small mounted character help needed.

Advice

I like the concept of a small mounted character on a medium mount starting at level 1. is that possible? i like the idea of a beetle, ant, or such as a mount, race is secondary. it seems ranger would have to wait until lvl 4, unsure how a fighter or barbarian could pull it off. and i don't know that much about druids to know it it would be feasible. i know he wouldn't be uber, just looking for non-gimped.

the only reason for small character on a medium mount is the idea of a large mount in a dungeon being non viable. i can't see a horse climbing through a cave to well.

Ask your GM.

Wouldn't happen at my table because beetles and ants are mindless vermin. The important word there is mindless. Untrainable.
Use a riding dog.

A small druid can ride any of the animal companions that start at med size wolf being most common, cavalier can also start with a med size mount (pony and wolf at lv1) for a exotic mount you will need to check with your gm and likely wait till your a lv for the appropriate animal companion or cavalier mount (4th lv for cavalier I think) I have a small sized cavalier and its been a lot of fun.

You could always purchase a mount before you get the AC class feature if you wanted to be a Ranger for example.

I think the Giant Gecko is pretty cool - built in Spider Climb!

ooh, and the gecko is kinda cheap too, i like the small tiefling concept i just read too. with large arms, I'd get medium weapons, and with a heritage pitborn deamonspawn, even a str bonus. what's not to like, lol, now to just get it through the GM,

hmm, rogue, ranger or fighter

Past. Cavalier. ;) if you are going for a go anywhere, fit any place mount why not a class designed to use a mount?

This can be done very easily.
Cavalier, Druid, Nature Oracle, Sylvan Sorcerer (Wildblooded) Mad Dog Barbarian and Summoner can get mounts from first level.
Ranger, Cleric or Inquisitor with the Animal, Feather or Fur domain, Mounted Fury Barbarian and to a degree the Paladin gain mounts at 4th or 5th level.

Honestly though if you're wanting to do mounted combat, go the Cavalier, there is plenty of stuff out there for them, The Beast Rider archetype opens up more mount options.

As far as vermin and other mindless stuff goes, there is a druid archetype that will allow you to get vermin animal companions. Mindless is a great defensive ability but your mount is going to know a lot less tricks with no int score.

Hi I'm a gecko Riding Halfling Ranger.

Its my dungeon Buster.

The issue with a wolf, pony, ext. Is they are stumped when they come to a cliff or a ladder. My gecko laughs at those lowbie challenges and provides me with a perfect climb check.

Also those small ground bound wolves have trouble with difficult terrain....I just climb the walls and charge from there or move to a low ceiling and charge from the higher ground.

Most classes only get the creatures list. Only a few archetypes gets the full druid companion list. The beastmaster Ranger is one that gets the entire list. So I chose Giant Gecko. You could also ride a Dire Bat, roc, or Giant eagle/owl. Typically flyers have an advantage of air supremacy. But a lot of the Animal feats will go to feats to make it usable. Hover, Fly-by-attack, Wing Over, Valiant steed. My gecko has feats that support my character. Combat reflexes, Body Guard, Valiant steed. He can help make up that 2 AC when I charge or provide me with AC when someone gets on me. If I need to take to the air I have trained him in Air Walk trick and a point in Fly skill. I can use a potion of fly or a scroll of air walk.

Cavalier is also a good strong choice they have beast rider archetype.

As for race I highly recommend a Outrider Halfling. You can make up the STR negative with the feat risky striker.

If you want to see a build click my avatar and I have the entire character drawn out.

Edit: I bought the Giant Gecko at level 1 for 150g. Just used him until I got the companion class feature. @ level 2 I bought him MW studded Leather to help him stay alive. At Level 4 I bonded with it and it got stronger. At 5 I took boon companion. (if your going over level 12 of ranger it isn't necessary but I am stopping at 11 levels of ranger for PFS so it was a feat tax.)

thanks guys, you've helped out a lot

oh, Thistlefoot, did you take mounted archery? I didn't see any lvl 6 feat listed for ranger feat. or trick riding.

ah, improved emphatic link for 6th, but no mounted archery?

Grand Lodge

No mounted archery.

When you choose mounted combat you pick either lance or bow.

Im going to stop at level 12 for pfs. Lancers are some of the highest DPR levels 1-11.

T he feats on both are different.
