Themed Parties

Liberty's Edge 2/5 *

Last weekend I was in a game with 3 out of 4 of us being Paladins playing Haunting of Hinojai.

Sadly the 4th player was playing a Bard, but it did get me to thinking. Does anyone out there try to set up a theme table? Perhaps all Dwarves, All Bards etc

Silver Crusade 2/5

Around here, we have a group of players who run a table of Gorum worshippers. Super effective, and they try to convert everyone to Gorum who joins them at a convention. Got a chance to play with one of them, was quite memorable!

We tried to set up a high level table of anti-mammal Nagaji, but scheduling didn't work out =(

Liberty's Edge

I'm trying to turn PFS in Adelaide in the Bardfinder Society of Bardelaide, so far the best we've had was a party that was 50% Bards, but I'm hoping we can get an all-Bard party eventually.

One day my brother, one day...

I haven't got the chance to join them but in our area is a group of four friends who play dwarf gunslingers. They fire and then charge into melee with cutlasses

My brother wanted to set up The Avengers in PFS; he's already got Captain Andoren.

Hulk (strength based alchemist)

Thor: warpriest of himself
Ironman: synthesist was closest (all the power is in the suit) harder to do now. eldritch knight?
Hawkeye: any archer build- is already a fantasy character ported into supers to getting him back is easy.
Captain andoran: Paladin Bard Brawler.
Black widow: social bard or rogue.

I have not done it in PFS, but I have played themed parties both in home-based campaigns as well as organized play (LFR).

They can work great or they can just suck. I think it depends on the system. With Pathfinder/3.5...I think it depends on the class. .

In PF I think bards could work OK, given that they can "jack of all classes" it. We used a pretty successful rogue group in 4E D&D, but I do not think it would work as well in PF.

What about a party of clerics? Or indeed paladins?

Liberty's Edge

If only Inspire Courage stacked with itself, still there are Bard archetypes that replace it with something else.

Scarab Sages 3/5

Our local PFS group has several themed parties.

Pirate crew - Everyone is a member of a pirate crew. Lots of profession (sailor).

Summoning/Companion Party - Everyone is focused on using summoned monsters or animal companions to fight for them. We call it "Flooding the Battlefield"

Deviant party - Ummm well we have a lot of fun Roleplaying this group but ummm..... we can have some rather dark humor. This group doesn't see much play time at conventions.

Ifrits: This is our newest group. Everyone is an Ifrit Gunslinger/Paladin with various builds. We are holy warriors sent to cleanse the world from evil with fire and bullets.

I've ran an all rogue table that was fun. Lots of teamwork and skills.

I've seen an all bard table and an all barbarian table (The Horde which was awesome.)

4/5

Two years ago at Gen Con I GMed a table with three friends who all played Dwarven (brothers?) Sczarni members. They were awesome roleplayers, and it let to the great horse-on-a-stick moment of 2012.

Now that I think of it, they must have been brothers, as they were wearing clan t-shirts that they'd made.

My freinds and I have started a party based around teamwork feats and overlapping party buffs. We're still in the beginiing stages, but it's been fun so far.

This is already, kind of, happening at Gencon. We have a group that consists of Ben "The Rock" Grimm Oread Brawler 5/Living Monolith 2, Spiderman, Iceman, Gambit, Nightcrawler, and The Winter Soldier. Not really avengers, but well you get the idea. We will be playing together in the season 6 opening special.

There's a group locally who have been playing together since 2008. Among their stable of characters are The Flying Falcinis, a family of half-orc acrobats who are a traveling circus in their free time. They are all Sczarni as well. I put them through the First Steps arc. When they saw the street performance in Part 1, Act 5 they decided to put on a show of their own. They are a pretty entertaining group.

Rather quickly in most situations! We have our tactics down and know our summons. It keeps things moving. Summoner App helps a lot as well.

Silver Crusade 3/5

I want to make a group where everyone takes at least one level of Pathfinder Field Agent prestige class. Alas, not likely as most people find the class underwhelming.

Who'd like to join a group where everyone's a tiefling, takes Fiend Sight twice, and we're all oracles with the tongues curse (picking the same language, of course)? Two of us will be Battle oracles, one Life, and one maybe Fire or something.

We will then kill the lights with darkness/deeper darkness and beat the crap out of everything in supernatural darkness where—for the first time in history—it's the player characters who are the only ones who can see.

Who will join me in this crusade of karmic revenge?

Shadow Lodge 4/5 5/5 RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 8

We were talking about doing this with our fetchlings after PaizoCon 2012, but decided against it for all those times we'd play with other people that couldn't see in darkness.

For a home game or AP it would be amazing though.

Grand Lodge 2/5 RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

Well, naturally you just wouldn't play with other people. ;) Or you'd hand them potions of darkvision (remember, lasts 3 hours) and use the non-deeper spell.

We've actually kind of got a party here locally, myself and two others, that do this. We only do this if the others that are with us are consenting. We put level one of Bonekeep to task with our party of four, we lost the non-Tiefling of the group with a really unlucky bull rush by the enemy.

Our EotT group did something like this (Goz masks, etc.) but our judge asked us to stop doing it as it was ruining the game for him... So we really only ran it for the first two...

Grand Lodge 5/5 ****

I GMed two such groups in my past

Black Waters with an all Andoran group. It wasn't planned - but I built it into the scenario that the VC didn't want any non-Andoran (makes a lot of sense if you know the scenario as well as the faction missions)

The second one was a half Tengu group. This was at a time you still needed a boon. Two players got their boon from GenCon and not sure how my son got his. It surely was 50% or more of all Tengus in the UK at the time.
What made it special - the two Tengus were a couple and they had adopted my son. I think I described the random village at the Andoran/Cheliax border with the hook for the adventure to a Tengu colony to give a reason why such a large group of Tengus got selected for that mission.

One I played in was the 'Walter' game. The original Walter was a young fighter played by a player who shared some of the first games with me and was my bag carrier (wizard str 7) until I burned one of his missions with a fireball (and got a bag of holding).
He had inspired Walter 2 - my porter.
Walter 3 - also inspired by the same character was an undead (?)
Did we even have Walter 4 ? Can't remember - but was hilarious when 'Walter' met everyone he had inspired.

Edit: added in the UK - there were many more in the US

Silver Crusade 5/5

Long ago in LG days I played in a group that called ourselves SMURF....
"Swiftly Mounted Undercover Recon Force..." ...A halfling cavalry troop.
Halflings (and a gnome) mounted on Dogs...

I can recall one muster where our Rogue was unable to make it, so we were in the muster area waving our hands in the air, calling for a 6th player... "5 Halflings, APL 4, looking for a Rogue!". Yeah, that got some notice!

Hmmmm.. would rocket raccoon be easier to do as a kitsune or a rat folk gunslinger? Ratfolks closer give the size, kitsune probably closer on the visual...

Drax: invulnerable rager barbarian

Starlord- Human rogue.

Gamora: Dex based elven druid monk (wait what....? See groot)

Groot: plant companion of Gamora

Dark Archive

Me and my friends almost always make themed Parties. Our high level characters are all related in some way to a Cheliax Minor Noble house we made up, we have all Ulfen viking family, a group of ex Lantern-Lodge turned Osirians, an re-skinned Avengers using the ACG playtest material (The Hulk is totally a Abyssal Bloodrager), and we're trying to decide between and Italian Mob Scarzini party and an All Monster party for our next group.

Okay....

I seem to have a theme all by myself just due to GMing

Human Torch: Fire Elementalist Arcanist (started out as a sorcerer/wizard)
Thing: Oread Monk
Invisible Woman: Thassilonion Pride Mage (Illusion Specialist focusing on invis)

That's it though....having trouble coming up with Mr.Fantastic...warped bloodline sorcerer maybe?

I pretty much have the avengers of movie fame sewn up, IMHO:

Cap: Brawler
Thor: Thundercaller bard
Hulk: ragechemist alchemist
black widow: Ninja
Ironman: Alchemist (with the discovery that makes your bombs a line)
Hawkeye: insert favorite archer type here

Nick Fury: Urban Ranger/Master Spy "He's the spy!"

Silver Crusade Venture-Agent, Florida–Altamonte Springs

I looked at white haired witch, it seems doable but need to get the book with it.

@Vrog I'll have to tell a friend about that alchemist discovery because he wants to make an iron man character, but we are doing it in a home game so he can be a golem maker, also so he can make/wear golem armor (ultimate magic not pfs legal hence the home game.)

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

i've been involved with a bunch of theme parties, mostly just for one-shots though...

one really fun one was all 1/2 orcs- 4 ragechemist/wild ragers with amplified rage and one crypt breaker alchemist with a wand of deep slumber.

2/5

We got a Griswolt family of gnomes who are all Taldan nobles over here in the Boston/Salem area. All different levels but we will meet up at 12 and conquer for Taldor and the Griswolt name!

4/5

Our first characters (halflings) were members of the Flying Flutterfoot Family Circus. Since then, we've spawned a number of Flutterfeet in our area, and it's only going to get worse now that the original Flutterfeet characters are retired and running a nomadic Pathfinder Lodge.

We have, quite coincidently, sat down at a table with 4 halflings, 1 gnome, and one very patient human...Another time, 3/4 of the table coincidently worshipped Sarenrae (and none of us were Dervish Dancers...that was so odd!)

I do have a goal of putting together "the Tiger Squad", a group composed of characters who all have a peculiar tiger mask they found on a previous mission.

2/5

I'd like to start up a themed party of Nethys worshippers, including a "Paladin" of Nethys (Hexcrafter/Staff Magus), a Half-Elf Lore-acle (Seeker), an Aasimar Cleric/Envoy of Balance focusing on summons and channeling, and a Wizard (any flavour).

I'll have you know that I have the one true Captain Andoran!

Not necessarily a fact... but I'll stand by it anyways!

His Background: As the fledgling country of Andoran strives to make its place in the history of Golarion, the one thing they find themselves in need of is heroes to look up to for inspiration. With heroes being a rarity, they have come up with a unique idea... they have decided to manufacture them.

Stephan Roghaz is one of the latest to be trained to become a hero of Andoran and a symbol for freedom. Starting out as the simple son of a farmer, Stephan was trained in a remote monastery in a variety of hand-to-hand combat forms. His current mission has sent him to Absalom to learn about other cultures. A chance meeting lead to him being offered a place within the Pathfinder Society, a position that not only allows him to learn more about the Inner Sea region, but an opportunity to gain more diverse skills outside what could be learned in Absalom.

For now, his handlers are content to allow him to stay a member of the Pathfinders while having him fulfill missions that help forward the Andoran cause of freedom. But if his loyalties should ever change...

Our local group has one main themed party and a couple other ones that are being built and/or just kind of happened.

The main themed party is The Illustrious Brotherhood of the Shifting Sands. We are a Qadiran merchant/mercenary family. The idea started after a convention when several of us were sitting in a diner talking about making a group that worked really well together. This turned into a two hour discussion at the diner and an email chain over 100 emails long. We started out with a full party, but soon the family grew so that there is somewhere around 15 members. In my opinion, the best thing about the family is that the members will designate a "face" character. The face is the only one who will speak in anything other than Kellish. The family has grown from a super-optimized team into a fun roleplaying experience and a real bonding experience for a lot of players. That being said, the original group is brutally effective, both in and out of combat. We even made t-shirts!

A themed party that we are putting together is the Barbarian Hair Band. All include more savage/tribal style characters named after hair bands. Mine is the party skald, Axil Steelheart.

Finally, there is one that kind of just fell together thematically, but we have yet to actually play - The Short Wagon Super Stars. All of these characters have intelligence and one other mental attribute as a dump stat. I really want to run them through The Disappeared, The Blakros Matrimony, Fortress of the Nail, or Library of the Lion. It will likely be a train wreck, but it will be hilarious and fun.

Axil and I should totally jam sometime. Around here I started Absolom's greatest adamantium-death-hair-prog metal band. The ladies know us as DYRE WÜLF.

I don't often perform with groups (usually that costs extra), but I might make an exception for one with such a sweet name! Problem is, I really only have two more formal engagements until retiring from the stage Katisha is level 11.1, but give me a call when you get just a little more experience under your belt. (wink)

Katisha has Perform Sing at +34 (more depending on circumstances), as well as Percussion, Dance and Wind....). Current Fame is 55.
Bloomington is only 4 hours away, so I could easily see meeting up an at CON between sometime... And she really doesn't mind "playing down" - though we might have to bill the act as "Kat and the Flesh Puppets"? drop me a PM if you like!
