#5-08 The Confirmation [SPOILER]

Grand Lodge 3/5

Hello everyone,

I've got a question for you. In this scenario, if the PCs choose to fight the minotaur before exploring the caves, do I have to use the stat block given on page 21 (with the broken battleaxe) ? If not, does it mean that the minotaur has a greataxe ? or perhaps an unbroken battleaxe ?

Thanks in advance.

If the PCs choose to fight the minotaur outside the caves, then use the stats out of the Bestiary for a regular minotaur as called out on pg 10 of the scenario. The axe is not yet broken, as it has not been shattered by the halfling's spell as of yet.

In regards to greataxe vs. battle axe, that's a good question. By RAW, the minotaur should have a greataxe if faced originally before going into the caves and a broken battle ax if faced after.

Thanks for the answer.

It's a bit weird. How does the minotaur lose its greataxe and get a battleaxe while running after Janira ? And why is it broken ? Indeed, Janira doesn't know the spell Shatter and she gives away her Scroll of Shatter to the PCs.

Logically, the only difference between the minotaur before and after should be its hit points. What do you think ?

Thanks

EDIT : Sorry, I made a mistake. Janira keeps her Scroll of Shatter.

One reason for the minotaur keeping the greataxe in that early encounter is just a matter of descriptive ambiguity purposefully included; I believe the axe is described as "tremendous" or some other adjective that means "big." A Large battleaxe is big, as is a Large greataxe. If the PCs elect to face the full challenge early on, they can enjoy the full challenge.

Also look at the encounter when they finally face him:
His inventory lists a broken great axe, so we can assume this was what the Shatter hit. Since the minotaur should be able to catch up with her easily (although she does not seem to be as slow as other halflings, the big cow is in bette rshape) and did not for at least an hour if not more, it's safe to assume that she pulled every trick in her book to slow him down. This might be the reason for his battle axe to be broken, too - maybe she used Grease on it and it hit a rock, or maybe he slipped and the axe hit something really hard. Or maybe it's just in really, really bad shape.

Or this is an error and he is supposed to be wielding a broken greataxe instead, but the battleaxe's stats are closer to what was intende. Hm...

Dude... you're gonna hurt yourself thinking that hard.

Just assume that the combat line in the statblock is correct... and that the gear is correct, too (after all, broken great-axe or battleax, both are large sized, and broken, so no PC will be using them). In any case, it is "always available", so not needed on the chronicle.

Don't sweat the minutia! Roll with it!

The only thing that confuses is me is whether or not the wand of shield of faith should be replacing the cloak of resistance on the chronicle if they give it to the gillman. I know Kyle said "yes", but I don't believe I've seen an answer from John on this one.

Thanks!

Look in the other confirmation thread.

I am going to flag them to request that they be merged.

I recommend printing out small stat blocks for everything in Janira's backpack and handing them out in a pile when they pick through the backpack.

My group quickly sorted through the all the slips of paper and handed them out to those who would benefit from them. And as the game went on the players frequently used the consumables as they had the reminders sitting right in front of them with all the reference info to know how to use them.

It was one of the most effective player use of PFS consumables I'd seen in a while.

This sounds like a good idea. I often see players struggle with the sheer length of stuff she's got in her backpack.

I finally got to witness a party play hard-mode (attack the minotaur at the entrance).

Level 2 barbarian went down to a 60 damage crit from an attack of opportunity. But in the end Janira's glitter dust blinded it and they took it down.

Good news is the barbarian player came back next week and a few players that were wondering if this was a 'care-bear' campaign are no longer flirting with death as aggressively.

Sometimes it just takes one death to get a lot of people to pay attention and take things seriously. It's healthy!

(This is why I also go after animal companions - it's all the benefits of the threat of death, but significantly cheaper to deal with!)

I was running a scenario that had a particularly ruthless tactic (if the enemy beats your CMD, you die) and was really excited that there was an animal companion in the group so that the party could witness the tactic before it was turned on them. Aaaand the ranger said "I'm not sending my cat to melee that! It will get torn to pieces! It is staying here in the back with me."...

If it's the one I'm thinking of, it takes three rounds: Grapple, pin, Coup de Grace. Lots of time for a bit of help: a grease spell, a liberating command, a bardic performance - even 4 players using the aid another action to pry you out.

My wife and I went in with characters specifically to do that. A witch and me on an order of the paw halfling cavalier (the witch was optimized to her job, the cavalier as optimized as it could be within the bounds of "have to be" an order of the paw so that I could justify attacking the minotaur in RP-terms). The stupid thing made 3 saves vs the witch and that pretty much shut down our attempt.
