That's great! I hadn't heard that she won after all; I know it was close. Of course, I only voted for her because her opponent was endorsed by the Cascade Bicycle Club, which is reason enough for me to vote against anyone given the way the bicycle community is degrading our city.

Also, article claims Snarf's employees were reinstated with back pay.
EDIT: "Reinstated" appears to be a bit of an overstatement but, nonetheless,

Hmmm, well, I guess I'll just stick with this thread:

Lord Snow |
I'm wondering how Snow would respond to an employer who fired someone because they were circumcised.
Just noticed this, and of course my reaction is late, but...
Now me, I think there is a serious distinction between circumcision and serious piercing. I do think circumcision is a barbaric act and honestly don't see the point, BUT: it's not a public thing, and you should not expect it to have the same repercussions.
When somebody chooses to pierce himself, it's on him to realize some people will find his new appearance disturbing or unpleasant. Expecting such an obvious modification of your appearance into something so unusual and visible to have no repercussions whatsoever is unrealistic.
Now, in the case of circumcision, usually you don't even get to chose, it's on your parents. Other than that, it's in the most private area of your body. You should not expect it to have repercussions.
So you are comparing a non visible modification that most people don't have control of, to a very visible modification that not only can you chose if you want to do or not, but also that you can simply REMOVE for work (in the case of piercing, obviously, not tattoos, though even them you can usually cover). The two are, IMO, incomparable.
NOW. Having said all those things... if the employer has for some reason a serious problem with circumcision... then, yeah, they get to not hire circumcised people, or fire people they find out are circumcised. An employer has rights, too, and feeling comfortable in your place of business is a legitimate one. Of course as I said before this right stops when it comes to questions of race or gender, but if it's just a specific issue with some esoteric thing, then there's no legal problem.

Unless all of the employees got tatted and pierced after being employed there, then I doubt that is the cause for the closing and layoffs.
And for those of you coming to Paizoncon this year, you may get a glimpse at the future with a $15 minimum wage. The city of Seatac where it is being held just had a $15 minimum wage passed. I'm not sure when it goes into effect or if the legal challenges to it have all been dismissed yet, but it is just a matter of time. In this year's election, both of the Seattle mayoral candidates were tripping over each other to declare who was more in favor of a $15+ minimum wage. Thankfully the one with some demonstrated competence won, so it may be a real possibility.
I, for one, would be glad to vacation in a place that has what should be the national minimum, if not $45.
It's like some of you don't know any history.

I prefer to not buy my food from some slacker with his face covered in shrapnel....it's their choice to get tats and piercings and it's my choice to go somewhere else
If they are at their place of work serving you food, how are they a slacker?
They are providing you a service. Slacking is not working.

Not only that, but I find the idea that European companies don't want to deal with American unions kinda weird. I doubt European companies want to deal with European unions, either, but they've got this whole century-old socialist movement thing which didn't really give them much choice.
Also, Citizen Yojimbo, who the hell are you? It seems like you pop up every seven-to-eight months, call me a dirty commie and disappear again. Not that I mind, mind you....

Well... I assumed you were into that. :)
Otherwise, I mostly lurk. I like reading the off topic threads, but avoid joining the arguments because they are too frustrating.
I had to post about that article you linked, though. It made me so made I wanted to grab someone and shake them. If I interpreted it correctly, the employer was willing to work with the union, but wasn't forcing it, while outside politicians were the ones causing problems. ARgh!!!!!!

London tube stoppages show workers can win
If you didn't know workers can win, you've clearly never met a French farmer. :)
Not to mention that French labour laws make it almost impossible to fire an employee (which, of course, has the consequence that companies are extremely vary of whom they hire. Which leads to a host of different issues.)
