Let the speculation begin!
This is unusually cruel, Mr. Dancey.
Then again, speculation can be fun...
Speculation, you have two computer towers at war with each other, two towers enter one tower leaves.

Oh hey, when I log in and check the Goblinworks blog...
I see nothing new yet.
Ryan, am I going to have to find your number and give you a call in the middle of the night?

I'm going to speculate wildly that PFO has been redesigned around a tower defense game. Think this is clear from the OP. :)

When I saw this thread, as I am sure most everyone did, I was like "WTF, I was just on the GW site and there wasn't a blog?" So thanx, thank you for showing us Evil is supported in PFO!!!
As for speculation, how about this.... One of two things:
Settlement warfare has been found to be easy to implement and will be in very early, and this blog is all the details.
OR
A blog about how raiding and POIs will work, specifically watchtowers.
Those are my first thoughts.
I bet it's a story from the GW guys playtesting the game and staging a tiny battle.

The game has been revamped and is now a tower defense MMO.
you tricky goblins you.....
You just stole a piece of my soul..Norgorber will not be happy, when he gets a partial soul from me D:
War of the Towers... I'd guess it's something about how NPC factions compete with each other using players, incentivised with a reward system. The name referring to the tower(s) of Thornkeep versus the Towers of Fort Inevitable.
I'm guessing this is about a "Capture the Flag" PvP event the staff setup for a skirmish to test the system out. Video to be included.
How about the beginning ideas for formation combat and use of siege towers against PoIs and settlements? I have been looking forward to more information on formations, since I see the slot GW had posted a few months ago some new(er) goblin must be in the cave in Seattle tinkering with the mechanics for formation combat.
I remain hopeful!
You know, he didn't say anything about their being two towers, specifically. I think we've all been watching too much LOTR, if you ask me. ;)
But if it is two towers, specifically, I speculate that Lisa and Ryan got into a fight, and are now on opposite sides of an argument.
Let the war begin. *grins*

I'm hoping for a video blog w/ some in-game footage.
Clearly plans to change it to a MOBA and the post will be about how to tower push...
So the druid in the crumbling tower in the swamp made it into the game before everyone thought it would be possible and then the inquisitor, who lives in the tower on the hill decided to flay a kobold who gurgled witch-like incantations about the horse in the field. Then a zombie rose out of the ground... am I close?

Just finished editing the video but <looks around deserted office> there is no way to push it live tonight. So I'll update the blog tomorrow morning and then have Bonny alert the world that it is live.
Burning the midnight oil I see, thanks for putting in those hours. Looking forward to the blog
so.. you already implemented siege system on the first day of alpha? Wow, that's even faster than I hoped.

"Ok Wizard, cast your spell!"
what are new here?
two years making this game and no playtest yet?

Alpha will be very soon

Playtesting by friends and family of the devs started last week. An open playtest is expected by this weekend.
This is a low-budget, cautious production. They're doing pretty well for that.
Development of WoW began in 1999; their beta opened in 2004. Two years between the tech demo kickstarter and a playable alpha is great progress.
Now that the blog is live...
Will the towers be permanent or are they just to flesh things out early on? Ie. once full settlement mechanics go live (after the Great Disaster or whatever you want to call it) will towers be phased out?

@Nightdrifter - the War of Towers is a placeholder for real Settlement warfare. The Towers will eventually be removed. It is likely that they'll transition to something else like Points of Interest (or whatever the Crowd Forges that name into). How that transition happens is very much tbd.
Oooh... well, that changes a few things. :]

I have alerted the masses! I can't wait to live stream! Muahahahahah
Will the settlement templates allow for balanced or multirole development, or will each settlement have to specialize in just one character role?
Can players change their settlement's template, or is that a permanent one -time choice?
Will the settlement template model have any lasting effects post-Great Cataclysm, or do we start from scratch at that point?
Not sure how I feel about this placeholder. Haven't watched the video yet, when I have a chance to, maybe it'll change my mind.
Great blog! I was worried it would be too long in EE until real warfare escalated it seems GW was too.
Will settlements keep thier progress when towers are wiped and proper settlement controls are implemented? Or will everyone start on the same footing regardless of EE success?
Can individual companies control more than one tower at a time for its settlement?
Is the PvP window liner in increase ( like 1 hour per tower controlled) or more algebraic?
Thanks for the changes guys Im really excited for EE now more than ever!
I second Guurzak's questions about how this will affect our settlements once we do start upgrading our settlements with resources.
Also, as Ryan has indicated that many of these towers will transfer into POI's (or whatever they end up being called) will the control that we establish now have any effect when they are transformed?
Or will that transformation start before Beta starts?

Ryan, BTW you might want to know that the kickstarter rewards have actually started to arrive already. I got mine yesterday. Despite going out the same day, it actually beat my regular monthly Paizo subscription delivery, which is scheduled to be delivered today.
Everything looks great. Only 'problem' is that now I am looking at some of the Paizo products (e.g. flip mats and cards) that I never bothered buying before and wondering if maybe I really need to start.
If one of the Big 3 gives up their spot, what happens to that spot in the Land Rush? Also would the request that members that voted for one of the Big 3 to still vote for that settlement as to not be counted twice, still be valid?

Looks like absolutely another game, nothing like sandbox. In this version, you have no chance of actually "building" anything form sand; instead, your only option is hitting other kids' heads with your toy spade, and as result of your hitting sandcastles are supposed to rise from the sand themselves. Somehow.
Doesn't make any esthetic sense for me other than keeping people busy with nonconsenual PvP regardless of alignment and playstyle. Hope some decent PvE content will be ready by EE, because right now it acually starts looking like murderfest play.
Shiny! Glad to see that some real territory control mechanics will be there right from the (close to the?) start of EE.
Will settlements be able to move their PvP window around the day? Does it have to be contiguous? Say Golgotha has 8 towers, and we have an 8 hour PvP window, can we do 4 hours, then have an hour long break, and then another 4 hours?
The lack of reputation mechanics involved actually makes me rather happy. The hexes will be easy to avoid, and it will give the PvP hungry people a good chance to go out and practise without risking their reputation. It isn't quite battlegrounds, but it gives people something to do when the rest of the game is nice and quiet.
Laik wrote: Doesn't make any esthetic sense for me. I can't figure out if you're trolling or lack esthetic sense. It's absolutely sandbox because you are building your settlement's ability to support your character.
Can one company claim multiple towers, or does a settlement need to charter a company for each tower they wish to control?

@Laik
While I agree it's not an optimal 'finished settlement system' it's a close enough approximation for the political landscape to evolve and let us test out how the PVP windows and group combat works out. From a purely combat perspective, it's only slightly mechanically different from how the POIs are going to work. It's at least something to do besides all of us killing wolves and goblins or each other for lack of anything more meaningful to do. Not to mention they could add a bit more to this as they build toward the real settlement system.
