Being the data nerd that I am, I wanted to see the state of the messageboards throughout this last year and compare it to previous years. So I crunched some numbers regarding threads over 200 posts:

Year Count Avg Days Avg Post/Day
2008 2 363.0 0.9
2009 4 363.3 2.6
2010 5 281.0 3.9
2011 15 126.5 12.6
2012 29 142.4 16.6
2013 42 52.3 34.1

so what's this show? There's been a rapid growth rate in large threads since "the early days." The "Average Days" a megathread is active is shrinking, which correlates with the average posts per day in these types of threads.

What's all this mean? Not much really. One could posit that activity overall on the messageboards is up, but proving that would require analyizing the number of posts for every thread on these boards, and then also looking at individual posters vs. number of posts to really know if activity is up or if it's only a certain number highly active users. Speaking of which, there are 97 of these threads, and 9 people have started more than one of them:

Author Mega-Threads Started
Michael Brock 6
Joshua J. Frost 5
Jiggy 3
Arnim Thayer 3
Rogue Eidolon 2
RainyDayNinja 2
Patrick Harris @ MU 2
Painlord 2
Howie23 2
Dysfunction 2
Drogon 2
Benn Roe 2

Not surprisingly Mike and Josh have the lion's share here as their FAQ and Blog Posts account for a significant number of megathreads.

Here's the full list of 200+ post megathreads in their entirity. Statistically significant? Not really, but I found them interesting and I hope you do too. I got a big chuckle out of the number of "PFS is too hard/easy" type of threads.

Kyle... You have WAY too much time on your hands! Go write another scenario! ;P

Grand Lodge RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

Another interesting data point might be who has the most posts in each of those threads.

Also, looks like John Compton needs to get on the ball to get past Joshua Frost! ;)

Oh, I'd wondered what controversial and thought-provoking threads I'd started, but then I saw they were both comments on a blog post. That makes more sense.

Aw, that's just inviting a bravado-laden comeback that I can't necessarily defend.

*ahem*

"I don't start megathreads; I finish them."

I would say "I lock them," but thankfully I don't have that power or responsibility.

Neat data, Kyle.

Interesting. I've actually got 3, if you count the one under my account name (rather than current primary alias). Neat. Thanks, Kyle.

I'm not surprised. That guy is always stirring up trouble...

Interesting data though. Thanks for crunching numbers.

The wealth one I started is actually the longest. I'm not surprised!

In my defense, I *could* have more threads over 200 if more people cared about uninteresting crap that no one cared about.

Liberty's Edge 5/5 Venture-Lieutenant, Alaska—Anchorage aka Dragnmoon

Is there a reason you only stuck to the General Discussion Forums?

Edit: is it really fair not to count Chris's famous pig incident? ;)

Silver Crusade

*thought one of his threads made it pas the 200 mark and then realized it was stopped at 175...*
shakes fist at sky!!!
neat project Kyle :)

Venture-Captain, Germany–Hannover aka Hayato Ken

Not sure if counting the Paizo Blog threads says something there.
That´s more like who does the first comment, but not like who really starts a thread, isn´t it?

From a statistical point of view i would then count the blog entries as threads started by who made the blog entry.

Like with this thread, Galnörag made the first comment, but Mike would have started the thread.

Very interesting thing though Kyle Baird!
Posts per user would be another super interesting thing.
Some surely like the competition who has the most posts, but it would also show how strong the participation really is.
