Ordikon's staff was Kyra's, but transferred over to him for the last scenario only. The extra weapon and ally were the last card feats from winning the game. 5 weapons was plenty, and he held onto the Troubadour for the whole game, never found anything that suited him better. He was a beast on the Mountain Peak. He'd always go there first thing during a game, never lost a card to it, especially with the Headband. And for combat... well, with Dex+3 and +3 ranged, and magical weapons, and the accessory, he frequently got +8-+10 before rolling dice. Deathbane Xbow got replaced with the extra Giantbane dagger when we started facing the Wardens more often.

The Toad was the only ally she had for the vast majority of the game. Funnily enough, Mass Cure showed up for her in the final scenario. Mokmurian's club did very well for her. Especially against undead. Healing two cards per whack is heavy. She had the Falchion, but the Glaive works better. For about half of the campaign, Kyra really ran hot and cold. Either she was on fire and could do no wrong, or she was a wet noodle who could do nothing at all of any use.

Emerald Codex: This was with Lem throughout the game, being banished during Into the Eye. It provided Detect Magic, Augury, and Raise Dead; I couldn't have asked for better divine spells. Raise Dead displaced the Augury I had going in to Into the Eye; said Augury stayed in when I dropped a Raise Dead I found earlier, because I wanted all the scouting I could get my hands on for Into the Eye.

Sihedron Medallion: Lem also had this throughout; it was dropped to make room for the Robes of Xin-Shalast.

Adamantine Plate Armor and Ilsoari Gandethus: These were pickups from Assault on the Pinnacle; Lem wanted better allies and Valeros could use better armors.

This character was a TON of fun. This was not my first character, but the first to actually use a role card. She was able to heal effectively, while still being able to mix it up with some cool weapons. Highly recommend!!


We played two variants: first, my son was discouraged in the early going about how little Valeros could explore, so we gave up two armor slots in Valeros' deck for allies; second, we didn't realize there was a limit on promos and we added five Zarongels, thinking that made sense for blessings. This gave Sajan more power than we anticipated. Sajan drew into a strong hand before the last turn against Karzoug and took the second check, rolling 102.

This group lost a single scenario, Underneath Sandpoint, when we got too greedy hunting for boons. No deaths.

Our decks changed significantly between Assault on the Pinnacle and Into the Eye. We ditched two Masterwork Tools, a Find Traps, and the Staff of Heaven and Earth to have more scouting, protection and healing. Earlier, people put their last skill feat into Constitution anticipating Karzoug's damage check.

Played over my lunch breaks for several months, I managed to slowly solo my way through the whole thing. no deaths, no time outs, but several bail-outs (voluntary letting the clock tick out). Been playing with my wife very slowly for the last four or five months. Incredible game and very happy to have finally finished. There were a few deaths early on and then a few times we had to run away but overall it was great. Lem had a big power spike in the middle of the game then fell off a little bit towards the end (around the time my wife swopped all her cures for damage) before she got her power feat to help her on her own checks whereas Valeros just trundled along like a big meat beating idiot that he is - slow to explore but good to smash and help Lem with his fighting

My wife and I started this a while back, but it got put on hold while we welcomed a new PC to our family... Once we were able to play games again, we rushed to finish RotR so we could get caught up.

I played Ezren and she played Valeros, which worked fairly well. We had huge trouble with Scaling Mhar Massif, though; I was the only one who could (barely) make the Wisdom checks to close, and she was the only one who could reliably kill the Leng Spiders. On the third try, we emptied both decks but couldn't close the last one, and decided to call it a victory and move on.

I played Ezren/Seelah and a friend played Lem/Kyra. In the second half we changed the rules to a variant where we seeded the henchmen/villains into the latter half of the deck to eat more of the timer.

Kyra died once in AD4; we didn't replay all the previous scenarios for the sake of time and granted her scenario rewards to catch her up. However, we only kept the cards that could be kept between the remaining 3 characters in between scenarios and had her deck recreated based on adventure deck rules for new characters before trading around.

For Seelah, I totally would've not taken more weapons, but more weapons was a better choice than more armor IMO.

Holy did we ever have a hard time with closing anything with Wisdom, Apparently we didn't take the best crew to do that, but we survived. Quite a few close calls, and to be honest we got really lucky on the Final missions due to Karazoug happening to be on the bottom of the deck. However Bekah (me) almost died in 3 avalanches and an icy ledge on the Death zone. It was also interesting taking Damiel into RotRL, since there wasn't much variety in potions, but he was a beast at times especially after getting the Impaler of Thorns. Radillo did her thing on her own location all the time, it was usually a race between her and Harsk in who would close a loaction first. Lini was great support throughout and really shone in the last 2 adventure paths when she really was the only one with Wisdom and was able to close pretty well any location. What's that? Death Zone is a 18 Wisdom to close? Lini's got it easy.

Sailed through everything except for AP2 with the Skinsaw Man, Haunts and Iesha Foxglove. Took 4 tries for the stars to align just so. This scenario was extremely punishing for a solo player. Barely scraped by with a win against Karzoug, eight cards goes by so fast because of all the hard checks you have to make.

The ability to defeat barrier against their weakest difficulty with a d12+7 base is extremely helpful. The book of knowledge becomes recharge to defeat a barrier. I thought the reveal a book to add 1d4 to any check would be a must have but actually to ability to have a magic spyglass effect from recharging a book was more vital. You just can't go around encountering cards unless you know what they are ahead of time. An arcanist must always be prepared and how can you be prepared without fully researching the future possibilities. Before the ability to defeat barriers with knowledge the masterwork tools were critical.

The ability to self heal spells when casting spells is key. Detect magic and augury were staples for essentially the whole game as were wands of minor healing, surgeons and as much healing as I could find during the adventure. Almost every spell and every item are auto-acquired. When I did take damage, it was usually spells that were easily recharged after a turn or 2. I had to pause now and then to churn cards and rearrange my hand before continuing on to the next encounter (which I knew ahead of time) and would change locations and come back later when I had the right cards.


I played Lini & Amiri and the BF played Ezren & Athnul.

We ditched a ton of spells and other cards to optimize the final scenario and went all in on "put a *spell* under this card" for adventure 6.4, and ditched all cold and electricity attack spells due to 6.5 henchmen. Wanted to make sure we could keep the villain on the bottom of the deck.

This is why Ezren has such a strange combo of spells, and why so there are many Scrying/Augury/Spyglass/Magic Spyglass type scouting cards in the party.

Lini died mid way through the game (forgot a location had effect "+2 handsize") but was resurrected by a lucky raise dead from Amiri's Emerald Codex!

Thoughts:
With Valeros and Lem's assists, I never rolled the dice unless I had a 98% chance of success. Seelah's final attack was a 60 out of 116. The type of armor didn't matter because I only ever used it for the Bury power except for the rare few with Reveal powers.

I only beat the next to last mission because I lucked out and got the mountaineer.

Our second run-through of RotR, this time with two characters apiece. (We'll probably do two apiece again when we play S&S as it was a lot more fun.) I played Meliski and Flenta, and my wife played Zarlova and Melindra. A photo of the Lego version of the group we used, before I replaced Wu Jen with Flenta, can be found here.

I've heard that RotR is relatively easy, and that must be the case because it wasn't until halfway through Adventure 5 that I decided to read the S&S rules thoroughly, and discovered that we had been doing two things wrong. First, we thought that only one card of a type could be played on a check globally, so if Flenta played a Blessing on Zarlova's check, no more blessings could be played. Second, we were playing that a character encountering a monster requiring two combat checks (ie. 20 THEN 25) had to do both combats, instead of letting another character at that location handle one. Which seemed to favor fighters over spell-casters a lot.

Despite these handicaps, we got through with only a couple do-overs and no deaths -- the closest was when the undefeated Leng Spider lunged over and randomly damaged Zarlova, who barely had enough cards left to draw her hand the next turn.

Played with my wife and finished the first run of the game in about one and half years. As you can see, our characters are far from optimized. But, we only died during the last battle with Karzoug, and we had to repeat that scenario over and over again till we managed to get the Revelation Quill to put Karzoug at the bottom of the deck.

Finished the campaign months ago, but only now getting around to adding on our finished characters. We kept our only death to Kyra back in Fort Rannick. That player dropped soon after, and we brought in another player who played Seelah (who proceeded to make my Valeros redundant- it wasn't the fighter who was taking out henchmen barehanded). But- that player also left the group just before the end, so final adventure was just the five, succeeding on almost the last card.

Our biggest stumbling block by far was Scaling Mhar Massif. We failed 2 or 3 times before finally splitting the party and doing it in two groups of three.
