well.

Later, you can pretty much make money for free by casting fabricate spells. In the mean time, just get that book and then spend about 1/3-1/2 of your starting wealth on it and on spells to fill it with. Remember that you can buy spells that you can't cast yet.

A PFS guideline that might suit would be 150 percent of the scribing cost. Each spell to be approved individually by judge.

I haven\t yet consulted with my game master, but the method I used was scroll + scribing costs.

Level five spells are hideously expensive... Something like 1200 gp per spell.

Don't consult your GM. Consult the book. The book gives scribing costs as MUCH lower than the cost of a scroll.

In fact if you ever find a scroll, DON'T scribe it into your book. Instead, sell it, and use the money to scribe the spell at a fraction of the cost.

Scrolls are ammo, not knowledge.

Pick spells one class level at a time.

1st level: A number of 1st level spells equal to 3 + Int mod
2nd level: two spells from the 1st level list
3rd level: two spells from the 1st or 2nd level lists
and so on...

As a wizard, the character can pick as many additional spells as desired, but they should be paid for from whatever starting money the character has, either through buying or scribing scrolls.
