Help with a new class please

Homebrew and House Rules

I am working on a new base class "Unnamed as of right now" The class will focus on being a sort of lycanthrop.

I am looking at modifying the basic Barbarian class build to accommodate my new class and wanted some advice.

I want to add basically Flurry of blows and the monks unarmed damage to Rage, I am going to use this to represent the classes natural attacks they gain when they "Shift" the class will not follow the normal rules for natural attacks so do not worry about "Primary or Secondary" rules.

How would you modify rage to accommodate these additions to the Rage class feature?

One way I am thinking of modifying it is by making it so when you "Shift" you lose the ability to use weapons, just a thought

Look at some of the rage powers that grant natural attacks,

Hahahahahaha. Ahem. I am currently designing a Alternate Barbarian/Hybrid Barbarian.Monk that gives the Barbarian a flurry of blows-esque ability... I love parallel design*.

Happily, my concept is not lycanthropic, the flurry replaces rage, it doesn't use natural weapons and gets the flurry in light armor. Phew, that was close...

* Actually, no I don't. It frustrates me. I'm a sad, sad, human being.

As for ideas for your Shifter class - I would agree with CIaran on the natural attack rage powers, and any monster feats/universal monster abilities that complement you r concept.

Obviously you'll need to swap something out of the core barbarian suite, or Rage itself to accommodate the flurry. Not having any ideas on what though, apart from removing those things that may not be thematic. All I can see is trap sense...

my goal is to add flurry and the unarmed damage to Rage with as little modifications to The Rage class feature as possible.

I recognize that there are rage powers that work for natural attacks but I am trying to do something different then just use the powers.

One thing I am thinking of doing is making it so "Rage" takes a move action to activate and make it so you cant use weapons when you "Rage"

This is what I have so far

Fury: +2 str or +2 dex, +2 con, Gain flurry of blows with Monk progression unarmed damage as natural attacks, can count as any possible natural attack you choose at character creation. loose ability to use weapons.

Takes a move action to activate, can be used a number of rounds equal to 4+con mod +2 per level after 1st. once rage ends character is fatigued for twice as many rounds as they were in Fury.

Have you looked at the wolf shifter alt-barbarian from Wayfinder #5 (free!) for ideas?

Thanks, that will help a lot for some ideas.

one thing I am stuck on is I do not want my class to follow the normal natural weapon rules. I find them unsuited for actual PC's, I dont want their damage potential to lack compared to someone using weapons.

I also forgot to add, loses the ability to use Int and Cha based skills while "Furying".

What I would do is get rid of trap sense, uncanny dodge/improved uncanny dodge, and the standard DR. Have them gain natural attacks when they shift and make all the natural attacks primary. As for losing the ability to use weapons, just make them only proficient with simple weapons and natural attacks or possibly a very limited list of weapons such as the druids list or the wizards. As they level make the natural attacks deal more damage, count as magical at a certain level (like a Monks unarmed strike), etc.

If you want to make their natural attacks even more appealing make the equivalent of rage powers and let the natural attacks take on properties similar to weapons such as corrosive or icy. Maybe even make the shift a little more like an eidolon so that no one is the same when they shift. Give them a pool of evolution points to spend in various things. And then let them shift into a four armed beast of some kind with a bunch of claws. Or perhaps a snapping turtle man with a bite and a swallow whole ability.
