thinking of playing a dog(race)

Advice

Like the minbari war hounds from dragon age.
For class I'm thinking barbarian.
And doing the vital strike chain of feats.
Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.
This is a player character.

Well, there are really two ways to do this in the core rules, use the Monsters As PCs rules...or play a Synthesist Summoner. In the second case you're more were-dog than dog, but it's the easiest mechanically.

In either case, talk to your GM and see what they'd prefer.

I was thinking more awakened animal.
Still that's something to look at.

That would use the Monsters as PCs rules, as suggested. Though personally, I'd go with a Blink Dog instead. They're already smart, only CR 2, and have some ridiculously awesome spell like abilities and solid stat mods (+2 Str, +4 Dex, +4 Con, +2 Wis). What level are you starting at?

One.
As my game group has only 3 regular players at the moment it would have to serve as the melee member of our group. We have a druid and a sorcerer at the moment.
I agree the blink dog is neat but maybe a wolf of dire wolf would fit the concept better.
Plus tripping on a bite would be good too.

Maybe a pick this one up with leadership at sixth level.

Sadly, an Awakened Wolf is still CR 2 and thus not a 1st level character equivalent (they're CR 1 without being Awakened, and Awakened adds +2 HD along with Int and Cha).

You could indeed probably get one with Leadership, though.

Personally i would like to start a game at 4th to 6th level but I'm not running this one.

*shrug* The only real way to do this at 1st is the Synthesist Summoner route. If that's not your thing, well, I don't think there are a lot of other options.

Maybe the young template then awakened later?

You could just take the riding dog, strip it of it's racial hit dice, and go from there. For stats, just use a floating modifier and buy/roll normally.

You could go Oracle, be whatever race you wanted, and then take the Wolfscarred curse. Say that instead of just having a wolfscarred face, your whole body is cursed to look canine.

Viola, instead of a dog race that you don't need GM approval to acquire. Plus bonus points for being a mauled freak of nature! You could even go Barbarian (Mad Dog) > Oracle (Nature Mystery) > Rage Prophet. If you took the animal companion revelation, you'd have an animal companion equal to your level in addition to rage and all of the fun perks of being a rage prophet.

War hounds tend to be beefy.
They're smart too well for a dog anyway.
They seem to understand human language too.

Fat goblin games put out a humanoid dogs book called Racial Ecologies Canids, and they can function quadrupedally .

Maybe a skinwalker?

They can change shape. Maybe you could talk to your gm about being "mode-locked" by a curse/spell/Deific fiat.
