Seoni and explosive runes

For some reason this one always throws me. If seoni try's a check do defeat of explosive runes it say use intelligence arcane but her arcane skill is in charisma. Would she roll her intelligence die or arcane charisma die +2?


She uses whatever die goes with her arcane check, which in that case is charisma. So her charisma die + 2.


When there are multiple types of check listed you just pick one of them, then read the card as if the others were not there.

If it said it was a Charisma/Melee check would you have the same problem?

I don't think that Kalvit is correct here. Explosive Runes requires an Intelligence:Arcane check to defeat. Seoni does not HAVE Intelligence:Arcane, so she must use 1d4.

Her Arcane power comes from force of personality and will. She does not have the formal training required to decipher and avoid the trap of Explosive Runes.

Note also that it is very difficult for her to obtain new spells, since most of them also require Intelligence:Arcane.


No, the mistake here is you can't think of those skills as linked. They are linked that way for Ezren because it lists them that way on his character sheet but overall arcane and intelligence are not linked in any way. If you choose "Arcane" as a roll then you look at your skills for Arcane and roll whatever is appropriate. For Ezren that's intelligence, for Seoni that is Charisma. For someone who does not have Arcane it is a flat 1d4 that is not tied to ANY other skill.

The other thing to realize is that even though the options on the acquire/defeat check might list: intelligence/arcane, those are once again just separate options of things you can roll, it sounds like you may be reading too much into it if you believe that you have to have intelligence AND arcane together to be able to make that roll.

Basically you should mentally be putting an OR between all of those options. You pick whichever you are choosing to roll against and assemble the appropriate dice. That is all. Just because it said intelligence as another option to roll does not somehow tie those two skills together, it's just giving you two different options.


Yeah it takes a while to adjust to, but strength and intelligence are just a skill.

Arcane and melee are just skills. It lists arcane and intelligence so that spellcasters can use arcane and have a better roll of D12 +2. Meanwhile, Kyra can use her intelligence and roll a D6.

The only you make an unskilled roll would be if it calls for diplomacy or stealth and they aren't listed on your card at all.


Sorry, @Zandari... that's completely wrong! @brainwave is correct - try re-reading the rules about checks and cast any RPG pre-conceptions out the window ;-)


Just make sure you succeed at the strength/dexterity/disable check to unlock and open the window first. Otherwise it will be broken.


Yeah see I kinda knew all this and it does help to mentally place an or between the options but it makes me think when something like this comes up and wanted to ask again to make sure were all on the same page. Thanks to all that responded.
I've failed the first scenario of the 3rd AP 4 times now cant seem to get Mammy. That first encounter as undefeated is diabolical. Those jerks at Lone Shark!! ;)


The key to Mammy is to avoid her until you can strategical place yourself for the encounter. She is guarenteed to escape the first time so don't giver her many options.
