The Skinsaw Murders: Rumors in Magnimar

Rise of the Runelords

3 people marked this as a favorite.

My PCs are nearing the end of book 2 and I had them encounter the following rumors/overhead conversations on the street:

"I saw the Scarecrow. I swear to Abadar. He was stalking down Starsilver Lane last night, larger than life, his eyes burning like a forge and the bloody heads of his victims hanging dripping from his hand."

"You been hitting the flayleaf again?"
---------------
"Hmph. I heard no one's found a body from the Star Murders this morning. I wonder if they took the night off."
---------------
"I heard somebody offloaded a ship in the dark of night over in Underbridge."

"Pshaw, someones always doing that down there."
---------------
"You sure you want to risk going to Sandpoint? I hear they're having all kinds of trouble with goblins and ghouls and demons these days. You really think these 'Heroes' of theirs can keep all of that under control?"
---------------
"Morty One-Finger says he saw a giant snake climbing into the top of the Shadow Clock."

"They should call him Morty One-Eye with the way he's always 'seeing' things."
----------------
"I heard the Night Scales are gearing up for a war against The Gallowed. They think the Sczarni are getting too big for their britches."
----------------
"Did you hear about Aldern Foxglove? Some adventurers calling themselves 'The Heroes of Sandpoint' broke into his manor and murdered him. How people like the Lord-Mayor can let lunatics like that run loose is appalling."
----------------
"My cousin just back from Turtleback Ferry. He said the gambling barge caught fire and sunk, killing everyone aboard."

"What was a po-dunk town like that doing with a gambling barge anyway?"

"Beats me. Some noblewoman was running the place. Course she's dead now, so you can't really ask her why."
----------------
"I heard one of those sink holes opened up again and those spider-things came out and nabbed some poor washerwoman."

"Cailean's cloudy cup! Isn't that the third one this month? The Lord-Mayor needs to do something, or soon we'll all be washing our own small clothes."
----------------
"Finally a sunny day. I know its nearly winter and all, but the rains have been really heavy lately."
----------------
"I heard Foxglove killed his wife and then turned into a ravenous beast. Some adventurers out of Sandpoint had to take him down."
----------------
"I know I was drinking and all, but I swear to Cailean, her face just sort of bubbled and swelled, like something underneath was trying to get out. I just ran like hell."
----------------
"Lots of ogre sightings out by Fort Rannick. More so than usual, anyways. Hopefully the Black Arrows can put them back in their place."
----------------
"How much longer do you think Ironbriar can fail to solve the Star Murders before the Lord-Mayor or Council takes action and puts someone competent in charge?"

"The good Justice is doing his best. No one has even come forward to say they witnessed one of the murders."

"Still, it's been months and people are still dying. At some point you have to say enough is enough."
-----------------
"Graham said he saw a demon perched on top of The Shadow Clock."

"How would Graham even know what a demon looks like? Last month he saw a firepelt and thought it was a displacer beast."
-----------------
"I hear Lady Renova found herself a new toy."

"What's the running bet on how long this one lasts before Lord Renova finds out and takes him on a 'hunting trip'?"
-----------------
"I heard the Scarnettis are behind the Star Murders. They're hiring the Sczarni to bump off their rivals."
-----------------
"They say ol' Murdermaw sunk another ship out in the gulf. We'll hear the call for hunters again any day now."
-----------------

They're now worried they're going to have to fight a Marilith. :)

Anyone else have any good rumors/stories their party encountered?

(BTW, the spider-things is a reference to a random encounter the PCs had while patrolling Magnimar at night in the vague hopes of catching the murderers in the act. One of the random encounters in the Magnimar book is an "An earthquake opens up a cavern, releasing 1d6 shriezyxes", which is a bizarrely specific occurrence for a random encounter chart. It didn't help that once they dispatched the beasts and summoned the Watch, I unconsciously made the guard rather nonchalant about it, complaining about having to fetch a wheelbarrow. This prompted my players to wonder how often this sort of thing happens in Magnimar and proceed to crack jokes about it.)

I LOVE these. I will definitely be using them.

"I swear to Abadar." Wow!
