Cold Iron Alchemical Bullets

Pathfinder Society

**

So earlier there was a post about cold-iron alchemical bullets, and the discussion went in the direction of blanching which is not allowed. That is understandable. However can the bullet used inside the alchemical cartridge be cold iron?
Mike commented on this and mentioned this as a custom item, but does it have to be custom?
Cold-Iron seems to be a key-word which can be applied to certain weapons. I believe you can get cold iron bullet (not alchemical). I don't see why you can't purchase cold iron alchemical cartridges from a vender. Especially with the Year of the Demon, I would think weapon venders might see it as profitable to make alchemical cartridges using cold iron. It would probably be a hot item.

Again, this is not regarding blanching the cartridge.

Heh, was kinda surprised to see that old thread of mine resurface...

Yes, you can have cold iron bullets, as well as cold iron alchemical cartridges; these follow the standard special materials rules, and a cold iron cartridge is no more a "custom item" than a cold iron short sword.

EDIT: You don't need to worry about the paper or the like for making alchemical cartridges with special materials; you just use the special material rules to have the BULLET made out of the material.

You may have missed the most recent comment by Mike Brock indicating that such special material cartridges are considered custom crafted items in PFS.

His most recent comment said that it should be posted to the design team, and that without clarification from them, it was considered a custom item.

He said that having just the ball be the special material would be a custom item. He did not overturn his previous ruling that you can just buy the whole cartridge with the material type applied.

I'm not sure how you think I managed that, seeing as that was posted in the very thread I started off the post you quoted by saying I noticed resurfacing.

The post Mike Brock was replying to wasn't particularly clear, and implied opening the cartridge to replace the bullet, which would certainly result in a custom item not allowed in PFS. That said, a cartridge wherein the bullet itself is a special material is no more a custom item than it would be to make a wooden-hafted weapon such as, say, a great axe, out of a special material such as cold iron.

Very nice Sir! I'm guessing the "per bullet" cost and availability applies equally to a "per handful of pellets"?

Indeed, though I honestly just forgot to include them in the list.

Nefreet - using the prices you calculated, I made an ammo tracker that I print out and keep with any of my characters who have firearms. I figured I should post the link to share in case anyone else can find it useful.

But you still need to buy enough ammo to last you through a full turn.

which Ioun Stone lets you hold a wand?

...and I'm sure you have a trick to let you cast from it without wasting skill points in UMD or taking a wiz dip hmmmmmmm? :)

None, it was a turn of phrase, a cracked vibrant purple Ioun stone allows you to store a single spell (level 1 I think, but could be wrong) like a ring of spell storing.

You can activate it as a standard action, no attack of opportunity, no risk of failing a UMD and you don't have to hold a wand in your hand.

So pick up wand, at the start of every scenario cast wands spell into stone, and then use stone during mission.

Missed a step - hand the wand to a caster in the party to have him charge the stone. And re-fill it after every fight.

I found this as a nice self-handicap with my musket master. She could generally kill something in a round, and had very high initiative. While going first and killing the thing is efficient, it's not much fun for other players or the GM. Spending my first turn on the stone let everyone get to go before I started killing things.

Now if things were in a hurry, I can skip the stone and go with my +19 init mod when needed...

On the subject of ammo types though. Your (gunslinger) knowledge check question should always be DR. If you fail it, burst fire. One ammo of each type, see which one takes the best. Have it always be the same sequence (cold, silver, adamantine, e.bronze) and you'll never have to worry about separating player knowledge from character knowledge.

Dark Archive ****

Or as you are a ranged character you could just take clustered shots and only subtract the DR once, as by the time you are level 6 you should be shooting up to 8 times a round with a single double barrelled firearm which should be enough that their DR is pretty meaningless.

Too bad you either need to cast a spell or use a scroll to load a spell into a spell-storing item. A spell from a wand can't be used to load a spell-storing item.
