Dark Souls 2

Video Games

Who else is really excited about this? I played the first one till my eyes bled and its just under a month till release day for the second here in the states.

I am so prepared to die.

I wanted to finish my NG+ game of Dark Souls before this came out, but the four kings had other plans. Plans that involved killing me over and over again.

But yeah, super excited!

What system and level range?

I have an Int-based caster that eats the Four kings for breakfast, and I've helped many a fellow gamer get past them in NG+. Praise the Sun!

Hey Sebastrd, sorry about that, just saw this. I'm on 360 at SL 125ish. Just started playing part 2 though.

Anyone else playing yet? Opinions?

I'm on 36, as well, and my mage is lvl 125. Let me know if you ever decide to go back.

I'll probably wait for a while on DS2 due to playing other games at the moment. If I'm lucky, the price will have dropped by the time I'm ready, too.

Cool, thanks! I've realized that NG+ is sort of a different ball game after Ornstein and Smough. At least the bosses are anyway.

I've gotten maybe 9-10 hours in so far. I'm enjoying it, though being a tank has gotten a bit tougher since shields don't block 100% physical damage anymore. And you've really got to dedicate a lot of levels to attunement and/or intelligence/faith if you want to cast even one spell. All in all, I am liking it though.

I'm tanking too. I decided to pretty much ignore casting altogether. We'll see how much I regret that in the future.

Have you been dealing well with the changes to the controls? The new method of sliding down ladders got me killed pretty early on. I loathe the new jump mechanic. I've probably died five or six times already because of it.

Sovereign Court

Is it worth buying? I'm getting it for PC when it comes out.

I certainly think so. I've been having a ton of fun with it.

Did you play the first one or Demons souls? To me, it feels like a cross between those two.

Sovereign Court

Played Dark Souls 1. Aside from absolutely nonsensical narration, the game was fun. Except when you accidentally run into something that curbstomps you in a second. That wasn't.

I actually thought the narrative in Dark Souls 1 was innovative and interesting. The game gave you very little in the way of direct information, instead opting for obscure hints, ambiguous descriptions, and a scenery with a lot of personality. I thought it really worked well with the fatalistic tone of the world, and it helped create a sense of wonder that I found very compelling.

As for DS 2, just got it a couple of days ago; having a blast so far with my knight.

Fired it up last night and ran through Things Betwixt and a little into the first town.

First death was a head chomp from the first cyclops.

Graphics.....are not as good as DS1

Dunno about the hit to health with each death. Since respawns/shops are limited this means people can get ground down too far to recover.

Shadow Lodge

Apparently it bottoms out at 50% of your health...and each time you use an effigy to reclaim your humanity, it's supposed to reset the bar to 100%. So I don't think that you can completely ruin your game simply by dying too much.

And outside the Cathedral of Blue in Heide's Tower of Flame you'll find a ring of binding that reduces how much health you lose on hollowing, topping it off at 75%. I don't find it to be too much of a hardship personally, especially since the game (at least at the beginning) hands you a lot of effigies if you do some exploring.

I'm new to the series. Any thoughts on how to make a fighter/sorcerer type?

Looking at the starting classes, I would try starting with the swordsman since he/she has the least ground to cover enhancing attunement and intelligence to at least 10 each. The warrior is more durable and the sorcerer starts with soul arrow, but it will take a greater investment to get them to the point where they can double dip. The merchant that sells sorceries requires at least 8 intelligence to even speak to, so that may be a first priority before getting an attunement slot.

As far as spells and weapons, it may be good to focus on quick dexterity weapons that can get a lot of hits in quickly and enhance them with a magic weapon spell. You probably won't be wearing very heavy armor, but as long as you get used to dodging and attacking from a distance where possible you should be fine.

Thanks! I started with a bandit, thinking they would be the kind of place to start since I hadn't played before. Then I noticed the intelligence of 1….

I'll give your suggestion a try!

Shadow Lodge

Try not to get frustrated with your extremely frequent deaths.

I picked up Dark Souls and Demon's Souls a couple of months ago. I haven't been able to play them as much as I want, but I know I have a LONG way to go before I can even claim competence.

There's no hand-holding, and very very little in the way of explaination of..
well....anything.

I check the wiki because I don't mind spoilers and noticed that there are two rings you can get by doing two utterly insane things.

Spoiler:
One is gained for NEVER DYING! The other is gained for NEVER USING A BONFIRE!

Too much pain for me.

Shadow Lodge

I doubt anyone ever gets those rings legitimately.

Don't you HAVE to use bonfires to save?

No. Bonfires are for transport/healing/item shuffling. The game uses an autosave system. Every so often, there is a little flame symbol in the corner of the screen(at least in DS1) that means the game autosaves.

Shadow Lodge

One thing I hate is the fact that the game tells you to quit via the menu. Never remember this.

I think I lost out on a special fight. Castle of Fallen Giants and I went up some roots to an upper pthway(has the exploding wall that is a shortcut to the bonfire) Climbed a ladder and a giant bird dropped off a creature. Flipped off due to panic and ran around a bit but got killed. So whatever that fight was didn't trigger again.

Oh, don't worry. You'll meet him again. It is possible to kill him there, but you haven't missed out.

How does one leave a message on the ground? No Orange Soapstones.

I have no clue from playing how you level up. What the heck do you collect for "EP" is it the meter on the bottom right that goes to zero every time you die? I'm utterly confused.

To level up, you collect souls. These are your XP and currency. They are absorbed automatically every time you kill a monster. To spend the the souls and level up, you will have to talk to the lady standing near the bonfire in the town Majula. I think her name is the emerald herald.. something like that..

Oh, the number on the bottom right is the number of souls you have. If you die, you drop those souls wherever you were killed. To get them back, you have to make it back to that spot and find your blood stain.

Thanks Jam!! I really appreciate it!

Hey no prob! Glad I could reciprocate some of the help that I received when I was new to the series.

What genre of game is it? RPG? MMO?

The Exchange

RPG with an online component, (you can leave limited messeges for other players, be summoned, invade or be invaded.).

As for running the Swordsman that was a cruel thing to do to a starting souls player that low health is a real pain, though it will teach you the games defensive tactics quite fast as you learn them or you die. (I started as swordman myself for exactly that reason low health forces solid play as even a single slip will kill you.)

Also, if you die before you can reclaim the souls you lost LAST time you died, they are gone forever.

Shadow Lodge

It has definate RPG elements, but I tend to think of it more as an action game. In combat, your stats and gear are definitely not as important as skill/strategy.

Lack of manual for basic gameplay is annoying for newcomers to the series.

Finished off Last Giant. Anyone know how to get to the bottom floor if possible where the fires are? I saw a treasure down there.

Went to Flame Tower, the mace is a very good weapon to use against the guards there.

Hi Ornstein. *dies*

Found sorcerer much more difficult to play in Dark Souls 2, as there's no reliable trainer nearby at the start. You gotta push all the way into No Man's Warf to find someone that can teach you some decent sorceries... which of course means lots of dying.

Oh, and knights can't cast miracles from the start. That's different for sure; made my knight expecting to pick up a chime and get to work, but turns out you start off with a pretty low Faith score.

Several ways to get in there, silvercat ring from shalquoir and jumping down in the right place with low burden, fall control sorcery, or theres a key later in the game which unlocks a door in.

To get a feel, I went back to the bandit I started with. I'm feeling a bit more confident. Managed to level a couple of times. I think I'll try to push my faith up a bit and get some miracles.

Or I'll start over with a warrior and try to raise my stats enough for sorcery.

Having trouble with Not-Ornstein and went into No-Man's Wharf. Got to the sorcery guy at the end and went to bed fore finding out that I missed a pull chain for the boat(gnash teeth)

Wish titanite shards at least were more plentiful since it really puts a crimp on experimenting with armor/weapons.

I've been playing a Swordsman/Sorceror dual wielding Warp Sword and Scimitar or Heide's spear and shield and having a lot of fun. It took me awhile to realize you need 1 and 1/2 stat requirement to properly enter the dual wield stance and so I did that wrong for quite a bit.

Everyone should bump their stats up until they can use a shortbow or tote a crossbow around, it is very good for plinking monsters and softening them up. Be aware that unlike DS1, AI is more aggressive and mobs will move together.

More stuff done. Got to Harvest Valley and finally got more titanite to upgrade my armor. Might have a go again at Lost Sinner.

Harvest Valley spoiler

Wee:
Go to Huntsman's Copse by finishing off the dragonrider at Flame Tower and talking to merchant on the floor above until she says she will move, then go back to Majula and find her next to the object near the door where you head into Heide. Ask for her to activate the machine and there you go. Work your way through until you fight the skeleton lords and then head into Harvest valley

The Rotten down. I must say that The Gutter/Black Gulch didn't impress me like Valley/Blighttown did in the previous games. I never go the feeling that these were places where everything got tossed into and melted down into poison.

Bloody spitting statues...
