I really wanted this to be good. Unfortunately, the pilot is as bad as the worst The Clone Wars episodes (yes, those with the Character-That-Shall-Not-Be-Named), with a disjointed narrative and flat, uninteresting, annoying characters.

Character design is also dodgy: the bruiser looks like an overgrown, purple monkey and the (supposed) Mandalorian wears so little armor she could do away with the rest, as well.

Wow. I thought it was a great star wars story.
Yeah it was predictable in places, and the art coulda been better, but the story was very much a star wars story.

Is it available for non-cable subscribers to stream anywhere yet? All the channel specific stuff on Roku seems to demand a paid cable subscription. I cut cable TV for a reason (mainly too much money for too little to watch).

The story was a little rushed... ok a LOT rushed. It was also pretty predictable. BUT I still loved it. Totally want to see more.

I got the pilot on DVD for 12 bucks at Wal-Mart.

Two good pilots. If the expanded universe shows up (and if your edict 4 includes that blue guy with the red eyes then it certainly has) then we also know that Antilles fellow was pretty good. It doesn't invalidate the point mind you, but don't discount the anti-redshirt of Wedge.

You don't even need the EU to understand the awesomeness that is Wedge Antilles.

Wedge is one of the only X-wing pilots to survive a trench run on the original Death Star, miss, come back for more dogfighting and interdiction against TIE fighters, and then pull out of the fight and get home. (Luke tells Wedge to bug out because Wedge "can't do any more back there" with his fighter all beat up.)

Wedge is the first Rebel pilot to bring down and score a kill against an AT-AT.

Wedge leads the charge into the second Death Star, both dogfighting and trailblazing through the corridors of that station ahead of the Millenium Falcon. He knocks out the power regulator while the Falcon gets the main reactor core, and survives that attack as well.

Luke may be "the best bush pilot in the outer rim territories," but a lot of that is because of The Force. Wedge is raw, natural talent. Best pilot in the galaxy, hands down.

PILOTS FOR LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He is the only pilot to have kill markers for both death stars on his fighter.

I still love my Y-Wing and B-Wing though..I love bombers.

And, according to the comic series, Wedge is actually force insensitive. When everyone else is getting nightmares from being in the general vicinity of an old Sith Temple, Wedge didn't feel a thing.

Depending on who you talk to, that may be a force power in and of itself.

Flawed, but looks like it will improve later.

Also, second episode will have the droids we're looking for.

Sovereign Court

Oh god why? WHY?

Starting off, it is effing terrible. The character design and art is just horrible, the story is badly clichéd and predictable (not good clichéd like ANH, just bad), the bad guys are even more comically inept than ever, the 'quirky bunch of allies' are so bland and cookie cutter I can't believe it, and whatisface the main character makes me want to bludgeon him to death. The teen prodigy smartass is so overused and so badly handled here I want to puke.

I suppose it's not impossible that the show will get better but this is even worse than the introduction of Padawan Mosquitobumps in TCW because there isn't even a little excitement to distract you from the stupid. I guess it could be worse but right now the only thing I can come up with is introducing Jar-jar as a cast member.

But texture work bothers me. It's decidedly bad in some parts.

So was Gargoyles. Your statement is neither a reason nor an excuse.

Exactly. Being for children is no excuse for bad writing. It's possibly an excuse for bad animation and design (I certainly didn't notice much difference between good and bad animation when I was younger).

The Wookies looked as bad as the stormtroopers aim.

I might give it a few more episodes, but with the disgusting abundance of good stuff to watch on tv & Netflix I might let this ship sail away.

Well.

I'll be enjoying it...

I liked it. I think it shows promise. It's not quite there yet...but shows...promise. I'll watch it.

It is aimed at a younger audience than Clone Wars was at the end. But remember Clone Wars started very kiddy too. Rebels has that 'family' dynamic. Daddy Kanan, Mommy Hera, the adopted kids Ezra and Sabine, Dad's war buddy Zeb, and the family droid.

As for the art... yes there are a few weak spots, but I am certainly willing to overlook them.

Let them get their feet and then lets see what they do with the show, I will be watching.

I really really like hera.

I find pilots are not often very representative of their series. Usually when I really like a pilot, the series end-up disappointing me. When I thought the pilot was only OK, I often end-up liking the series. Sometimes it has less to do with the episode itself, but in the order or ways that things are introduced for the first time.

That was the case with Firefly. The Train Job was a good episode but a poor pilot IMO. The pilot for The Clone Wars was rather blah IIRC, and the series really picked-up by season two for me.

I don't know how it was for this one, but pilots are often manipulated by three or four different parties. "gotta have humour" "gotta have action" "gotta introduce the characters, but do it quickly". The pilot was also previewed by a test auditory, from which they got feedback and will adjust subsequent episodes (but we still got to see the same pilot)

That was the cover and back description of a book; it was meant to attract our attention but you can't judge its content solely on it.

'The Train Job' wasn't Firefly's pilot. It's the second episode. I agree that it would be a bad pilot. The real, feature length pilot is called 'Serenity' (like the movie) and sets up the characters nicely.

The problem with Rebels is that the second episode was as bad as the first one.

Watch more serenity, then. Me, I'm sticking with this series.

My point exactly; the actual pilot, serenity was aired after The Train Job which effectively acted as the "revised" pilot. Something about the network people thinking serenity was too slow paced or something, and so The Train Job was commissioned instead.

That's too bad. I haven't seen the second so I can't make an opinion.

The episodes of Firefly were played out of order by Fox. Whedon moved Buffy off Fox (which was moving it around to support other shows) and bad things happened to Firefly. A lot of people suspected malicious intent. Myself, I don't ascribe malicious intent to what can be more simply explained by stupidity. But that's just me...

I really enjoyed the second episode, it's a heady mix of Firefly and a fun Star Wars tabletop campaign. I'm more than willing to give this show a chance and really don't mind that it skews younger than Clone Wars because shows like these mature with their audience.

Entertaining show 4 stars out of 5.

The Exchange

Just saw the pilot episode. Interesting. A bit 'aladin the street rat hooks up with obviously doomed rebels' vibe. I think it would be better from the empire point of view.

Show has vanished from its 4:30 Saturday afternoon slot. Found this pilot episode on Friday 4:30-5:30 pm.

Grand Lodge

I am enjoying it and my kid loved it.

I didn't care for the third episode- far too feel good kiddy for me. And this is me talking. Hopefully fourth will be better.

Not getting a firefly vibe from this at all.

Pilot episode repeated followed up by ep.2 where the rebels encounter two droids while lifting a shipment of illegal disruptors. So ambassador organa is not only investigating activities in the empire he is gathering intelligence on any 'rebels' we assume might be useful later.

Ep 2 repeated this week followed by ep. 3. Jedi have run in with inquisitor.

Ezra gets a lightsabre/blaster ripping off ulysees31 animated ip

COOL!

Clone Wars got DARKER at the end.

It was pretty harsh during season 1. I'm pointing to two episodes in particular CLOAK OF DARKNESS (Episode 9) and LAIR OF GREVIOUS (Episode 10)?

COD was the one where Assaj Ventress is sent to either rescue or assassinate Nute Gunray (we're not sure which until near the end). There's a pretty violent on screen death at the end of that episode that kinda knocked me back a bit while watching it with my then 6-7 year old son.

Or the following episode where Kit Fisto and his Padawan take on Gen Grevious in his lair? Which again results in another on screen death that's pretty brutal (for an American produced kids show).

I think the show was already dark in the first season. But compared to later seasons (Including the fate of a certain group of clone troopers... *sniff* Fives *sniff*) I could see how it might look like it was sunshine and butterflies.

Clone Wars was so good. I haven't had a chance to catch any of Rebels yet, but I heard it's been renewed for a 2nd season, so that's encouraging!

So was Justice League (Everything after A Finer World) & Justice League Unlimited (The ENTIRE season long CADMUS arc).

So was Batman Beyond (Out of the Past) and Young Justice (ALL OF SEASON 2)

Even original Teen Titans Animated series had some pretty DARK episodes (.vs Trigon, Robin vs. Slade).

Just because it's for kids doesn't mean that it has to be weak sauce story and theme wise.

I've been enjoying Rebels so far. I think it will find its footing much quicker than the Clone Wars show did.

I would however point out that all of those shows made marked improvements in their second seasons. Hell, by the end of their first, as Rebels has.

Oh thats right...waxer and rex were clones. :)

Scarab Sages

I never got into Clone Wars. I couldn't take Anakin seriously as a good guy after the prequel movies. I don't know if Clone Wars really followed his descent toward the Dark Side, but if it had looked like it was going to explore that, I might have been more interested.

I find Rebels a bit more approachable as a viewer, because it isn't using familiar characters. I get to meet them on their own ground without any baggage from the movies. I wish the main protagonist didn't have to be a kid, but it's Disney, so I realize that's their focus audience.

I think the main thing I could wish more of from it is aliens that are, well, alien. It's animated, so they're not tied to fitting humans into prosthetics or doing motion capture. They can make the aliens look any way they want (within the limits of the source material, of course). I'd like to see fewer human-like faces in the core characters. I wish they hadn't chosen to have a Mandalorian and a Twilek in the crew. So far they haven't done a lot to develop those two characters as personalities, either, so they're kind of uninteresting. Hopefully they'll get episodes where they can shine at some point.

You must have missed the girls night out ep.

Loved it.

Also, I am an unrepentant Hera fan.
