Silent image. Minor image if you want to add sound of coin thrown inside. Permanent image if you don't want to stand nearby and concentrate on it.
From what I remember from the many Illusion topics that have been had none of those can do what he wants because they are all Figments and thus cannot make something appear to be something else.

You are getting bad advice in this thread. Silent Image cannot create the illusion of absence. Figments in general cannot.
What you need to create the illusion of a pit is a glamer, such as Hallucinatory Terrain or Mirage Arcane. Alternately, research a low-level glamer called Illusory Pit.
Some folks argue that a figment can create flat images of 3D scenes that would appear to observers to be pits or distant towns or whatever. I’d rule that kind of fine-tuned perspective isn’t possible with figments, since the rules specify “Those who perceive the figment perceive the same thing, not their own slightly different versions of the figment. It is not a personalized mental impression. Figments cannot make something seem to be something else.” Illusion spells are quite powerful and flexible; this limit seems reasonable.
