I've been playing PFS about a year now and the scenarios have been spread out over all the seasons. Now I'm GMing for a bunch of brand new players who started in December. I'm running the Destiny series at a con this weekend and I'd like to give my players a little backstory regarding Torch and his relationship with the Society, but I don't know all those details. I know the Shadow Lodge was bad but then they were good for some reason and torch was the leader and then something happened and the SL is gone and Torch is a bad guy....? Could someone give the spoilers so I can understand and help my newbies understand what's going on? Thanks :)

Grandmaster Torch: this covers the early PFS seasons. Hopefully someone can fill in later blanks, but I figure this is a start.

1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Grandmaster torch started out as an information broker who would sometimes work with the society, or anyone that would trade with him. He had apparently been a pathfinder at one point and been burned on a mission, and resented the 10 for it.
He started an evil(er) schism of the pathfinder society who went about ruining the societies neutralgood name.
In season 3 grandmaster torch rejoined the pathfinders as a sort of "pathfinder union rep" to never leave other pathfinders behind, and NOT to send them on missions without the proper training, equipment, and warning they need. (some venture captains are pretty notorious for leaving out minor details like "there's no oxygen up there" or "hey watch out for that dragon)
At the end of season 4, torch came by the names of some of the deciemverate members, said "Ha! it was all a scam, later suckers" betrayed the party and high tailed it to parts unknown.
Now he's apparently back in the info business. [idle speculation] He's going to try to become the sage of plagues and take his war on the decimeverate to the next level[idle speculation]

Yeah, this was a problem with me as well. It was tough trying to explain why some people weren't very fond of Torch to a table of five people new to PFS at a con ths previous weekend. One thing to keep in mind is to try to clue them in to Torch's story, but be sure not to get bogged down in backstory, don't pull them away too much from the current scenario.

He's a dead man walking... that's all you really need to know about Torch.
Oh yeah..there are a pair of (former) Shadow Lodgers down here that want to 'talk' with him.
Kyrie (mine) wants to intoduce him to a a masterwork adamantine bullet with his name(s) on it. Preferably from some distance and unseen.
Mince Firetooth, a goblin, is going a lot more direct. He wants to eat Torch's face..while the man yet lives.

My very first PFS Scenario was the Many Fortunes of Grandmaster Torch and I loved the character. Some of my favorite fictional characters are schemers, information brokers, and all around scoundrals. So I was pretty happy with getting the opportunity to write a scenario starring none other!

As a GM and player I like Torch. My one lament is that when he left, the Shadow Lodge stopped being a faction. It has a time and a place, and the Pathfinder Society is that time and place.* Hells, Pt II just proves Torch was right.
