Summon Monster clarification

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

Hi there,

So the summon monster spell (first loot spell!) says "No other cards or powers may be used on this check"

Can you still use cards like the Wand of Ennervation or Swipe (cast by another player, since you can't do 2 spells on the same check) to reduce the difficulty of the encounter? Is the check the whole combat sequence, or just the rolls? If its the former, then I would think you can't use the wand, but if it's the latter, then I would think you could use the wand.

Thanks!

I would think that if is says on this check, it means any card played in relation to any of the steps of Attempting the Check:

Determine which die you’re using.
Determine the difficulty.
Play cards and use powers that affect the check (optional).
Assemble your dice.
Attempt the roll.
Take damage if you fail a check to defeat a monster.

So that would mean, no to the Wand of Enervation and Swipe, which are each played as part of that sequence. It also means you can't play any card to reduce the damage if you fail the check to defeat the monster.

But you could still play a card like Toxic Cloud, which is played as part of the Encountering a Card sequence, but not as part of Attempting the Check.

Caveat: No idea what Summon Monster says, since I haven't seen the cards yet.

Based on the rulebook, using a Wand of Ennervation is part of the "Determine the Difficulty" step, isn't it?

This is under that step's section in the rulebook:

Spoiler:
Some cards increase or decrease
the difficulty of a check; for example, if a card says that the difficulty is
increased by 2, add 2 to the number on the card you encountered; if it
says that the difficulty is decreased by 2, subtract 2 from the number.

Edit: Although that may only be referencing location/scenario effects and the like.

Actually, now that I'm re-reading the card, I have another clarification request...

"If you fail the check, the monster is undefeated but deals 0 damage."

Is that just supposed to apply to combat damage (or whatever damage it normally deals)? Would it also apply to the acid damage Jordimandus deals, for example (If undefeated, in addition to combat damage, a random character takes 1d4+1 acid damage)?

The confusion there is whether incidental damage like that counts as "dealing damage." I would assume so, and that would be the simplest interpretation, but I might as well ask.

I think the Wand of Enervation is played as part of Determine the Difficulty.

And I'd also say that any damage as a result of the monster being undefeated is damage dealt by the monster. So the only thing I think that wouldn't negate would be yet to be dealt After the Encounter damage.

Correct.

What this is modeling is that you have encountered a monster, and you are summoning another monster to get between it and you. You aren't in this fight—you're standing back and watching. If the summoned monster wins the fight, you reap the benefits, and the summoned monster absorbs whatever bad things would happen before it goes away.
