We're Hiring a Community Manager

Pathfinder Online

CEO, Goblinworks

Normally I don't post job openings here on the forums because the positions we're seeking are technical in nature and we'd like applicants to find us via the filter of where we advertise (and you can always see the jobs we have open at this link!)

This particular job however is unique since it's all about interacting with our community so we wanted to make sure the community knew about it before we fill it.

Before you read on, I want to scope who we're looking for so you'll know if you have a chance at this job.

This is not a job for someone who has never worked in this kind of role before. This is not an entry level position.

This is not a job for someone who doesn't know a lot about MMOs and MMO social networks. You have to come to the table with a deep knowledge of these networks to be valuable to us.

This is a full-time, on-site job. You'll need to be here every day during business hours. The job cannot be done remotely.

We're not paying relocation expenses for this position. If you don't live near our offices in Redmond, Washington, and you want this position, you'll have to pay to relocate yourself.

We have candidates we have already interviewed that meet these qualifications. So this is not one of those times where someone can hope to get a chance at a position based on being charismatic and promising to work hard. We have to accelerate rapidly and we don't have time to train folks or help them gain the kind of knowledge we need - we are only interested in candidates that can hit the ground running.

Very Important

You will not get considered for this job unless you do the following, exactly:

Access this link.

Click the Apply for this Position button and follow the directions.

Inquiries sent via PM or email get sent to the bit bucket.

Here's the description:

We are beginning to form the Publishing team that will support our game as we begin live operations. This position is more than a forum moderator. We are hiring someone who can be given a minimum of direction and oversight, and can engage across a wide variety of tasks independently.

The position involves working with guilds and player groups to raise awareness about Pathfinder Online and a sales promotion related to the start of monetization of the game. It involves increasing the tempo of our social media communications with our fans and expanding the footprint of our awareness beyond the core Pathfinder community. It involves migrating our existing forum community from their original home on our parent company's website to a new venue being created exclusively for players. It involves creating and sustaining connections between our players and our development team - facilitating a true two-way communication.

Applicants must demonstrate:

  • Ability to operate without active supervision
  • Extremely strong written communication skills
  • A knowledge of the MMO community space - who the guilds are, who key thought leaders are, how to use access points like forums and social media to connect with the MMO social graph
  • Good selling skills - ability to close

Ideal candidates would have one or more:

  • Experience working for an MMO project that is in live operations
  • A background with guild/clan membership and active participation
  • A sales background
  • Skill with Photoshop, NLE video systems, Twitter, and Facebook

Perks:

  • Substantial stock options – we are a small studio and want to make sure everyone has a stake in the company
  • Commissions derived from sales
  • Medical, dental, eye, etc – of course

Compensation:

$40k/year + 10% commission on sales through the Goblin Squad Store for 90 days. After 90 days we will re-evaluate the compensation structure based on performance and other factors.

We are based in Redmond, just east of Seattle. Must be willing to relocate to the Seattle area. You must be able to legally work full time in the United States. Goblinworks is an equal-opportunity employer.

Exactly. If he can manage that many kids on a trip to D.C., he may be able to manage my TT group of 4 adults (loose term). I have given up.

I just want to reassure any applicant that we are the best-est community evar. We don't fight or argue or rage or go off topic. There's no need to check out the forums to verify that, either, because no one would lead you astray here. Honest. ;)

Best of luck!

Pick me for the spot!!! I have great interpersonal communication skills. I know how to talk to customers and make them feel welcome to the idea of spending all of their money.

Customer: Where can I find the new website?
PR_Xeen: What is wrong with you, Goblinworks.com, its staring you in the face.

Customer: How do I buy that new magical item from the cash shop?
PR_Xeen: Really? Give me your credit card info, Ill get it for you.

Customer: I have a problem with this guy in game, can you help me?
PR_Xeen: What? Did he kill you?

Heh, all kidding aside. I actually work with customers in my current career. Granted, I get paid a lot more LOL.

That looks like a nice compensation package for the industry, and the options are what you are really working for in this case...

I appreciate the vote of confidence, but I believe I'm rather seriously unqualified.

I gotta agree, that's a good vid. Really shines a light on the position of Community Manager.

I know Sanya Weathers is Community Manager at Undead Labs now, and formerly at Pitch Black, where iirc some of the Goblinworks staff were hired from? She might be a good contact to ask if she knows anyone? Just a suggestion of course following a trend of thought.

As someone that's been pretty interested in getting into the industry, I've noticed that entry level positions are really hard to come by.
The only places I've seen that consistently do so, are 3rd party QA testing companies, and internship offerings that either require an extensive portfolio, or an academic qualification.

The offer sounds nice, but I'l have to look somewhere else where I'm actually qualified.

In a genius timely twist this was posted a couple of minutes ago by the current Relic Entertainment community manager who is also a former Electronic Arts community manager:

Always liked watching the Extra Credits videos

which reminds me, i need to start catching up on them

If I wanted the position I'd let the company's HR staff determine my eligibility and not presume to do their job for them. The downside would be that I failed to heed the qualification admonition if I turned out to be unqualified, but the upside is that at least my interest is made known and HR had a chance to pick me up if the qualifications I do have were attractive enough.

As a dinosaur, now, I would only be interested in the content creation side of the business, and there are surely more than enough brilliant young content creators who really need a way to gain professional experience.

How goes the hiring process for this? I haven't seen anyone new in our community yet so I assume the position has yet to be filled or the new hire is waiting to make themselves known.

I did run it by a few actual Internet Relations Managers I happen to know, just to see if any were interested. The responses were uniformly negative. One response neatly captured the general tone, "Oh, goodness, I wouldn't touch this job with a fifty foot pole. Anyone who'd post a job like this doesn't understand what I do or why I do it."

Looking forward to meeting whoever does end up filling this role.

More than 50 applicants, interviewed 6 so far. We will fill it soon.

Goblin Squad Member

Good to hear. Transitioning to the GW forums when those are created will be a real trial by fire.

Goblin Squad Member

Excellent! Will miss the blunt one-liners though.

:D

Goblin Squad Member

Looks like other roles have been filled, see only CM and QA atm. That is good news if so.

Goblin Squad Member

I feel for the poor soul who ends up with the CM job.

Goblin Squad Member

CM is just takes a little bit of social engineering on the rest of the staff.

Goblin Squad Member

Herding cats I think is the correct comparison.
