So now the problem is that the GM doesn't like the player's attitude?

Sounds like he is trying to tell the player how to play their character. Just let it go, dude. This is a high fantasy world where wizards create alternate realities, dragons weighing thousands of pounds fly, and...yes...barbarians know they can wade through lava with impunity.

Don't get mad at the player because he is playing Pathfinder when you want to be playing GURPS.

If we go back to the lava lake or pool, if it is an environmental hazard that separates the Barbarian from a quest item that completes a story arc.
As a gm I am going to prepare for different ways to get across including sucking up the damage to across.

Personally I like the image of a hero going through hell itself complete his or her goals. That's just me and your mileage may vary.

Mage game I'm in, one of the first things we did was go into Hell.

Mostly because we couldn't figure out why there was a portal to the underworld in the middle of a public park and had no idea how to close it. So someone had the bright idea to jump in.

We got nothing done and lost about a week.
