New player with alot of questions. PLEASE HELP !

Rules Questions and Gameplay Discussion

Hi I'm a new player that's about to start hosting a weekly game with some friends who are also new to this game.I could REALLY use some clarification on some rules of the game, I currently have the beginners box and I purchased the character add-on pack .I'm having a hard time understanding some of the details in the rule book.

Questions:

1)When its your turn and you advance the blessings deck

A)Can you attempt to acquire the blessing ?

B)Does it take your turn ?
( as in , if I attempt to acquire the blessing can I still "explore" the location ?)

2)On a Bane card, whether it be a monster or henchman, if the card has a "check to acquire/Defeat" and a power at the bottom, do you perform the check AND do what the power section says or just perform the check UNLESS the check section says none ? EX.the Enchanter card from the beginner deck.(sorry if that was confusing, cuz im pretty sure i confused myself lol)

3)When attempting to defeat a bane card, anyone in the same location c an attempt the check right ? so does everyone that attempts the check and fails, take the damage or just the player that turned the card over ?

4)Does a combat check mean you can use any "offensive" ability or spell to affect a check to defeat ?

5)What do you do when a bane card has a check that none of the current players has as a stat die high enough ? EX. the Satyr card requires a DEX or Acrobatics check of 9 to defeat but my char only has a d6 die and no cards to affect this roll or any other player at the time ?

This is all i can think of for now. I really appreciate your help. Thank you in advance.

1 a. No, you can never acquire the blessings, this is a timer. Some cards you play may reference these though.
b. Impossible

2.you cannot acquire banes. You may be thinking about allies. Check the cards again. Banes are defeated though combat and checks.

3. No. Only the person who encounters the card can complete or fail it. Other players can play cards to help them with the checks but not roll. Some weapons have secondary effects that can also help other players, the cards will tell you exactly what is capable, blessings can be used on other players from different locations, all cards need to be played before the first roll of the check happens.

4. No. Combat means str or mêlée unless you have a weapon or spell that changes the check to ranged or arcane or divine.

5. Fail the roll

3 part 2 some banes have 2 or more checks to defeat, one of the rolls can be rolled by another player so long as one of them is rolled by the player who encountered it.

I am a learning player too. The FAQ has been very helpful

Welcome to the game!

Q1) A) Advancing the blessings deck is mostly for keeping track of how much time you have left to complete the scenario. You cannot attempt to aquire this blessing. In some situations you can reference the top card of the blessings dicard pile. For example, one of the powers when you pay a Blessing of the Gods from your hand is to mimic the top card of the blessings discard pile.

B) You are not exploring the blessings deck, it is simply the first thing you do on your turn.

2) When you encounter a card you have the option to try and aquire the card if it is a boon, or if the card is a bane you must attempt to defeat the card. Powers on banes should always be read first because they often affect your check. The Enchanteress card you mentioned makes you take damage both before and after your 'check to defeat'. If you fail the check you have to take combat damage as well. (I don't have the card in front of me but I think that is how it works). Basically the powers on banes have to be accounted for during some point of your encounter with that monster.

4) A combat check is always a Strength od Melee check by default. Many 'offensive' cards will read "for you combat check..." these cards may be played to change the combat check into another type of check designated on the card. (i.e. Dexterity, Arcane, Divine, etc...)

Thanks guys that really helped me out! Now i wont look like a complete idiot when we play our first game.

I just thought of a question ! At what point in your turn can you attempt to recharge a card ?

If you are using a power listed on a card and it tells you to recharge the card, you do that immediately.

Some cards have a recharge box separate from their powers. Spells most commonly have this box. Once the effect of the card's power is no longer running, you may attempt to recharge that card. This means only cards that are played for their power may be recharged. Cards discarded or banished as the result of another card may not be recharged.

So when playing a spell to affect a check you may not attempt to recharge that spell until the check you're affecting, with that spell, is completed.

TYVM !

First, welcome to the game. Here are the things you need to do before running your first game.

1)Download the updated Rulebook. It's the first link on the Messageboard page above all the things you can buy.

2)Read the rulebook three times. Then read the FAQ (just worry about the Base/Character Add-On and Burnt Offerings sections) that is linked below the new rulebook.

3)Play a game by yourself with any number of characters (It's full co-op so you can run multiple characters yourself) while consulting said rulebook.

4)Go on YouTube and watch Ricky Royal's and the 2nd and 3rd GreyElephant play-throughs noting in the comments anything they misplayed though they are few.

5)Re-read both the rulebook and the FAQ.

6)Try and sneak in another solo play.

Congrats, you should be ready to wow your friends.

FWIW, I'd suggest this for any board game, but this one needs it badly.
