In the end, by adopting a more defensive formation, they pretty much invited Netherlands to attack. Not a wise choice IMO.

It's not just your opinion. It's your brilliant two-sentence epitaph for El Tri.

Oh, there is no such thing as "European papers protecting an European referee". Here on Europe (Spain for sure, and for what I now, rest of Europe too) we love to attack our referees.

the rivaleries in european soccer are fierce,

the German Tabloits would use any chance to bash an English Referee and vise versa

What happened to Mexico is not so strange; something similar happened to Athletico de Madrid on the Champions League final. The other team even the match near the final and it's over. A pity, really. Every team that plays against Real Madrid should win. And Athletico was a great team.

I have no issue with it when it's not handed to the other side, as it was in this case. That penalty was a joke.

No TV where I am, I only have read the match resume, so I can't talk about the penalty.

that sould not have been a penalty, Robben used a small touch to dive

It was a total rookie mistake. You don't touch a guy in the penalty area, no matter how lightly.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Really... FIFA should do something with all that simulation. That is soccer/football, not theater.

If you're referring to the referee's call, you're time on target.

¡Vamos Costa Rica!

Go one better than when Celso Borges's dad played.

¡Yes!

I realize you're being intentionally obtuse, but I'm not. I'm referring to the defence. That would have given a penalty kick nine timed out of ten.

It was a sh!++y call.

Is this still going on? How long does it take to skip to the penalty kicks?

ow ow ow ow ow they kick hard ow ow ow ow ow ow ow

I think it's sad to see anyone being dismissive of someone else's opinion. Especially a rather mild opinion about something pretty unimportant.

I much prefer it when people can respectfully disagree.

Honestly, I think Robben got the penalty from accumulated pressure on the ref. Robben went down in the penalty area about a dozen times in the match. I think you could go back through the tapes and give three or four of them as penalties.

At the end, the ref might have felt: "well, I've given the defenders the benefit of the doubt several times when I wasn't sure. So, this time, I'll give the attacker the benefit of the doubt." If refs could refer to video evidence for every offence in the box then we would probably have had the same result but with goals scored at different times.

Frankly, after the Mexicans sat back that game was all Netherlands and they deserved the win. Looking at the whole game, Netherlands were the better side. I am glad they won.

Uh ... it's not remotely disrespectful to reject someone's opinion. I didn't disparage it. I noted it, and rejected it as something with which I disagree.

Read what I say, not what you think I might mean by it. Thank you.

And I wasn't the one who employed the phrase "intentionally obtuse," now was I?

True ... but until Mexico did just that, they outplayed the Dutch.

Too bad they didn't realize it's a 90 rather than 50 minute game.

I hope it becomes a thing with Mexico's youth, that they start videoing themselves "Robbening", like U.S. youth were doing LeBroning. LOL

Shadow Lodge

Univision has quite a few memes for it here.

For some reason I like the high jump one the most.

Never mind the diving - France-Nigeria and Germany-Algeria were really good games. Definitely looking forward to the France vs. Germany quarter now.

Great performance from Algeria as well, and if it hadn't been for Neuer the Germans might have been very sorry for not managing to score during regular time.

Yep, that was a superb performance by Algeria and Germany. And either would've been interesting against France.

Wow great game. Go Germany!

PS: Algeria has an amazing goalie

Uh, okay. Good luck with that.

Or, 'goal keeper' as it's called in soccer :)

Depends where you're from (in England it can be goalie).

In football, it wouldn't be incorrect to shorten 'goalkeeper' to either 'keeper' or 'goalie' depending on where you're from. I've seen either used with more frequency than the full 'goalkeeper'.

Goalie sounds better than goal keeper.
I honestly didn't know there was any controversy over the name?

Liberty's Edge

Normally it's referred to as the keeper.

Seriously, I know it gets called various things - I was mostly just joking with you :)

"Normally"? Depends on what one considers "normal".

The same as ever; different places, different names, even on the same language. Great match yesterday between Germany and Algeria. Both Keeper-goalie where great. Neuer was Germany savior. Brasil - Colombia and France- Germany should be great matches. And Costa Rica... normally Holland should win without problems, but with that Costa Rica, who knows.

Aranna wrote:

In German we call them Torwart thats Goalwarden or Tormann thats Goalman, an oldfashioned name would be Torwächter thats Goalwatchman

and without our Tormann we would be dead now, there is much anger and frustration about Löws tactical decissions and line up decissions
Löws popularity is on an all time low ( and it already was extremly low before the world cup)
the only way he will not be greeted with rotten tomatos, torches and pitchforks on his return would be by winning the cup

Shadow Lodge

Back when I first started playing I think we just referred to the goalie as the slow kid.

Sovereign Court

With me, kids talk about the 'goalie' but adults prefer the term 'keeper'.

I don't know why, I guess and informal short form is preferred by everyone but adults might find the 'ie' ending a bit juvenile?

As a rugby fan, I am used to every position having at least three names that are in common use i.e. scrum-half, half-back and 'the 9' (rugby has positional numbers, rather than squad numbers)...

You can guess how incredibly have where we here on Spain with Vicente del Bosque after our "amazing" World Cup. XD

Nearly all 1/8 have been very even. Everything can happen on the lasts matches.

Edit: here on Spain is nearly always "portero" for the goalkeeper, but sometimes you hear some "guardameta" that sounds much more formal.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Belgium v USA is way more interesting for me because of my fellow paizonauts.

I actually had a conversation today which went something like this:

"I'm supporting Belgium because they have superior chocolate."
"And beer!"
"But they don't have cowboys."
"No, no cowboys."
"USA then..."

That is awesome!

Dark Archive

As my neighborhood chocoholic I have to cheer for Belgium. And since the USA is good at everything else, I would like them to leave soccer for the rest of the world.

Americans are crap at Rugby, "socialism", and Australian accents.

Also Belgians not only are good at chocolate and beer but waffles as well.

That Us Goalkeeper is doing an Incredible performance. The US would be losing like 5-0 without him.

Go go Tim Howard!

Liberty's Edge

Tell me again why its so amazing to watch people kick a ball into a hole 8 feet by 24 feet?

INcredible match the Us-belgium.

Was a bit crazy. The US had the prefect opportunity to end it as it was approaching the 90 minute mark, if they didn't screw that up it would be the US advancing. And the whole US team owes a huge dept to Tim Howard for keeping them in the game as long as they did.

Why do some people like hitting tiny balls with crooked sticks?

Well looks like I'm done. Call me again in 4 years and I'll start caring about soccer (football) again then. Take care all.

Grand Lodge

Done for four years. Hope Tim Howard is still playing then. What a goat rope....

Fair weather and all that...

Pick a second team, Germany is doing very well for me.

Rugby is my favourite, Australian Rules football my second and while soccer ranks below American football in interest for me - I do "get into" the world cup fever.

Why I love Rugby.

Why I like Aussie Rules.

Grand Lodge

Hmm, no, not a fair weather fan. Just done being hyped up for the Cup. I don't watch professional rugby, though I am a rugger.
