Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Here's the tought. All18 stats, lv 5 toon and 2 x wealth. You will be defending against hordes of humanoids a small town. So city setting many oppenent often in row.

What character class, 2 or 3 key gear, spell or feat u want to rely on?

I'd make a psichic warrior whit beefy armor and magic greatsword. I just like the sound of blood spilled at the tip of a huge sword and love the psionics since adnd (^_^)

What about you?

...Toon? I've been seeing this a lot. When did tabletop gamers start using this term? It doesn't really fit unless you're playing BESM or something.

Anyway, with stats like that, I'd ask for a reroll. Sounds painfully boring.

The last year or so I hear this all the time, mostly from younger players.

Forgive my ignorance, but what does this mean? I mean I know it's a reference to their pc, I just don't get it.

I'm a younger player and this has confused me as well. A bit of research has revealed that it is short for "cartoon".

...Not that that makes things clearer at all.

Anyways on topic: I don't know much about Psionics but haven't yet seen a martial character who can't do well with Greatsword + Power Attack.

Wizard. Spend some of the bonus wealth on wands of Fireball, Wall of Fire, and summon monster. And on hiring some soldiers.

Toon is shorthand for a character in an MMORPG. It's been in use since the early days of World of Warcraft which had cartoonish graphics.

Toon and goon has been used since the early 90s and it does refer to pc.

Is that right? In what game? I never heard it before playing WoW, even in earlier games like Ultima Online and Asheron's Call. And most certainly never in any tabletop game.

There was an rpg called Toon that came out in the mid 80s but its really the ONLY use of that word for rpgs before the wow mmorpg era. Its an incredibly stupid expression by wow kids like we're playing looney tunes and not a fantasy rpg..the only time id use the word toon is for the atrocity that paizo turned the goblin into. Did a lot of other good artwork and concepts but that one was NOT it

I've been playing tabletop rpgs since 94 and I never heard the word used in reference to an rpg until roughly a year ago.

Get off my lawn!!

This is basically my thought as well.

I would go monk or some Gish thing, or one of those really rediculously multitasks things. You can do it really well with those stats.

@Snow_Tiger i so like ur avatar.

Toon story as i grew whit it: we used to make our own rpg system based on dragon quest 1 and game alike. We draw most of our heros gear vilain and ect. It just went on as the year passed. It might be only a local expression.

As for GOON : lawful stupid, and such pc. Come from " goof off" in my locale.

In my day, we walked up hill both ways carrying 100 lbs of dice and we never used a fandangled word like "toon" to describe our characters! Gamers today, why, it's a sad state of affairs, a sad state indeed!
Good Day to you sir, I say, G'day!

Wasn't "Toon" used in the film Roger Rabbit?

Scarab Sages

I admit I picked up using toon when I was playing City of Heroes, but I never parsed it over to P&P gaming. I've been playing RPGs far longer than MMOs, and it never felt right to apply a MMO term to a face to face game.

Although I have to say I really miss CoH.

Good point. Whatever class you choose, under no circumstance should you dip.

I have to say: I really did walk up the hill both ways in the snow, when I was a kid.

(See, the bus picked you up at the top of the hill, and dropped you off at the bottom of the hill, and we lived only 400 miles south of the Arctic Circle...)

On-topic: level 5 double wealth all-18s?

Depends on what I wanted to do.

If I wanted to maximize my power, I'd probably choose to be a human crafting specialist (probably wizard, probably putting most everything into crafting/spellcraft, probably human with my +2 into INT), and use my 21,000 gold to craft to my heart's content until I could make reality weep at the mere mention of my name. Preferably in a demiplane with the time trait that lets me do lots of stuff in short order, but I'm not entirely sure if that's possible without doing research and, right now, meh.

Otherwise, I might try out some sort of assassin-like stealth specialist (I actually would have the stats to survive!), a more esoteric or unusually expensive class (such as Gunslinger), or, perhaps, something more off-the-wall, such as a "Perfect" (early entry) Mystic Theurge (sorcerer/oracle).

Negative Channeling Cleric? Or...a paladin of ridiculously high perfect saves forever and ever?

I'd just get kinda bored after a few rounds of being perfect.

Also..

I disagree. Paizo's goblin design is neat-o.

Well, based off the OP's wording I assume this is some kind of Zombie Apocalypse game, except with humanoids. That being said I'm guessing this is some kind of one off fight to the death type things? As it doesn't say differently I'm assuming for this exercise your defending the town alone. So damage mitigation and insane saves seem a must. Remember a comparable wizard (level 5) can throw long range spells at 600 feet away, which I think is very important to note for this situation.

So, I'd build for survival. Its only a small town, so it may or may not have a wall, but I would hope it does. Either way my builds would be:

My initial idea is a Fighter (Armormaster) with Adamantine Plate. That will have pretty poor saves though and eats up a good chunk of your wealth. Assuming you knew ahead of time there were no casters it may be solid, but its just too unreliable in the long run to survive a horde. Have to scrap that.

Next would be a Summoner. Your Eidiolon can fight for a good long while before he finally kicks the buckets. You have a solid (albeit small) spell list and have a large number of allies to call on once the eidilon does kick the bucket. I'm thinking a wand of invisibility + a wand or 2 of Lesser Rejuvenate Eidilon should get you through a big chunk of the battle. You can always unsummon the Eidiolon as well, and call him back if you get a respite. He may have some issues in the save department though and a few failed will may still ruin your entire day. Still, this guy is probably my front runner on likely to survive.

For the most single character survivability in this particular situation I'm looking at a Paladin (Divine Hunter) 2/Zen Archer 3. Your going to have really solid saves across the board, and no real shortage of resources, as most your stuff is free. Paladins have access to a few useful spells for wands(and you can UMD some long term buffs), and you have multiple attacks per round, and can take out the attackers at (great) range before they close in. With some luck they often don't get close enough to attack you, and unless their wizards throwing around long range spells, you should have a better chance of taking them out if they do attack you at range. The only piece of equipment I can think of Off hand is going to be a +1 distance longbow, just in case you do have wizards throwing stuff at 600+ feet away.
