Don't Need Be No Sissy Bard, Get You Promo Goblin Card!

Friday, July 26, 2013

The release of the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game is just a few weeks off, bringing the Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path to your game table in an entirely new way. Of course you can expect murderous cultists, inbred ogres, armies of giants, slithery seductresses, ancient dungeons, and all the rest of the deadly monsters and evil schemes that make Rise of the Runelords one of the greatest fantasy adventures ever. But I know what you're really waiting for: more goblins... and by extent, more goblin songs.

Yeah, we've got those.

In fact, we've got a whole brand of special promo cards designed to link into the Rise of the Runelords Adventure Path, each one adding a new goblinly piece of equipment, blessing, spell, creature, or half-sane something to your game. Each one also includes a brand-new goblin song that James and I threw together, so you know that what you're getting is 100% legit, goblin-approved noisemaking. Just check out a few of these promo cards and the goblin hits included on each.

We've made a total of 8 promo cards for Rise of the Runelords. The Fire Sneeze card will debut at Gen Con, and will also be available at major PFS events throughout the year. Dance with Squealy Nord will be released in the November 2013 issue of Game Trade magazine. The remaining six will be sent to retailers, one every two months starting in August, matching our bimonthly release schedule for the Base Set and follow-up Adventure Decks. We'll also be inserting them into randomly selected paizo.com orders during the month that they're available at retail.

But if you'd like to make sure you get your hands on all of them, subscribe to the Adventure Card Game! Each subscription shipment will include the cards associated with that month's release, so Fire Sneeze and the August promo card, Poog of Zarongel, will go out with the Base Set next month; the October promo card, Blessing of Zarongel, will go out with The Skinsaw Murders Adventure Deck in October, and so on. So make sure your raspiest singing voice is good and out of tune and get ready to make some noise with the goblins of the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game, marching on your game store this August!

Editor-in-Chief

Note: This blog originally announced the ship date of the Squealy Nord promo card as September. It has been updated with the correct shipping date for the Squealy Nord promo card, which will arrive with the November issue of Game Trade magazine, and will ship to subscribers in December.

Oooh! Shiny!

How many cards in total? Should it be easy to collect a whole set of them?

Same cards at GenCon and in the magazine?

I won't say that there's something you have to do... nor will I say that there isn't anything special you need to do, either...

I will say this, however: You may want to bone up on your rendition of the Goblin Song. With some friends. :)

How can we in Europe get our hands on these promo cards?

Is the text on the Horsechopper correct? I would think the difficulty check would increase if you were NOT proficient with the weapon.

I assumed it was sort of a joke, since if you were proficient with weapons it would make wielding something that was as clunky as a Horsechopper more difficult. Goblin ingenuity!

You are correct, sir!

We'll be updating the blog in a few minutes with some additional information.

Are these the entire set of the promos? Also at gencon will you get individual cards or a whole set.

Thanks so much for looking out for you subscribers, Paizo! I've been a booster of the card game for a while, and was horrified at the thought of missing out on promo cards.

Ok - two comments.

One that makes sense with the Horsechopper and I like it. Humor in games is always great and that makes that weapon pretty flavorful.

And the second item about subscribers getting the promo cards is AWESOME. I was trying to figure out how to get the cards from GenCon since I am not going and Paizo solved my problem.

Thanks!

<3 you for thinking of the subscribers. Great! :)

I live in Australia - how can I get copies of the cards and the main game?..I wanted to playtest but Australians weren't allowed...:(

Shipping is a pain, but the subscription is what you're looking for.

It appears that the best option price wise for international subscribers might be to source the main set locally and then subscribe to the bi monthly expansions (though you'll likely miss the August promo cards).

There was a brief thread about some Australian options here.

Dark Archive

Well, maybe they'll enter the option to start the subscription with the Character Addon Pack. So we international customers could have an August delivery (with the promo cards), but without having to pay these huge shipping costs for the big box.

I must say, this has gotten me even more excited about going to Gencon! I can't wait to pick up these cards, and I LOVE that the Horsechopper is better for non-proficient characters (I'll be giving it to Sajan the first chance I get because HILARIOUS!)

You've given us tons of info on these already, but I just wanted to check one more thing... is the Poog of Zarongel card an Ally or a Character card? If it's a character... I'm going to be so incredibly happy! (I'm expecting him to be an Ally though)

Silver Crusade

I have a couple goblin loving friends who will enjoy this addition to the game! Can't wait to pick it up next month.

I don't really understand the Fire Sneeze card. The rules state that the lines are an "OR" proposition. So, I can either use the card to attack (option 1) or use the card to enhance a weapon attack (option 2) or I can banish the card (option 3). Why would I choose the third option?

Pathfinder Lost Omens, Rulebook Subscriber

Awesome, though it kinda sucks that I'll likely miss out on at least the first two, since I've already pre-ordered the base set through my local retailer. Heck, I'm the one who convinced them to carry the adventure card game.

You can use this to enhance a spell... or if you are not a caster you can use it to enhance a weapon.

After doing either of those things you would normally put the card in the discard pile... but if you do not have the arcane or divine skill you banish rather than discard.

I believe from the demo that the last line is pretty standard for most spells. It is effectively "If you aren't a caster, you don't get this spell" I'm guessing that some arcane only spells talk about the Arcane skill only, and divine only spells talk about the divine skill only

I dont know how many people will be picking up the 'big sets' locally and then subscribing to the expansions. If it's a significant number, I wonder if next year (or whenever another 'base set' is launched?), the promo cards might also be included for retailers who preorder (kind of like the premiums with PF Battles).

Scarab Sages

This is completely boss, and is an excellent way to differentiate the subscription. Promo cards are a great way to make this game slightly collectible without entirely ruining the fun of it as in most collectible card games (where a substantial real-life, real-money investment is more or less required to fully enjoy the game - hence why I have not and never will play those games). The witty ditties make it fun, too.

Each of the 8 promo cards are a different type: there's one each of the 6 types of boon other than loot, and there's a monster and a barrier. Poog is an ally.

All correct, except that you don't use it to *enhance* a spell—it *is* a spell. (Also, you can use it to enhance a weapon even if you're a caster.)

True enough. I think it's a pretty awesome idea, and a novel way to encourage subscriptions. I had been on the fence about ordering through my local store vs getting a subscription, and I think I still am. It'll depend on how much it changes my shipping costs.

I just need to get over my "completionist" mentality and enjoy them for what they are: Fun extra flavoring.

Silver Crusade

Is there a way to begin the Adventure Card subscription with the Player Addon Pack rather than the base set? I'd like to get all the promo cards and I've already preordered the base set locally with birthday gift cards.

Also. OMG I cannot wait for this game! That play through video was epic!

Sorry—the behind-the-scenes complexity of this particular sub is already high, and we're not going to be able to offer subs starting with the Add-On Deck only.

I don't quite understand the Dance with Squealy Nord card. It has an acquire option, what do you do with it if you successfully acquire it? I see what you do with it if you defeat it. Also why such a high combat? I mean holy pig! It's got a higher combat than a black dragon!

Doesn't seem to be a way for me to get the whole set then. =(

Vic, do you mean you can't start the sub today without starting with the base set? Or are you saying that after the base set has been shipped and the first add-on deck is the current element, you still have to start your sub with the base set?

Both, I think. The first two releases are effectively 'tied together' as far as the subscription is concerned.

Well, shoot. That should say Check to Defeat, not Check to Acquire.

The combat value is high because them there greased pigs are hard to hit*. Better to outsmart it.

*In RPG terms, there's no distinction between AC and hit points in this game, so things that would boost DEX *or* CON both translate into increasing the difficulty to defeat.

Ah, thanks, now I understand. You can either outsmart via the smaller check or try and whack it at the higher number. Thanks for the clarification.

Sure but then I miss the first months promo card.

What's the true story here?

Customer service can do a little more than a user can with starting or stopping orders mid month

Will there be anyone distributing promo cards (and/or demoing the game) at the Spiel '13 convention at Essen in October?

I might be able to help you. Send your email address to me at pierce.watters@paizo.com. I will forward it to a distributor who should get in touch with you. A limited number of cards will be in Australia, but I don't know how they will be given out. Anyway, this will give you a chance.

For international customers, who wish to start with the Character Add on Deck:

Because of the way the subscription system works, the option isn't going to come up on the website for starting with the character add on deck. However, when the option for starting with the first Adventure Deck shows up on the subscription page, start with that issue and email customer service and we will be happy to manually add the character add on deck as part of the subscription if you wish. This way you get your 20% discount off the cover price—and the promo cards!

So as an international customer (live in Germany) I can just start the subscription with Character Deck/Adventure Deck 2 and will get all the promos, including the GenCon and GameTrade Magazine ones?

If you say yes, I will subcribe in the same moment :)

Likewise here. We are limited with vendors where I am at in Nevada, but I did check around and also called a friend who has access to a much bigger market in Phoenix and has the same issue.

Dance with Squealy Nord will be released in the September 2013 issue of Game Trade magazine. (from the top of this post)

Is this the reason:

My understanding is that subscription people are going to get all the promo cards. Does that include the one that was suppose to be in the GTM?

Thanks for teasing us, european, that couldn't access thoses shinies because of over-inflated shipping rates and boundaries taxes.
