Shield + Animated + Called?

Liberty's Edge

Can a shield be enchanted with a magic enchantment like the Called enchantment? Specifically, I'm wanting to combine Animated + Called.

Yes but...

It's a little wacky, but it can be done. I'm on my phone right now so I can't give you the exact reference by the CRB says that you can "enchant a shield as a weapon."

To add any enchantment to a shield or weapon you have to give it at least a +1 enhancement bonus first. So at a minimum you'd need to make it a +1 animated shield (9000 gp+) shield and then give it a weapon property of +1 called (8000 gp+). Since you're doing weapon enhancement you'd need to use the weapon masterwork cost of 300 gp.

So 17,300 (plus the cost of the shield) for a +1 animated, called shield.

Just out of curiosity, what are you hoping to accomplish with this? An animated shield cannot attack and it's a free action to grab it when the 4 rounds is up.

Liberty's Edge

It's so that my 2h paladin can get more AC from a shield. Figured I could get 2 of them once I run out of ways to boost my AC.

Shield bonusses don't stack. So 2 shields woyld be a waste.

He wants two because animate only works for 4 rounds then has a 4 round cooldown.

He wants to animate for 4 rounds, then when the shield falls to the ground call the other shield to animate for 4 rounds while the first recharges. Repeat ad infinium.

Sovereign Court

This can be done for a lot less money, if you are willing a spend a feat. A quickdraw shield with the Quick Draw feat takes a free action to ready and stow. So you can stow the shield at the beginning of your turn, make your full attack with two hands, then ready it at the end of your turn for your opponent's turns.

It can only be a light shield, but you can spend some of the money you saved by increasing the enhancement bonus.

Grand Lodge

A Shield is a weapon.

It can be enchanted, just like any other weapon, with weapon enchantments.

Ranax - why? What is the benefit of that? You're still holding a shield all the time then?

Not holding, but you are getting the defensive benefit of having a shield equipped. Here's a round-by-round:

Spoiler:

1) Move action to animate shield A. Standard to attack.
2) Full attack (shield A animated)
3) Full attack (shield A animated)
4) Full attack (shield A animated)
5) Shield A ends animation, falls to ground. Swift action "call" shield B into your hand. Move action animate shield B. Standard to attack.
6) Full attack (shield B animated)
7) Full attack (shield B animated)
8) Full attack (shield B animated)
9) Shield B ends animation, falls to ground. Shield A animation cooldown has ended. Swift action "call" shield A into your hand. Move action animate Shield A. Standard to attack.
10) continue from 2).

It's pretty expensive for what you get from it. Very few toe-to-toe fights where full attacks are being taken are going to last that many rounds. Especially at the levels where you can afford to have two animated shields.

This does work but is severely limited unless you are using a one-handed weapon with two hands. If you are using a two-handed weapon, you no longer threaten with it while your shield is out. Paladins have a very limited number of feats as well.
