*stab* Better?

Would 3rd person be more okay if the character actually referred to himself in the 3rd person in conversation?

I've never made a "gag character" but one thing I've been wanting to try is making a Hexcrafter/Staff Magus with Prehensile Hair (mustache and eyebrows) who refers to himself only as The Great Mambini.

Shadow Lodge

I've played a character who did similarly - a Killoren Archivist who referred to herself as "This One" and only used third-person pronouns when referring to herself. Played it perfectly straight, not as a joke or gag character.

I think being a thespian is just as bad as being a munchkin.
I've never actually encountered a thespian in real play. Most of my play is local, so that may be why. I imagine thespians are more a problem in non face-to-face mediums where players are more willing to RP.

And I never met a munchkin. Met some players really good at optimizing, including most of our current group, but noone that would actually bring a uber character to actual play.

I did meet this one guy who, knowing the campaing was about starting a rebellion on Cheliax, brings a variant LN paladin who is completely against stuff like rebellions and was some type of drow with horn that made him look like a tiefling and had this background about being a price from another dimension searching for a way to go home. Eventually left the group when he realized we weren't changing the story to be about his character and we wouldn't allow him to hog the spotlight all the time.

The only thing I COULD see being an issue with both of these approaches is I know people are genereally annoyed IRL by people who refer to themselves in the third person, so it could just be being annoying in character as opposed to OOC, and maybe that's better? But maybe it's worse?

the roleplaying in a tabletop game is less like acting and more like collaborative storytelling with dice and rules thrown in. some people, will indeed go hardcore thespian, some will go hardcore munchkin, some will use first person, some third

I approve this message.

IMHO some people suffer the misapprehension that Pnp RPGing is just like acting or that GMing is just like writing a story / novel, and expect everyone else to share these assumptions. To the detriment of those who know better ;) ;) ;)

EDIT: or that in-character speech always has to be over-the-top THIS IS WHAT MY CHARACTER IS LIKE GUYS GET IT??? instead of just casual speech. Present company excluded.

Here here! everyone needs to find a group that has the same balance between munchkinry(sp?), and thespianship as they do. Otherwise, someone will be feeling left out. and who wants that?

Personally I've rarely come across much First person in any PbP I've played in. Additionally, I have a hard time playing with a First Person perspective in the group when everybody else is using Third Person persepective.

In PbP I use Third Person as it feels like everyone, including the GM is co-narrating the story, and I dislike First Person in fiction. Works well for autobiographies obviously, which is weird, because if you think about it First Person fiction is a kind of autobiography. Still I know what I like, and it ain't First Person...

In face to face RPGs, my experience has been that it seems to be more of a mix of preferences, but more commonly First Person, including me. ;)
