the Combat cross?

Advice

I'm looking to build a character that wields a weapon similar to the Combat cross from CASTLEVANIA. Any suggestions on how the weapon would work and what class might be the best to use it with?

Isn't that a giant crucifix that you beat people with?

Pretty much. I mean, you could make it be a 'Heavy Starknife'. Or stat it as a pick.

Grand Lodge

Well, it seems magical in nature.

Throwing/Called Tetsubo seems to fit stat-wise, the best.

It is a giant crucible you beat people with, but it has an extending feature to attack people with

Grand Lodge

Crucible is a bowl.

Crucifix is a cross.

Which are you looking to beat people with?

It's more like a spiked chain with a heavy mace/heavy pick on the end. The weapon can either be used as a mace/pick or can magically extend to a spiked chain. I would think using these weapons would be sufficient.

Has it ever occured to anyone that the Belmont family picked absolutely ridiculous weapons to fight vampires with?

Throw a cross at it!

Whip it! With your leathery leathery whip!

Oh! A chain! That's more effective!

Literally it seems the only ones with their heads straight were Alucard and that one chick that literally had magical lances and swords fly out of her hands.

Grand Lodge

Warpriest with a Whip sounds fun for that.

Actually, the Vampire Killer is a chain whip. Sometimes with an iron ball at the end of it, and if you're really good, flaming.

It may seem ridiculous, but it's served them for centuries. As the old saying goes: "If it's stupid, but it works, it's not stupid."

Which is why by the time magic lance chick comes along the Belmont family has been gone for centuries.

I think Dracula was just screwing with them to be honest.

There are crazier weapon ideas

I see no reason you couldn't make a Meteor Hammer with crucifixes instead of spherical weights.

I'm a big Symphony of the Night fan, and I'm pretty positive Dracula does just screw with them. He's the jolly questionable-when-bored Dad that gets bored and causes chaos among his children and children's friends. It makes perfect sense. Plus they do live for centuries upon centuries... nothing better to do.

Aside from that:

You can really just use the Spiked Chain. It's pretty perfect. It's not the look, but the function that is important here. You can always have a smith alter the head/body/chain as you wish for an extra coin - or just say "hey, it looks like this" for free. I'd try to get the DM to give you a free +1/Holy on it...

Who are also not Belmonts (well, Alucard is in the Lords of Shadow continuity I guess).

The Belmonts survived till modern day in every continuity afaik (and continued to kill Dracula, in fact, iirc got vanquished forever off screen in Aria of Sorrow).

I thought it was guns. ...Lots of guns.

In the original castlevania game, they couldn't base their hero off of the original Van Helsing because in the original book, he was a 50something year old man who happened to have knowledge of the occult and myth/folklore/history. They came up with the Belmont hero as a younger replacement. Also, for the original game, they wanted something different for their hero's weapon other than the classic Holy Sword or Spear. The Axe was going to be used as a sub-weapon, and a Warhammer didn't quite fit, so they went with a Whip. The Whip is most commonly associated with torture/subjugation, so it was nice to see it used as a heroic weapon for good. Also, in the original game, the player could upgrade the Whip to a more powerful Chain Whip and then a Ball and Chain Flail by finding power-ups while exploring the castle. As the series progressed, they went from a leather Whip to a Ball and Chain Flail and then back to a Sword. Some of the games for GBA and DS had the Heroes using various weapons they found in their exploration of the castle. With the advent of Lords of Shadow and it's sequels, they went back to the Chain Flail. In Mirror of Fate for 3DS, you can play as Simon Belmont who starts out with a Leather Whip that is threaded with metal, and eventually upgrades to his father's Chain Flail. The Chain Flail is probably the best approach.

What I've come up with so far is a +1 Mythril Flail that has reach and retracts into the sword-hilt like handle. The handle has a large spike at the bottom in place of a pommel that can be used as a Silver Stake. For added flavor, I have it that the handle can be equipped with special clasps that attach to the hilt that provide extra enchantments and effects such as the Emerald Clasp that causes the metal to count as Cold-Iron for the purposes of overcoming DR, the Diamond Clasp changes the metal to Adamantine, (and the most expensive), the Ruby Clasp adds 1d6 fire damage as the Flaming Enchantment, Sapphire Clasp adds 1d6 cold damage, Amethyst Clasp is 1d6 shock, Peridot is 1d6 acid, Quartz Clasp is Ghost Touch, other gemmed clasps can be made as you see fit. The Holy Enchantment should be added to the weapon itself as soon as possible. In the Undead Hunter's Handbook, they made an undead slayer whip, can't remember the name, that had the stake on the handle.

You could really blow someone away with that weapon.
