[Spoilers] My very unusual fight with Eustoyriax that ended suddenly and not as we expected.

Wrath of the Righteous

Liberty's Edge

The battle my party had with Eustoyriax, the Mythic Shadow Demon guarding the Sword of Valor in the lower levels of Drezen, was quite intense. Not only was the party split up prior to the battle, leaving it to just myself (Cavalier/Ranger who uses firearms), my cohort (melee fighter), and the party cleric (who thankfully knew how to cast Magic Circle vs Evil).

Eustoyriax was assisted in this combat by two other shadow demons who worked in tandum to possess the party. Without going into more details, near the end of the fight we had disposed of two of the demons leaving just a wounded Eustoyriax remaining. He managed to possess my character but before he could do much more than fire off a single bullet at the cleric was subsumed into the Magic Circle and suppressed.

Having reached an impasse, my character decided to make himself a less useful minion and handed his guns over to his cohort and left the Magic Circle, giving the demon a chance to escape and find a more useful servant. Not a moment after I left the circle, Eustoyriax took possession once again and used his Possession Mastery ability in conjunction with his SLA's to TELEPORT AWAY WITH MY CHARACTER to the hell's knows where.

Not only did we not gain our 3rd mythic tier for defeating the challenge, but now the GM is now asking me to roll up a new character as it might be numerous sessions before there will be a chance to recover my original character (his will save against the magic jar requires him to roll a natural 20).

How crazy is that? No idea what to do now, as my character was definitively the party's leader and his cohort has no reason to stick around without him there, short of trying to find him.

Has anyone else had this happen to them? Been possessed by Eustoyriax (or another Shadow Demon) who had the audacity to teleport away with them? I'm just curious if anyone has ever seen this before.

Nope. But as a GM, thanks for the idea. Although I don't know if I'd want to do this to my player(s).

Hahahaha that sounds awesome. Man what a battle. That will be a story for years to come. Smile, enjoy your somewhat humorous death and make a new character. Mythic level play should be deadly, so don't feel too bummed about it.

Scarab Sages

And expect a new mythic enemy later on, as Possession Mastery allows Eustoyriax access to your character's mythic abilities as well.

Very nice.

Liberty's Edge

I'm just glad firearms are sufficiently rare, and I handed mine over to my cohort before the teleportation.

With Greater Teleport, this is not as much of an issue as you'd think.

Hahaha. Wow. Now that's a story.

This happened to a PC in our party, but that was only because the player was retiring her anyway, so...

Liberty's Edge

Update: We tried to continue this campaign, I even built a new character, but the campaign died without my original PCs participation after only two sessions. Shadow demon possession with the ability to irrevocably capture a PC seemed to be the lynchpin in ending the campaign. Maybe we'll get back to Wrath of the Righteous some day, but this time around the AP was a failure.

Small note: At least you ended the campaign while it was still challenging. Everything I've heard suggests Mythic starts breaking down with Tier 3, and the third book on had a constant pattern of underpowering foes.

The Exchange

I thought of that, but he is the guardian of "The Sword of Valor" so I have limited his leaving it's side. This still makes him a tough BBEG. If he gets the wizard, I may wipe out the party.

I'm still giggling. I just got home from our weekly Pathfinder night where we've also been on the Wrath of the Righteous: Sword of Valor campaign. And guess what happened...

Yup! My oh so virtuous lady cleric had her soul "jarred" and is now possessed by Eustoyriax who then proceeded to teleport away... WITH MY CLERIC. I'd been rolling low all night so when this happened I could only laugh.

However, our GM has asked me to prepare myself for next week to roleplay my new evil incarnation. (0_0) I've never RP'd evil before so I'm trying to research "What Would Eustoyriax Do" before then. If you have any suggestions please feel free to share.

I may or may not be getting my cleric back in one piece. But I'm going to find a way to enjoy this turn of events one way or another.

Hmm. It's hard to say, since the villain's motivations may vary from campaign to campaign. I'd contact your GM to see if he has any specific suggestions about Eustoyriax's influence.

However, from a general perspective, remember that shadow demons, aka invidiaks, are the demons of envy. Since they have no physical bodies, they possess others to fevel in the sensations of flesh. So, some possibilities may include:

-hedonistic indulgence; drugs/sex/etc. Within your and the group's comfort zone, of course. :)
-envy picked up from demonic sympathy
-superiority and pride at being able to indulge yourself, unlike the pitiful shadow demons

Additionally, consider how your character's self will change. Does her previous deity or personality influence things? A worshiper of Erastil or Irori will see this differently than a Desnan or even Sarenite.

Will your character still seek redemption from her lapse? If she is redeemed, will she go completely back to normal, or will she retain some newly acquired bad habits? Will she "overcorrect" and become more prudish or violent?

I recommend thinking about all this and discussing your conclusions with your GM before next session. I wish I had something like this in my group - it's an amazing roleplaying opportunity, and you seem pretty into it, which is also good.

Anyway, I hope this was helpful to you. :)
