Wizard Traits

Advice

I am working on making a Human Wizard, and I was looking through the traits in the Ultimate Campaign Guide. So many of the seem good! Anyone have some insight on which two are best? I am probably going to take Reactionary, because init. bonuses are always welcome.

I would consider something like:

Student of Philosophy - use Int for the influence element of diplomacy and the deceive element of bluff to become an extremely effective face character

Clever Wordplay - replace the stat used with a Cha based skill with Int, pick UMD to be able to easily use any magical items you find

Magical Lineage - redcue the total adjusted level of any one spell which you apply metamagic to by 1. Pick your favourite spell to use with Dazing, Persistent or Quicken. It wont do much immediately but is an exceptionally effective trait in the mid levels.

Wayang Spell Hunter - like Magical Lineage but only for a spell of level 3 or lower. Stacks with Magical Lineage.

Observant/Eyes and Ears of the City - get Perception as a trained skill, it is quite possibly the most important skill in the game and maxxing it out is never a bad idea.

Save Boosters - there are a couple which provide +1 Will or Reflex, they are not bad picks as both saves tend to relate to awful conditions you really want to avoid.

A lot of the magical traits' usefulness depend on the build, so post your ideas for that and you'll get more advice.

The build... Well, not really definitive, to be honest. He is third level at the moment, and I have gone with the Teleportation (conjuration)for school specialization. I am waffling on the familiar or the item bond. I like the Green Sting Scorpion familiar with the +4 to init, but the item bond with its "once per day cast any spell in your spell book" is pretty nice as well.

I have picked Spell Focus: conjuration, Improved Initiative, and Combat Casting for my feats, with Augmented Summoning to come at fifth level. Not absolutely sure what feats after that that will be taken. If I go bonded item, I will take an amulet, and pick up Create Wonderous Item. If I go familiar, then I will pick up Improved Familiar at 7th to get the Silvanshee Agathion.

Nothing is written in stone, here, as this is a back up character in case my Mad Pyromaniac dies.

Scarab Sages

I find Pragmatic Activator to be interesting for a wizard.

Other favorites are traits that grant perception or diplomacy as a class skill and traits that increase initiative.

Grand Lodge

If you stay out of Combat you wont need "combat" casting.

Greensting is awesome for the +4 but I recommend a Pterosaur, Rhamphorhynchus. You get +2 Initiative but he is a flyer that can deliver touch spells better then the Scorpion.

If your going for conjuration specialist I recommend the familiar and then Improved familiar at level 7 for a UMD user. You will be casting Summons and will want to give the Imp wands to increase your action economy.

Another notable Trait Is transmuter. Whenever you cast a spell from the transmutation school, its effects manifest at +1 caster level. Additionally, select one of the following transmutation spells: bear's endurance, bull's strength, cat's grace, eagle's splendor, fox's cunning, or owl's wisdom. Once per day when you cast that spell, its duration is doubled. A spell affected by this trait cannot be modified further by the Extend Spell metamagic feat or similar abilities.

I think initiative is important so keep the familiar, Improved Initiative and reactionary. Combat Casting should be dropped in favor of Augment Summoning now and Superior Summoning at 5th. There are many good options for a second trait. Magical Lineage is great if you mess around with metamagic. Hedge Magician is selling your trait for money later. Rich Parents is selling it for money now. Seeker/anything that adds Perception because it is the most used skill in the game. Bruising Intellect makes intimidate useful for a wizard.

Well. Thanks everyone for the ideas!

Fate's Favoured is also excellent as it boosts luck bonuses and if your DM allows custom magic items that would stack with resistance bonuses, etc boosting your saves (or Sacred Tattoo if you are a half orc).

If you are a Transmutation specialist too Transmuter nd Tenacious Transmutation offers a welcome boost to your spells at low levels.
