Silence question?

Rules Questions

Hi. I'm new here and new to Pathfinder, so apologies for any newbie type question but after googling and reading the core book I couldn't find an answer so here goes...

I'm playing a (battle)cleric in our campaign. If I cast the spell "Silence" successfully on an opposing caster, can I end it when its not my turn (possibly as a free action since you can speak off turn?) so that one of my caster allies can use a spell on the same target on their turn?

Thanks.

You can dismiss a spell that has (D) after the duration; Silence qualifies.

Dismissing a spell, however, is a standard action.

Standard actions must be taken on your turn (though you might want to look at "delay" and "ready an action" in the Combat rules).

Problem here:

(D) Dismissible: If the duration line ends with “(D),” you can dismiss the spell at will. You must be within range of the spell's effect and must speak words of dismissal, which are usually a modified form of the spell's verbal component. If the spell has no verbal component, you can dismiss the effect with a gesture. Dismissing a spell is a standard action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity.

A spell that depends on concentration is dismissible by its very nature, and dismissing it does not take an action, since all you have to do to end the spell is to stop concentrating on your turn.

If you're in the area of your silent spell, you're kinda screwed on this one. But my advice is to set the spell on an object, so you can throw it away when you need to speak again.

Okay, thanks gang - appreciated. :)

What was throwing me off was the core rules book's description of concentration. I can see now though, that the spell entry has to have a duration of "concentration" for it to apply.

Thanks again.

Also, strategy-wise, never cast silence on an unwilling opponent, because then they get a save. Instead. cast it on some nearby object or point in space, or on your melee character who will be getting all up in the caster's face.

On a related note ... can you create a potion of Dispel Magic, so you can quaff it if someone does manage to cast Blindness / Deafness / Silence on you?

Dispel magic is a third level spell that targets a creature. That seems to be legal. You might want to get one at higher than minimum caster level if you can.
