Oh, there is no such thing as "European papers protecting an European referee". Here on Europe (Spain for sure, and for what I now, rest of Europe too) we love to attack our referees.
the rivaleries in european soccer are fierce,
the German Tabloits would use any chance to bash an English Referee and vise versa

It was a sh!++y call.
I think it's sad to see anyone being dismissive of someone else's opinion. Especially a rather mild opinion about something pretty unimportant.
I much prefer it when people can respectfully disagree.

Honestly, I think Robben got the penalty from accumulated pressure on the ref. Robben went down in the penalty area about a dozen times in the match. I think you could go back through the tapes and give three or four of them as penalties.
At the end, the ref might have felt: "well, I've given the defenders the benefit of the doubt several times when I wasn't sure. So, this time, I'll give the attacker the benefit of the doubt." If refs could refer to video evidence for every offence in the box then we would probably have had the same result but with goals scored at different times.
Frankly, after the Mexicans sat back that game was all Netherlands and they deserved the win. Looking at the whole game, Netherlands were the better side. I am glad they won.

Uh ... it's not remotely disrespectful to reject someone's opinion. I didn't disparage it. I noted it, and rejected it as something with which I disagree.
Read what I say, not what you think I might mean by it. Thank you.
And I wasn't the one who employed the phrase "intentionally obtuse," now was I?

True ... but until Mexico did just that, they outplayed the Dutch.
Too bad they didn't realize it's a 90 rather than 50 minute game.

Univision has quite a few memes for it here.
For some reason I like the high jump one the most.

Never mind the diving - France-Nigeria and Germany-Algeria were really good games. Definitely looking forward to the France vs. Germany quarter now.
Great performance from Algeria as well, and if it hadn't been for Neuer the Germans might have been very sorry for not managing to score during regular time.

In football, it wouldn't be incorrect to shorten 'goalkeeper' to either 'keeper' or 'goalie' depending on where you're from. I've seen either used with more frequency than the full 'goalkeeper'.

The same as ever; different places, different names, even on the same language. Great match yesterday between Germany and Algeria. Both Keeper-goalie where great. Neuer was Germany savior. Brasil - Colombia and France- Germany should be great matches. And Costa Rica... normally Holland should win without problems, but with that Costa Rica, who knows.

and without our Tormann we would be dead now, there is much anger and frustration about Löws tactical decissions and line up decissions
Löws popularity is on an all time low ( and it already was extremly low before the world cup)
the only way he will not be greeted with rotten tomatos, torches and pitchforks on his return would be by winning the cup

With me, kids talk about the 'goalie' but adults prefer the term 'keeper'.
I don't know why, I guess and informal short form is preferred by everyone but adults might find the 'ie' ending a bit juvenile?
As a rugby fan, I am used to every position having at least three names that are in common use i.e. scrum-half, half-back and 'the 9' (rugby has positional numbers, rather than squad numbers)...

You can guess how incredibly have where we here on Spain with Vicente del Bosque after our "amazing" World Cup. XD
Nearly all 1/8 have been very even. Everything can happen on the lasts matches.
Edit: here on Spain is nearly always "portero" for the goalkeeper, but sometimes you hear some "guardameta" that sounds much more formal.

As my neighborhood chocoholic I have to cheer for Belgium. And since the USA is good at everything else, I would like them to leave soccer for the rest of the world.
Americans are crap at Rugby, "socialism", and Australian accents.
Also Belgians not only are good at chocolate and beer but waffles as well.

And they invented French fries too!
