Race differences

When it comes to picking a race, is there a practical consideration to the choice or is it just aesthetics? Further, are there race specific goods or armor? I don't really RP so the race isn't a concern there for me.

Also, when can we reserve our character names?

I've searched here and the blogs, but I can't find an answer. Im sure this must be out there somewhere. Thanks for any answers :)

There have been past mentions of racial differences (e.g. Dwarves possibly running slower but being better at carrying heavy loads), but I don't recall any detailed information. I think it is safe to say that there will be differences, but they may develop over time. For example, movement speed will probably be fixed at the start of EE.

Ryan says prior to EE, which is targeted for July.

I dug up a few quotes and it seems to boil down to racial modifiers for attribute scores that then change some small difference in different skills... no idea if these were drawing board or design spec:-

For eg speed and encumbrance and dwarves was mentioned (wip):-

We are looking at doing modifications to speed based on race, encumbrance, and armor, with dwarves moving slower but getting reduced effects for wearing armor and encumbrance (how reduced we won't know until we get in and start tweaking). We want people in plate mail to be slow moving tanks, not sprinting speed machines zipping across the battle field. That is the job of someone in leather or studded leather.

On Feats and skill bonuses:-

Officially, a "Feat" is any character improvement you can purchase with XP. Base Attack Bonus upgrades are Feats. Save improvements are Feats. Proficiencies are Feats. Skill ranks are Feats. Combat Feats are Feats... yeah, that last part makes it a little confusing, especially since sometimes when we say "Feats" we really mean "Combat Feats" (i.e., the things you actually have to slot to get them to do anything). We're looking into it.

Skill Ranks run 1-20, and you buy them in order. Your Skill Total (sometimes referred to as Skill Bonus) for a skill is equal to Ranks x 10 + Modifiers (e.g., from Race) and caps at 300. [Cont'd...]

On Ability scores that affect Feats:-

Ability Scores are numbers that start at 10 (unless modified by race choice) and increase gradually as you purchase Feats. Many Feats include a prereq of a minimum Ability Score of a certain type to purchase them. [Cont'd...]

Mentioning Skills:-

Skills only go up to 200 from pure ranks; you have to get the last 100 points from slotted passive feats, racial bonuses, magic items, and buffs. [Cont'd...]

Tbh a lot of that stuff I'm not familiar with Skills, Feats, Ability Scores, but you can see there are numerous modifiers of which "Racial bonus/modifier" is a category across a wide range of the above.

Devs may have altered the above considerably or not, idk. Have to hear from a dev.

Thanks for the answers, I am a little surprised it is not already in the design but I hope/assume the EE races will be more documented at release?

I want to play an ACE character with a little cleric mixed in as time allows, so all of my main roles should be available at the start of EE however limited in functionality. So my main character starts day 1, just wondered what race has to do with ACE stats.

Like would a dwarf be better at mining, a human at farming, an elf at herbalism... boy that would be tough for the micromanaging resource collectors.

Yeah I'd like some clarity on this. I don't even know which race to pick, let along which settlement on the 'Land Rush!'.

Need info to make decisions so waiting until then myself.

Yeah, I agree it is remarkably hard to make an informed decision on settlement choices despite what seems to be a sea of knowledge. What we've got is a lot of recruitment posts, but no way to evaluate the overall situation.

For what it is worth, I joined TEO last week and am very happy with it. I assumed the largest guilds will have the best advantage when it comes to land and resources, as well as a lot of diversification potential when it comes to roles.

Let's hope when the new Goblinworks forums open up they'll let us have better ways to sort information as well as send PMs.

PM's are available on this platform. I'll send one. It should cause the envelope to the right of your username (in the very top line) to develop a number after it.
