Another Feral Mutagen question.

Rules Questions

So I am currently playing a tiefling beastmorph vivisectionist alchemist. I took the Maw or Claw alternative racial trait instead of having darkness as a SLA. I am planning on taking feral mutagen when I reach level 2. I currently have 2 claw attacks that deal 1d4 damage each. I was reading the description for feral mutagen and it says "Whenever the alchemist imbibes a mutagen, he gains two claw attacks and a bite attack." So the question is, if I already have 2 claw attacks do I get an additional 2 claw attacks and a bite attack? The claws from feral mutagen deal 1d6 damage each and it would make more sense if I would just up the damage on the claw attacks I already have, but the wording of the question made me wonder if I could get away with more.

Nope. You'd only get the bite.

I'll add that Beastmorph Vivisectionist is already an extremely powerful character. You really don't need to try to pull any RAW/RAI shenanigans.

Well my DM is saying that I take a -2 to my claw attacks as is, so even if I did get a yes on growing 2 extra claws, I don't think it would have gotten past him in the first place.

Why are you taking a -2?

I also question where the -2 comes from

Probably confusing it with TWF.

Yes, dm is making me take a -2 on claw attacks as he is comparing it to TWF. I did explain the fact that these were primary attacks, but I don't think he gets it and I feel like I argue with him too much on these things so I let it slide for the session.

Unless you already had more than 2 arms to begin with (not including Vestigial Arm discovery), you aren't gonna get more than just a Bite attack. (And before you ask, no, you can't use Vestigial Arm discoveries to get more claw attacks.)

I might also add that the Feral Mutagen surpasses the claws you otherwise possess by an extra size worth, so while you can still make claw attacks without it, if you planned on using the Feral Mutagen for every combat, taking the Darkness SLA would've been the smarter choice, especially considering you get a free Darkvision ability via Beastmorph archetype.

Flavorwise though, the Feral Mutagen already does what you're looking for, so it's still in line with your original expectations.

I don't always have an hour between combat sessions to make other mutagens so the claws are nice, especially if I invest in Weapon focus: Claws or Amulet of Mighty fist.

Liberty's Edge

Note: You do get to replace your standard claws with the Mutagen claws (which do 1d6 instead of 1d4), you just don't get more than two claw attacks.
