Oh we were thinking of holding him for ransom, but then we figured they gave him to us so what could he be worth? We decided to just SAD him and let him go. ;-)

The settlement Aragon will be sponsoring a "Meet and Greet" on Friday, June 6 at 9:00 PM Eastern.

The TS server that will be used: PFOFan TS

* All are welcome

* No Politics, other than Ambassador appointments / exchange.

* No Recruitment

* No Personal Attacks

Aragon Citizens and UNC members will then break away around 10:30ish for our own meeting (private server).

He was unfortunate enough to talk to me first. He came in as we were talking with some new members to the game. So we called him a spy and gagged him. Once we had the new members setup in serious torture mode, we dragged him down to another channel and began to beat him into submission.

LOL

We had a good but short talk. He jumped on right as I was getting ready for bed. We yapped for about 15 minutes or so (I think, was tired).

So, I feel I should add a personal touch this thread. Many people see the member's of Aragon (namely the UNC members) as these vicious, angry people who want nothing more than to argue or kill. But that's not the case.

So, 6 months back I took a leave from... pretty much everything. Personal junk going on. I parted with barely an explanation, and didn't show my face for quite a while. After this time, I came back not knowing what to expect. I figured maybe everyone would wonder who I was, and wondered if I would even be welcomed back after such a long absence with no updates during that time.

Turns out, I didn't have a single thing to worry about. I was welcomed back with open arms. Not a single awkward moment or complaint about my leave. Just a good group of people asking me how I was doing. And then things continued on as if I hadn't ever left. There was no need to really welcome me back, because I was always welcomed. No questions asked. Once these guys take you into their community, you are a PART of them. I don't think there's been a single night since I've gotten back into the swing of things where I haven't spoken to at least 2 or 3 of them on Teamspeak.

The people who make up Aragon are some of the best people I've gotten to know, and have created a fantastic community. Become a part of it with us. A part of this brotherhood.

WE have been pulling in many crafters over the last two days, which is excellent... Weapons of War and Poisons for those Special Occasions!!

You see, we are not just about killing people, as long as what you make is used to kill people. ;-)

The UnNamed Company will free you of the coin you can not hold for themselves.

The Vigilant will free the slaves of their bonds, and free the lands of those that would exploit them abusively.

The Exalted Bastards will free Aragon's enemies of their heads, without mercy and not until not until retribution has been met.

Grim Maw Clan will be Aragon's exclusive crafters, and they too are looking to fill their ranks.

Aragon is looking for individual citizens or whole companies looking to fill these roles, as well as the other support roles needed to build and maintain the center of Chaotic training in all of the River Kingdoms.

I don't know if anyone has noted the issue directly so forgive me as I've not found the answer among the search feature results.

Aragon is the name of a historical, and modern Spanish community (Which coincidentally has the same number of province divisions as UNC) that exists on any decent world map someone could find.

I believe the naming convention for Settlements precluded them from sharing the name of a real world place, RP-shattering names, or using anything in the line of copyrighted/trademarked material. Another way it was put was that if it was googled, and a result popped up that already has an established meaning and value (Especially considering Aragon is the proper noun name of what amounts to Union of multiple provinces) will also be denied.

I think this could lead to much confusion and headaches for your community should the name be swept out from under your feet after having already developed such a strong following and RP foundation under its current moniker.

Is your leadership aware of this apparent problem? Have you sought approval from GW of the given name?

Goblin Squad Member

If they wanted to, they could give Golgotha crap for their name choice as well: relevant link.

you should send your concern to this company as well.

I don't think Aragon would be a copyright issue. I would think it would be public domain.

A name referencing a dogmatic (Some might say fictional) place is in much safer territory than naming your Settlement "Dakota" or "Carolina" for example, which is what Aragon basically amounts to for Spaniards.

I don't personally have any issue with Aragon being the final name, stamped and approved, but I'm not sure GW would rule the decision as I would, especially considering the number of non US nationals that are participating.

I was simply curious if the concern had been raised by anyone yet, as it seems to fall closer to "unacceptable" than otherwise by my understanding of GW naming conventions.

1. Fictional...

2. Chosen because "ambushes and offensive operations" are what we do.

3. Not to be confused with any real world place with same or similar name.

4. It already was approved in the land rush screening

5. Place names can not be copyrighted

6. Many European surnames are place names (my wife's family are named after a town, a mountain, etc).

7. Aragon is not in any way RP-shattering, just as Brighthaven is not, nor Phaeros, Callambia nor Golgotha.

8. My Sister-in-Law's maiden name is actually Aragoni coincidently.

Very nice list of justifications, I also think a holistic approach that for important details of this matter, rather than poking holes in somethings logic doesn't mean you're able to "kill the problem" so to speak.

It's good to hear the name was approved on the LR screening, but I doubt they did much line by line vetting of Guild Descriptions yet, simply because of how often they are being updated, as a whole as well as individually. That's a TON of work, and GW is not a big company, in fact it's smaller than ANY of the Companies on the LR leaderboard, heh.

I don't think that the policy about naming it settlement is supposed to be a hard policy, otherwise most of the major settlement are already unacceptable.

I only brought this up because I heard a story on the radio on the way home from work this morning which mentioned unemployment rates in the country. I recognized the areas name (Aragon) spoken aloud and the first thing I thought was "UNC."

I also never said it should be renamed, only asked if you were aware of this possible corner-case problem.

How can I be more transparent here exactly? I have no stake in what Aragon is named whatsoever. Is simply posting in your forum topics considered trespassing?

Let me break it down for you, so UNC doesn't have to get involved and be painted as 'the bad guys' yet again. Read your post again. You address the issue. You then argue why it breaks a rule or intent from GW. You don't even address why it might be okay, which what I suggested could be one possible answer. Then you ask them if they've asked GW, assuming it's a problem as a forgone conclusion.

Goblin Squad Member

And I think tensions are little higher after the past couple of week's proceedings, so everyone is more sensitive to what they may think is muckraking and more apt to take the defensive. I'll be honest and say that was my thought when I read your posts, Carbon.

Based upon your clarification, it appears your post was sincere, so I apologize if I misread it and I hope you can understand why UNC make have read it the same way.

I asked out of curiosity, and a desire to participate as a member of this growing community, and I now regret even attempting civil discourse. I apologize if my posts seem... I don't even know... confrontational maybe, they weren't intended as such.

I see that the forums are far too heated at the moment to even entertain an innocent discussion without finger-pointing from occurring... which makes me quite sad.

In any case best of luck in the Land-Rush, may your Settlement prosper, and fulfill it's destiny as the bastion of Chaos it already has become.

I apologize for going on the offensive. I am also sorry for the confusion.

After the Golgotha assault and our CG company name coming into question, I figured this was just an attempt to passive aggressively attack aother non-RA group. It seems to be going around.

Thank you for the well wishes.

And thank you Quietus and Lone-Wolf for clearing it up.

Settlement Name: Aragon
Settlement Philosophies: The River Freedoms
Government Type: Oligarchy (Council)
Alignment of Settlement Managers: CN
Alignment of Citizens: CG, CN, CE and N
Alignment of Visitors: ALL

Inspiring Concept:

Aragon: in United States Army training, a fictional opposing force "Aragon Liberation Front" is described by the US Army Ranger Handbook[2] as engaged in "ambushes" and "offensive operations". A placeholder entity for training exercises, the fictional Aragon appears to have no tie to various real places in Spain and elsewhere with the same or similar name.

What Aragon is meant to be:

This settlement is meant to be a place where you can exercise your freedoms, but not to the point of full blown anarchy. You can practice whatever arts you like, say whatever you like, buy and sell whatever you like (except for Slaves), plus dabble in or go all out in any of the vices you care to indulge yourself in.

The settlement’s governance is based on the River Freedoms. If you can adhere to them, you are welcomed as either a visitor, a citizen or charter company.

Focus of Services:

Aragon will be providing focused training in Chaos and Neutral based skills and feats, with lesser emphasis on skills based on Good, or Evil alignments. (with the exception of an Assassin's Faction Hall which will be a focus)

Aragon makes no difference between citizen or visitor in fees charged for skill training. However, training slots are prioritized towards citizens.

Aragon plans on providing a market to trade and facilities to craft, at the same or better capacity than any NPC settlement can provide.

Aragon plans on being open to all races, roles and alignments provided its visitors adhere to its few but severely punished laws.

Reputation:

It is the goal for the settlement leadership (managers) to have a high reputation.

The military of Aragon will be comprised of Fighters, Barbarians, The Clergy and Rangers. They will uphold high standards of reputation and function only within the confines of law enforcement, self defense, feuds and wars.

Assassins should have impeccable reputation, not allowing reputation to be a factor in granting them access anywhere, where they may be needed.

Merchants should have a high reputation.

Outlaws (Bandits) and Raiders (Barbarians) should maintain a moderate level of reputation and would be expected to show respect towards those they engage in combat with. They are expected to respect settlement standings placed on all parties, domestic or foreign.

Necromancers and other very twisted, individuals, will be accepted even if lower reputation, but they must have a certain flare in being so.

The settlement of Aragon is always in preparation for war. All citizens are expected to have basic combat skills (merchants and crafters included). Its military will drill, skirmish (feud) or wage war frequently. Its outlaws (Bandits) will be active in both bringing in money to fill our coffers and in honing their ambush and combat skills as well. Assassins and Bounty Hunters will be busy; honing and testing their talents often.

Proposed Laws of Aragon:

The River Freedoms are the basis of our laws. However, here are a few other considerations.

It will be legal to issue SADs within our lands. However, these stops are for the sole purpose of interdicting contraband (Slaves or other Banned Items). Liberated slaves will be “freed” (mechanically destroyed, unless another option is available).

Outside parties SADing within our lands are encouraged to “Have What You Hold”, so they should be prepared to defend themselves against other roving bands.

Raiding Outposts or POIs in our settlement will not be made illegal. It is the responsibility of the owners of those structures to "Have What They Hold", this includes settlement held structures.

Bounty Hunting will be made a crime within our territory. Feuding or War Parties of other settlements or companies will be marked as trespassers (both pursuer and refuge seeker) and will be attacked.

New Player Training:

Aragon is a center for training in the arts of: Small Gang PVP, Ambush, Outpost and POI Raiding, Defending POIs and Settlements, Caravan Raiding and Escort Duties.

Its settlement structures will be dedicated to training these, as well as Assassination. Religious structures that will be supported are: Besmara, Gorum and Callistria.

@ Carbon D. Metric

If you were in fact just raising a curiosity, then I hope you understand the context of which it was received. We are finally stepping out of a week's worth of heated argument where one member of RA demanded the removal of a settlement from the land rush on the basis of an ambiguous technicality.

I would not have been surprised for him to run in here and try to do the same.

Apologies if we jumped hard into defensive mode unnecessarily.

Sorry for the slow response here, everyone needs a bed-time, even if it is an unreasonably late one.

After rereading the posts I'm sure I could/should have worded more carefully, something I was struggling to do having pulled an overnighter the previous two days. It's also very understandable to worry about attacks coming from all angles given the turmoil the community has had of late.
