Give 'em the ol' 1-2...(for Encounter Building)

Advice

Silver Crusade

List your examples of awesome combinations that 2 (or more) NPC's/BBEG's/creatures can throw at a party.

A quick example is using the feat Butterfly Sting to set up a x4 crit for an ally.

I'd like this to be an encounter building thread, so please approach it as such.

Simple tactics first: "Chase the Rabbit" Part 1- One little kobold gets the group's attention, and a chase ensues. (Sense Motive checks here are appropriate).

Part 2- Kobold leads the group into an ambush.

Classic. Good for teaching the group to not react to everything.

Delaying Tactic Bad guys know they can't win a fight, but lure the party into a fight while they steal/kidnap/destroy something important. The whole fight is meant to delay the party while the main bad guys get away with their objective and escape.

Teaches the group not to think every encounter is about killing.

Bees. A favorite of mine. Bees. Druids made of bees, barfing up swarms of bees. The group is swarmed by bees.

Teaches the party to fear bees.

Because:
Bees.

Well, Druifds can't barf bees. But... Witches can: Vomit Swarm!

In my Red Hand of Doom, Koth is normally a 3.5 Bugbear Sorcerer but I rebuilt him as a Bugbear Witch with vomit swarm.
I almost want him to have a pet bee swarm too, but not sure if that'd be too mean.
Took extra trait so he has: Wayang Spell Hunter. Also persistent Spell.
Took it on blindness/deafness so he'll easily blind one of them.
Then the bees attack!

Skirmishers: (Only works until the casters start getting level 3 spells, but even for a couple levels beyond that it can work as a resource drain.)

Total enemies: 8-12ish level 1s, CR5-6 encounter.

Half the group, say 4-6 level 1 stealthy enemies like goblins, kobolds, halflings, or hobgoblins armed with bows attack from stealth at range. Say 80-200' away. Half of those (Group A, 2-3) shoot then re-stealth. The other half (Group B) attacks and re-stealths the next round while group A is moving to Group B's Position.

The other half of the group (Group S, preferably rogues or ninjas) stays stealthed halfway between the party and the initial ambush site. If the party stays together after a couple rounds, all three groups move away in stealth to set up an ambush later (or warn bigger, badder enemies.)

BUT, if the party splits up, Group S pops up out of cover and focuses down the PC stragglers after everyone else has gone by. Then they move back into cover and stealth away, Groups A and B doing the same.

The PCs may never run into Group S, or might not for a few encounters like that. Let them start getting confident or antsy about grabbing those annoying little jerks that keep running away, then make them pay. It's also a good way to explain why your BBEG was prebuffed and not surprised when your PCs bust in on him.

Also, I can't remember the last time something came in and attacked us from the rear a couple rounds after we started a fight in a dungeon. Seriously, do that to your PCs!

You might want to hold off on the Butterfly's Sting + x4 crit weapon until the PCs are high enough to provide for Raise Deads, because someone's gonna die when that combo trips. (But I just got an idea for how the "Army of Desna" should be organized!)
