Drunken characters

Rules Questions

A quick search for conditions concerning intoxicated characters resulted only finding rules for drunken barbarians and drunken masters.

But what about normal characters under influence excess amounts of wine or other alcoholic drinks.

of course there should be some variance regarding the stage of intoxication.

slightly drunk
heavily drunk
and maybe one more even severer stage? Any ideas?
benefits? penalties?

I take a -10 on CHA skills myself...

Sovereign Court

I'd use conditions for being significantly drunk but still able to act (Sickened) or being totally wasted (Nauseated).

You might like to take a look at the Intoxication rules from Gamemastery Guide. That's all I've ever been able to find.

Sovereign Court

I'm not wild about those drug rules. I think the aftereffects tend to last unreasonably long because they rely on healing ability damage.

The amount of ability damage it takes to reduce someone to being generally uselessness is on the high side (6+, usually), which means that if you drink yourself into unconsciousness you're probably going to enjoy a weeklong hangover.

That strikes me as excessive. Macho adventurers should be able to handle their alcohol better than normal players, not far far worse.

From personal experience...a half litre of vodka with a full meal will give me a bad headache and sour stomach 12 hours later...but I forgot to drink water...

Overall I'd take an approach along these lines. I might be inclined to change Nauseated to Sickened and Staggered (with either of the drunken states yielding Fort saves (DC to be decided) to avoid becoming Nauseated for some a brief time ... probably before passing out). And while I might not directly penalize or modify Wisdom/Will saves the effect of Sickened will be there.

those are some strong drugs in the gamemastery guide (which I dont have as a book). but as they say "meth, not even once".

well I went with dazzled for being happy drunk while winging it. But will have to do something else if player get more heavily drunk. slight hangover penalty might be in effect if the fort save fails.

and my eyes totally missed this part on the first glance
"Just like drugs, alcohol can be abused and have significant negative effects. In general, a character can consume a number of alcoholic beverages equal to 1 plus double his Constitution modifier. Drinks consumed in excess of this total cause the character to become sickened for 1 hour per drink above this maximum. Particularly exotic or strong forms of alcohol might be treated as normal drugs. Those who regularly abuse alcohol might eventually develop a moderate addiction."

There is a "drunk" template from Book of Beasts: Monsters of the River Nations, copyright 2010 Jon Brazer Enterprises; Author Steven Helt.

Drunk:
Drunk (CR -1)
When humanoids and monstrous humanoids consume sufficient alcohol, their senses and ability to fight are impaired

Quick Rules: –2 penalty on all attack rolls, weapon damage rolls, saving throws, skill checks, and ability checks.

Rebuild Rules: Condition sickened.

Is official rules from Gamemastery Guide.

I know that the skulls and shackles campaign dealt with a lot of drinking and drunk people. although I'd be dammed if I can still remember those rules.
