The Goblinworks.com and Paizo.com websites seem to be really screwed up

I don't know what is going on. Last night I went to the Goblinworks website and clicked the link to purchase the Goblin Squad Pioneer - Month Two package. This link sent me to Paizo.com where I purchased the package. Under my account at Paizo.com, I now have the package downloads. However, under my Goblinworks account, it says I have not yet enrolled as a Goblin Squad member, which was supposed to be part of the package. Further, the downloads only list 1 month of game time whereas the package was supposed to include 3 months.

Today, my friend purchased the same package from the Goblinworks website However, she says the link did not send her to Paizo.com to purchase the package and she has no downloads listed on her Paizo.com account. Under her Goblinworks account, in the same place where it says I am not yet enrolled as a Goblin Squad member, it says she is enrolled.

Can anyone please help us sort this out?

They are working on it right now. There are discussions in the threads: New website feedback and the newer posts (most recent pages of) Goblin Squad Store Soft Launch.

Edit: And Hello! Nice to see a new face. :)

He does! All of Pax would probably say so. ;)

Hi and welcome Redmond!

In your Paizo account, have you tried clicking on the kickstarter pledge and updated the information? That is where I could add my goblinworks username and password, which seemed to transfer the needed info.

Kickstarter is (still but not for much longer) tied to paizo accounts, whereas new GW store purchases are tied to goblinworks accounts.

Goblin Squad Member

Yeah... I'm just going to hold off on linking anything until the process is a little more stable.

Goblin Squad Member

Yeah, I'll wait a bit with the rest of my accounts.

Yea, I tried that a few times so far but it isn't transferring the info.

Im in the same boat as you are. However there are not too many of us that have purchased on pazio but are not in the kickstarter. I am not too worried about it, I have every confidance that our purchase will be honored.

My plan is to wait until later next week then ask customer service to manually transfer the info over. I read in one of the threads linked above that we may receive emails about them doing a manual port from one site to the other.

Honestly I'm pretty sure it's the fact that we don't capitalize the whole thing that has people addressing us by the guild tag.

Your all just one guy right?

On subject. My account linked just fine. I setup my account on the GW page, using the same info as here. Then I went to the kickstarter page here on the Paizo board and linked it. Worked perfectly.

Goblin Squad Member

Probably a big part of it. If you are new to this board, I am not so inclined to be bothered about it. I certainly wouldn't want anyone to be offended by the way that it gets pointed out. We need a little more humor about the place. :)

Exactly what I did, and the Paizo-side is still asking me to create a new GW account. Oh well, no huge rush to completion.

Hmmm, used the same email and everything?

Look at your GW account and see if it has you as an EE participant.

"not yet enrolled", so I'll wait for customer service. When Ryan's had a chance to dig through yesterday morning's email, he'll find my note there.

BTW, fascinating that the head honcho has the customer service addy drop into his box.

LOL, that is his job till everything gets rolling. After PFO takes off, he will not have time. (heh, he may not have time now)

As of today, there are 19 full time employees at Goblinworks. 18 of them are programmers, artists or game designers. That leaves one person to do everything else. (Plus Lisa, who is not a Goblinworks FTE but spends about half her day on Goblinworks stuff).

That person is me. :)

Good to hear that Goblinworks is still Lean and Mean. I hear team-bloat can be a killer. The implosion of Studio 38 from Curt Schilling was a nasty thing to witness.

Disclaimer: opinion of an utter bystander.

You must have taken my comment at the first kickstarter at heart(I am M.M.U.): Keep it lean ;)

Just kidding. Wow, it's been a long time! Kickstarter, good times.

38 Studio was a perfect example of the risk of Theme Park development. They convinced themselves they were ready to begin construction of the Theme Park, so they hired the staff you need to do that - lots of people have to make all the stuff in the various PvE experiences and you do it in parallel. Then they convinced themselves that the Theme Park was going to be ready on X date, so they had to have customer service, game masters, and other infrastructure teams filled and ready to go on that date - remember as a Theme Park they would be basing their projections on having a huge spike of activity at launch so they needed to front-load all that hiring.

Convincing themselves of those things also led to convincing themselves that they needed to staff up the marketing and communications team and begin executing on the marketing plan which means things like paying to build expensive trade show booths, signing contracts for exclusive site skinning, paying marketing agencies to create advertising campaigns, outsourcing work on flashy video trailers, etc.

Then they missed their release target. Then they ran out of money. End of story.

So not really a "mistake" per se in staffing up, but really in failing to accurately estimate when the project would monetize, and not having the ability to get more capital when they went long on schedule.

I think what we can all take from the lesson of Studio 38 is get a stage right to the cusp of completion and THEN think about hiring for the next stage.

Goblin Squad Member

Was really disappointed with what happened to Studio 38. I really enjoyed their Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning game.

Goblin Squad Member

Ah yes, I see that a Themepark follows a different timeline. Still, 400 full time employees at the end, that is just scary. If you are not Blizzard, that is. Boston Globe

I still have Kingdoms of Amalur somewhere, I liked it too, but got sidetracked by those pesky MMO's again and never finished it.

If the result of "Not every team completes their part of the game within the expected timeframe" is "The company goes belly-up", then there's probably room for improvement.

Make sure that your burn rate and cash reserves are sufficient to handle the delays that you anticipate, as well as additional delays equal to what a company with your experience would have but not anticipate, plus a margin for error.

CEO, Goblinworks

Well in a perfect world, that is what you would do. But in this world you sometimes have to make the choice to quit, and walk away from your sunk costs, or forge ahead and hope that you can arrange more capital as you need it. When you're world-famous and have a nearly unlimited ability to get people to take a meeting with you, and a region of the country that lionizes you like a god incarnate, it can be reasonable to assume that will work. Up until the day it doesn't.

Having spent my career in major corporations, it's frightening how difficult--read: seemingly impossible--many executives find this step.

Having spent a few hours at a roulette table once, I can certainly attest to the temptation to bet $100 on red immediately after losing $50 on red, "to get it back". Fortunately, I was very lucky that night and haven't felt the need to test my luck since :)
