Boarding pike, enlarge person, reach.

Rules Questions

I'm playing in a skulls & shackles campaign and got a boarding pike. I can extend the reach of the boarding pike to have '20 reach (can only attack at '20, not closer).

But how does that ability function if I'm Large, or Huge etc.?

*note, I do know how the standard reach works, only wondering about that special ability.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Well, the standard method is that you can't attack at your natural reach and you double your natural reach to determine what you can attack. With the Whip, you triple your natural reach and omit the "exclude minimum reach" step. To illustrate:

With a normal reach weapon:
Medium: [-5-][-10-]
Large: [-5----10-][-15---20-]
Huge: [-5----10----15-][-20---25---30-]

With a whip:
Medium: [-5----10----15-]
Large: [-5----10----15---20---25---30]
Huge: [-5----10----15---20---25---30---35---40---45-]

So, for a boarding pike, it has a reach of 4x your natural reach and excludes 3x your natural reach.

With Boarding Pike:
Medium: [-5----10----15-][-20-]
Large: [-5----10----15---20---25---30-][-35---40-]
Huge: [-5----10----15---20---25---30---35---40---45-][-50---55---60-]

Silver Crusade

I'm not sure why you both think you can extend the reach of the Boarding Pike to 20'. It's a normal reach weapon.

If there is some special rule, somewhere, about double-length boarding pikes, then Kazaan's numbers would be correct.

Yeah not seeing this special extending ability.

I think one you can get in that first chapter of Serpent's Skull is magical and has an "extension" feature.

Grand Lodge

It's the Boarding Pike of Repelling.

Interestingly, it is PFS legal as far as I know.

My Sea Singer Bard acquired this weapon by taking it in a disarm, and then the next round 5 foot stepped back, and attacked, rolling a natural 20 and confirming the critical to lethally impale the former owner. He used the Pike for the rest of the adventure.

PS Kazaan is right.

It says it gives you 20 foot reach, and cannot be used up to 15 feet while like this so, yes enlarging should work as normal, there are no exceptions noted.

I would assume it would give you 40 foot reach, and also allow you to attack at 35 feet. Your deadzone would be double the original deadzone, 30 feet instead of 15.

Edit: Already answered by Kazaan, I agree with his logic.

Thanks all.
