summoner - crafting?

Rules Questions

A question of whether or not it is possible for summoners to craft anything purposeful.

A member of our party wants his summoner to learn wondrous item crafting feat. He got the idea from gianttip which suggests this a possible and great idea for the party. Normally I would agree for a caster to select this feat, but as I look few/none of the spells qualify for crafting wondrous items - or atleast the ones he wants to make.

Can anyone clarify if a crafting summoner is plausible/worthwhile and if so a path for this build?

Thanks

Sczarni

If you can't cast the spells required, you can always UMD a scroll, or just add +5 to the DC to craft the item, as per the crafting rules (or even get someone else to cast the spell for you).

did not know about the UMD for scrolls or +5 - but I admit to not reading into the crafting too much x) Thanks

If he have caster level 3 he can take it.

Also the 10th level Aspect ability can massively crank the summoner's UMD at the cost of 1 pt of of the eidolon's evolution pool

Aspect:

Aspect (Su): At 10th level, a summoner can divert up to 2 points from his eidolon's evolution pool to add evolutions to himself. He cannot select any evolution that the eidolon could not possess, and he must be able to meet the requirements as well. He cannot select the ability increase evolution through this ability. Any points spent in this way are taken from the eidolon's evolution pool (reducing the total number available to the eidolon). The summoner can change the evolutions he receives from these points any time he can change the eidolon's evolutions.

Skilled:

Skilled (Ex): An eidolon becomes especially adept at a specific skill, gaining a +8 racial bonus on that skill. This evolution can be selected more than once. Its effects do not stack. Each time an eidolon selects this evolution, it applies to a different skill.

My Jade Regent character is a summoner with crafting feats (wondrous item, arms&armor, and Rod) and I've never stopped having fun with it.

Craft Wondrous Items can be a nice feat for any caster. I'd watch out if the Summoner is taking the feat at the behest of another PC though. Even if you don't use the +25% WBL suggestion from Ultimate Campaign you might find that the Summoner barely has enough downtime in a typical campaign to craft stuff for the Summoner and eidolon, much less for allied PCs. This becomes even more true at higher levels as magic item prices soar.

@MC Templar - The Skilled evolution is another reason besides low cost Haste and lots of Lesser Evolution Surges why I think Craft Wands is great for a Summoner. The Evolved Familiar feat can help lower Charisma familiars get in on the wand jockey action too.

While Devillkiller is correct in saying typical downtime will be restrictive, there are rules to allow for magic item crafting while on adventure. Check out page 549, Players Guide starting on the left column where the sentence starts with "The creator also needs a fairly quiet, comfortable...". This will allow a enchanter to continue making items as long as the gold holds out. As always, check with your DM to verify he(she) would allow this option.
