Techniques to return from death or avoid it.

Rules Questions

Hey!

I'm one of 2 DM's for a campaign with 5 players. It's a very brutal campaign, and we show our rolls. Especially when a character's life is on the line.

I want the shops, NPC's and dungeons to occasionally offer up some artefact, spell or means to cheat death should it occur. These are what I know of:

1) Resurrection spell via item, scroll or spell.

2) A handwritten adventure, where the party goes to hell/heaven to get them back.

3) Becoming a Lich/Horcux. Restricted to evil players.

4) House rules, like using Soul Shifting.

What else exists in the rules to cheat death?

Silver Crusade

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The Clone spell, its expensive and requires upkeep though.

Lantern Lodge

APG - Hero Point system.

Various class archetypes - a druid that autoressurects 1 day later at level 5 for example. There is a shenanigans item that I will look up shortly.

Contingency spell set to teleport the character away when in danger. Requires fine tuning triggering condition.

Tenacious Survivor.

Grand Lodge

Breath of Life spell, and first aid gloves.

"Determination" armor ability. A flat 30k cost to have a Breath of Life spell once per day auto activate if you fall below 0 HP.

I also found "reincarnate", that would also allow for an interesting racial and or gender change.

There is also wish:

And then miracle

Contingency and teleport is a good combo. I'll advise the party soon, to start setting up ways of surviving death.

Well, perhaps this wont save you from death, but I see Aegis of Recovery as a cheap way to improve your chances at low levels. If you can cast some kind of evasion spell or similar, maybe its worth to take one of this.

You could always use binding (minimus containment) to stop your aging process and a combination of magic jar and Osirian spirit jars to "body hop" for all of eternity.

Something like my character, Hama, perhaps?

Alternatively, the entire party can benefit from scrolls of astral projection or lesser astral projection--allowing them to adventure with impunity as though they had save points.

Barring iGithyanki or anything else that can chomp through a silver cord that is.

What established monsters in Pathfinder can do that?

Silver Crusade

None so far!

I think you need to go either 3rd party, or make your own. I was pretty sure an astral dreadnought style thing was floating around the bestiary 4, but I might've confused it with the tome of horrors.

Sczarni

3rd tier Mythic with Mirror Dodge... lolz.

Also, 2 Hero points will allow a PC to cheat death.

oh my wow, i did not realize they never ported over something that can cut a cord?!?! I will look into astral adventuring right now

Silver Crusade

I still need to check Bestiary 4 again, but I don't think anything in existing bestiaries expressly indicates that ability.

Not surprising, since in D&D only Githyanki, Githzerai, and Astral Dreadnoughts could do it.

as soon as we touched the astral plane in 3.5 my DM started rolling weighted astral encounter percentiles...

Astral Projection while sitting in a private demi-plane. Nothing published in Pathfinder can kill you and only a few effects (Trap the Soul) can capture you.

Creative answer. I'll file this one away in the folder marked "End Boss"
