When exactly do "At the start of your turn" powers occur?

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

The previous version of the rulebook stated that "advancing the blessings deck" happened before your turn:

Quote:
Advance the Blessings deck: Before your turn, flip the top card from the blessings deck faceup onto the top of the blessings discard pile.

This suggested that effects that happen "at the start of your turn", such as Lem's power to exchange one card in his hand with one card in his discard pile, should happen immediately after the "advance the blessings deck" step.

The updated rulebook now excludes the statement about this step happening before your turn:

Quote:
Advance the Blessings deck: Flip the top card from the blessings deck faceup onto the top of the blessings discard pile. You never acquire this card, though some cards may refer to it during your turn. If you have to remove one or more cards from the blessings deck for any reason and there are not enough cards to do so, the players lose the scenario

This suggests this step is actually part of your turn now, which makes more intuitive sense to me. But does this now mean that "start of your turn" powers like Lem's actually take place before you advance the blessings deck? The updated rulebook specifically says when "end of turn" effects occur, but as far as I can tell, says nothing about "start of turn" effects.

They happen after you flip the blessings deck and before you do anything else that isn't a "start of your turn" thing.

I would agree, they are applied immediately after you flip the card from the blessing deck.

Take your turn by going through the following steps in order.

The sequence describes the order of your turn. And the start of your turn implies the moment your turn starts. You turn still doesn't start until you flip the card. If anything the old version implied that flipping the blessing card wasn't a part of your turn because you were instructed to do that "before your turn", which is probably part of the reason it was changed.

If it had been "Before your turn" then I'd say you should do it before you flip the blessing. But since it says "start of your turn" you flip the blessing first.

That's been my understanding so far, but the updated rulebook seems to suggest otherwise. Or at least, it's not explicit about it.

I don't see any suggestion otherwise, but I agree they weren't as explicit about it as they were with "end of turn" actions.

Previously, "end of your turn" effects happened at the literal end of your turn, in the step called "End Your Turn" in the turn sequence. That was changed so that "end of your turn" effects now happen in the "Reset Your Hand" step (which was the right move, in my opinion).

There's no step explicitly called "Start Your Turn" and it's never spelled out where "start of your turn" effects actually happen, so by default, wouldn't you assume that they take place at the literal start of your turn, i.e. before you doing any of the steps?

The old rulebook explicitly said you advance the blessings deck before your turn (even though it was still a step in the turn sequence). That was the only reason under the previous rules why you applied "start of your turn" effects after advancing the blessings deck.

If the intention is for "start of your turn" effects to continue to happen after you advance the blessings deck, it needs to be spelled out more clearly in the new rulebook update, in my opinion.

Just hold on a bit, guys. We'll discuss this internally on Monday.

Thanks, Mike!

There were four places in the rulebook that told you that Advancing the Blessings Deck was part of your turn, and one place that told you it happened before your turn. We removed the contradiction.

I can see how your understanding of "start of turn" effects may have relied on that contradiction, but that's not something we want, so we do need to be more specific on that point.

I think the better solution is this:

Advance the Blessings Deck: At the start of your turn, first flip the top card from the blessings deck faceup onto the top of the blessings discard pile. Then apply any other effects that happen at the start of your turn.

Sounds good, Vic. Thanks for your response and for looking into this.

Clarification please?

If a Scenario adds Banes to the Blessings deck, and I turn one over, do other start of turn abilities trigger before I encounter that card? Or, do I pause the ‘start of turn’ and encounter that card, resuming start of turn triggers (wounded for example) after the encounter?

If that Bane's encounter/effect was "Start of Turn", you would still be able to pick the SoT order of effects, so potentially you could still resolve it first.

However, I would guess any Hourglass Bane-play would be worded like "When you discard this bane from the Hourglass..." - so the cause-effect places it very definitely in the "Advance the Hour" phase of the turn and before Start of Turn effects.

It's part of the "advance the hour" step.
So before the "start of turn step".
IMHO.

So any power happening "Start of your turn" (whether it's a character power, location power, scenario power, card that can be played at start of turn...) would happen/can only be played after you fully resolve the encounter.

Note that it means for example that cards that were displayed in a previous turn for an effect until the start of your turn (e. g. Divine Favor) will affect your encounter with the "Hour" bane.

IMHO.
