(PFS) Wizard into Loremaster

Advice

Silver Crusade

Starting a new character...
Human (from Nex) Wizard 7, then Loremaster
Divination School, opposed Evocation and Necromancy
Traits: Clever Wordplay, Observant

1.Toughness, Skill Focus (Arcana), Spell Focus (??)
3. ??
5. Meta feat and Bonus Meta feat
7. Meta feat

Backstory: He's a book-snob, speaks tons of languages, got forced into joining Society (don't worry, I will actually be helpful in scenarios). I would prefer not to summon things. I've been a druid, and I've seen game time bogged down by summoning. Not my style.

2 Questions:
What should my Spell Focus be?
What should my 3rd level feat be?

I own Core, APG, UC, UM, ISWG, Inner Sea Gods, Inner Sea Magic.

Silver Crusade

Duh, Cosmopolitan for 3rd level feat.

Spell Focus?

For Spell focus you have opposed Evocation and necromancy...so not those...This leaves: Enchantment, Transmutation, Conjuration, Abjuration, and Illusion.

So this leaves:

Enchantment, Transmutation, Abjuration, and Illusion.

What is your Style? Enchantment would be strong option in PFS as would Transmutation. Illusion magic is Iffy because it takes A LOT of creative thinking, role play, spell combos, and a good DM to make it work like it should. Abjuration isn't bad if you want to be a Dispel Master...Haven't seen one in a long time. Typically because Dispel/protection mages are not typically thought of and typically its better to be the offensive mage and not the guy playing Defense against spells.

Now when it comes to loremaster you need skill focus, and 3 either spell focus or meta-magics according to the PFS rules on Loremaster. One of my questions has always been does that include Greater Spell Focus?

Silver Crusade

First Wizard ever...really. Usually my spell-casters are Jedi. I have a level 8 druid in PFS, but no meta's with him.

Fruian, I actually think dispelling would be up this PC's alley. I will enter "book snob" mode and learn all that I can!! Thanks for the hint.

Quick question...
Can I leave my spell slot open in my arcane bond, then spend the 15 minutes to prepare that during a scenario? Or is the 15 minute rule only for "my" spells?

I always roll with a Improved Familiar and UMD for the extra Action economy that a wand provides.

There is a Arcane discovery you can pick called Fast study that shortens your daily prep time to 15 minutes total and 1 minute to write in a spell. Here is the Link:

Fast Study

You have the UM so you can use it if you wanted too.

The thing about Abjuration is you typically want to Increase the Caster Level and not the DC. So spell focus is typically bad in Abjuration. Because most Abjuration spells do not come with DCs. But this does not at all mean you can not take spell focus in other types of Magic. I will be honest the 3 beat are going to be: Enchantment, Transmutation, and Conjuration. Since none of them are your opposed School. You can use Conjuration without summoning...Black Tentacles for example, Creat Pit, Grease are all non summons but has Save DCs.

Now a cool Abjuration trick I like is writing a explosive Runes on a Scroll and telling a bad guy that I have a Summon's letter/warrant for arrest/personal message I am here to deliver....wait till they open it and get there face half melted off.

Liberty's Edge

Can't search for them here. There is a trait (or was it a feat) to make UMD use the int modifier instead of the cha modifier. So your snob can dump cha and still use that skill really well. In PFS, UMD is probably my favorite skill.

I've considered but haven't seen a dispeller/counter speller yet, but I think it could be good. Usually the enemy high level caster is all alone or nearly so. Shut his magic down and dispel his buffs. What's left is essentially no threat.

However, you need to decide what your role/contribution will be if there is no enemy caster. When the feral advanced dire boar charges the group, what do you do?

Silver Crusade

Make my knowledge check, and then some appropriate battlefield control spell. **sighs** Must I do everything for this group??

Silver Crusade

I don't want to take a familiar, but its seeming like I have to in order to have an optimized build.

Liberty's Edge

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Not true. Probably 2/3 of the people at my local prefer the bonded item due to the cheap magic item and "that perfect spell that you wish you had prepared"
